Annual Slammasters Meeting in Austin in 2005
Since the beginning of the National Poetry Slam, the annual SlamMasters' meeting has been held in Chicago, the birthplace of poetry slam. And even though most Slammers love coming back to their roots, there has always been a sense that it was always more difficult for Slammasters from certain parts of the country or the world to get to the Spring meeting than it was for those in the Midwest.
So, a year ago, the SlamMasters passed a plan to move the annual Spring meeting around the country to the host city of the following year's NPS. That puts us in Austin for NPS 2006 and Spring SlamMasters' Meeting 2005.
Here is how Austin SlamMaster, Mike Henry put it on the Slammasters' Forum:
SlammasterGÇÖs Weekend
April 8 GÇô 10, 2005
Austin, Texas
For the first time in Slam History, our annual SlammastersGÇÖ weekend will be held outside of sweet home Chicago. As hosts for NPS 2006, weGÇÖre excited to bring yGÇÖall (thatGÇÖs Texan for GÇ£you peopleGÇ¥) to our fair city and give you a taste of what weGÇÖre planning. We hope you like warm weather, beer, and food cooked on a grill.
In addition to the usual meetings on Saturday and Sunday, weGÇÖll be planning nighttime events for Friday and Saturday night and the first annual GÇ£A-Town ClassicGÇ¥ (borrowing from Krystal AsheGÇÖs Chi-Town Classic) on Thursday the 7th with cash prizes. WeGÇÖre also planning on offering facilities for a couple of workshops / panel discussions. LODGING:
We suggest the following hotels, which will be close to the meeting site and the nighttime venues. They are also surrounded by great coffee, food, and bars.
The Austin Motel
512-441-1157
1220 S. Congress
www.austinmotel.com
This is the super funky, extremely unique motel that was HQ for NPS 1998 back in the day. Check out their website for extremely affordable rates, and browse through the pages which show each individual room so you can pick which mural / theme youGÇÖd like!
Hotel San Jose
800-574-8897
1365 S. Congress
www.sanjosehotel.com
Right across the parking lot from The Austin Motel, youGÇÖll find the incredibly beautiful, newly refurbished San Jose. ItGÇÖs a little more pricey, but totally worth it. Think Zen garden meets Texas motor court; really luxurious, landscaped, architecturally breathtaking. YouGÇÖll love it. Their website is fantastic, so check it out.
If youGÇÖre looking for something a little less home-grown and a little more like the usual hotel thing, good options would be the Hyatt Regency on Town Lake (208 Barton Springs) or the Radisson (111 E. Ceasar Chavez). Or, if youGÇÖre using a travel website looking for deals, search for hotels in the downtown / Town Lake area.
AIPF AND TOURING IN TEXAS:
FYI, the weekend following SlammastersGÇÖ Meeting (April 14 GÇô 17) is the annual Austin International Poetry Festival. Many of you have attended in the past GǪ hit www.aipf.org for more info. If youGÇÖd like to stick around for the festival, thereGÇÖs a whole week of great shows here in the Lone Star State. Featuring opportunities are also there for the taking for the week preceding SlammastersGÇÖ. And, mark your calendar for the annual Bluebonnet Poetry Slam with a $1,000 top prize in Conroe, Texas, April 24. Can I get a yee-haw!!!??!!
So, thereGÇÖs the scoop. Let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you in April.
