IWPS 2006 Final Night show

This story will be updated live during the course of the night. This is like the IM version of being at the finals of the Individual World Poetry Slam. A large and enthusiastic audience is waiting to meet our community in Spirit Square sponsored by the Blumenthal Group.

The first exciting news is that, for the first time in Poetry Slam history, a PSI event will be hosted by an all-female crew!

MC Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz, flew in secretly today from New York to take charge of this historic (or should we say "herstoric"?) event.

Bout Managers Kimberly Simms and Dawn Saylor(Stage Manager duty also by Kimberly Simms), represented the South and the North of the US as well as points east and west.

Timekeepers/scorekeepers Adriana Ramirez and Inkera rounded out the crew. This is the official record for trivia questions in the future.

First Poet, Defending World Champion, Buddy Wakefield, stepped on stage at 8:00 PM exactly with references to convenience stores and truck stops and a shout out to CR Avery in "The Information Man." Terry Creech, presented his poem, a tribute to NASCAR, here in the future home of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and he also sent out some heartfelt thanks to sponsors and volunteers. He made a special acknowledgement to KIMBERLY SIMMS and INKERA.

Michael Guinn was the calibration poet by virtue of having finished 13th in the event. He delivered a moving poem called "Bastard" and received a 26.6 to set the bar pretty high.In fact, one judge awarded a coveted 10 on this poem. Can't get any better than that!

Mike McGee drew first and trotted out a favorite to those who have heard it before and a new favorite to those who have not. "Puddin'" received 28.5.

Andrea Gibson from Denver, was second up and got a 29.1 with her poem called "Dive."

Q went third and delivered a piece called "My South" that contained a list of home cookin' that had this writer thinking about ducking out for soul food. 27.1

Rachel McKibbens talked about her mother in a non-traditional mother/daughter relationship. "Weather's Here. Wish You Were Beautiful." She was rewarded with a 28.0

Stephanie Williams went off mic and spoke with heart directly to the audience. The judges gave a 28.2 to "Dyed Roots."

Jared Paul was sixth. He got a 28.6 for his work called "ABCs for Roger."

Basik Knowledge sang and Dr. Seuss rhymed his way to a 27.5 with "

Krissi Reeves of Austin told us about her family and a little city in Texas. "Waxahachie" The judges responded with 28.1

Versiz delivered a loud and strong poem about right and truth and how poets are the vessel for both. With "Process" he got 29.5

Joaquin spoke quietly and then strongly to those in Africa in his poem "Elephant" for 28.9

Da Minista sometimes whispered his way to a 29.3 from judges on his effort called "Crushed Cans."

Sonya Renee earned the top score of the first round when "Connections" earnerd 29.7

During the break between the rounds Cristin made a shout out to all 8 foreign poets in this competition.Moving on to the second round in this order:

Sonya Renee "What We Deserve"29.3 Maybe that's not quite as much as she deserves. We'll know in a few minutes.

Da Minista scored 29.6 with his claim that he likes women. Is that news? But the audience liked it.

Versiz "Are You Serious?" It's a good question. The answer is 29.5 But is he serious enough?

Joaquin answered Versiz' loudness with his quiet poem "Poem for Jon" 29.7 Apparently the strategy worked.

Jared Paul brought it politically. No surprise there but the audience gave him a 30 and that might have been a surprise to some.

Andrea Gibson with a poem that claims, If you support the troops, bring them home. Again, a perfect score! 30

Mike McGee mailed himself a love letter and it contained enought to get into the final round with a 29.9

So the final round will contain the following poets in the following order:

Scores were not announced in the venue until after all four poets had performed. SO I will announce the scores here and somehow try to duplicate that "suspense."

Jared Paul did a heartfelt poem for his mother "Archepeligo 766-9319" that ends in her phone number. No score total...

Andrea Gibson, after a generous thanks to Charlotte, offered a moving piece called Say Yes.". 9.8 9.8 9.8 9.6 10 You do the math.
