Individual World Poetry Slam Title Won by Buddy Wakefield! |
It was a love fest! Dozens of poets came from all over the continent to compete for three nights for the title of Individual World Poetry Slam Champion but only one could end up holding the title. The first ever iWPS champ is Buddy Wakefield from Seattle, WA.
It was a gutsy performance with poems on difficult social and personal issues and in the end, it was a clear, but very narrow victory for Wakefield. So he took the trophy, the check for $1200 and a place in PSI history with him back to the Pacific Northwest.
Two poets tied for second place: Celena Glenn of New York and Ed Mabrey of Columbus, OH. Fourth place went to Rachel McKibbens of Orange, CA.
Look for this event to grow in size and stature as time goes on, but there will never, ever be another FIRST Individual World Poetry Slam Champ. Congratulations Buddy Wakefield! |

Individual World Poetry Slam! |
PSI is putting on the first-ever Individual World Poetry Slam!
Our flagship event, the National Poetry Slam, annually pits teams of poets from all over the world against one another and has been doing so for almost two decades. Now, the largest spoken word event in the world gets competition from the people who created the Slam poetry movement: the Individual World Poetry Slam. 60 poets from all over the world will come to Greenville, South Carolina February 4-7, 2004 to step into the spotlight as individual competitors representing cities from well...all over the world.
With the inclusion of a flex-timed format AND a no-repeat rule for the duration of the event to further challenge their abilities, this event will crown some poet in a way that no other official Slam competition has done before it.
Deadline for competitor registration is January 1!
2004 iWPS = Greenville, South Carolina 2005 iWPS = Worcestor, Massachusetts
