Steve MarshAt age 56, Steve Marsh is not the oldest performance poet in the world, but he has been involved with the art form for a good long time. With over twenty years of experience in the high school classroom and over fourteen years of active participation in the Poetry Slam movement, he brings a rich history and a wealth of experience to stages across Michigan and North America. His poetry is a broad mixture of the serious and the silly with subject matter ranging from the changing roles for men in our culture to politics, to modern science's impact on our physical and spiritual lives, to a long series of "channeled" haiku from the dogs in his life.

Taylor Mali
Taylor MaliTaylor Mali is arguably the most successful poetry slam strategist of all time, having lead six of his seven national teams to the finals stage and winning the championship itself a record four times before anyone had even tied him at three. But Taylor Mali is arguably a lot of things. Since putting his teaching career on hold, he has appeared on the first two seasons of HBO's Def Poetry Jam and won the jury prize for best one-man show at the U. S. Comedy Arts Festival. He lives and performs in New York City.

Doug Shields
Doug ShieldsFor five years I wandered around Houston complaining that the city had no poetry slam.  One day my mother replied, "Well, why don't you start one?"  No, I replied.  Not me -- someone else should do it.  Someone else.  Anyone else. 

In 2000 I met a naked man named Dave Roy.  Dave gave me a sweaty hug and told me that he wanted poetry in his venue.  "C'mon, Doug.  Start a slam here.  We're ripe for it."  He coaxed me with another sticky hug.  The Houston Southmore Poetry Slam was born.

In 2002 I moved home to the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas.  I then helped to rekindle the ancient slam scene in Fayetteville.

Scott Woods
Scott WoodsThe author of over ten volumes of poetry and prose (Poetic Predator, Can You Hear Me Now? and Inside most recently), Scott Woods has performed in a number of venues and with an assortment of accompaniments. He is the founder of the poetry performance group The Black Air Poets, which released their first CD, Touch, in 2001. He has published articles, short stories and other prose work in a variety of publications in print and multi-media platforms. His work has been used in creative writing and literature classes at numerous high schools and colleges. He is currently a member of the Executive Council of Poetry Slam Inc., which oversees the annual National Poetry Slam, and MCs a weekly open mic series in Columbus, Ohio.
