Neon by Michael Salinger
80 pgs. ISBN 0-933087-72-1 Published by Bottom Dog Press What happens when a punk grows up? Because that's what happens to Michael Salinger in Neon. What once was a welder's glare efficiently tucked into a Toolbelt of Cynicism has become Neon Has become Art, has become The Thing Illuminated. Of course Salinger is still a punk, too...Only now the work sets out a philosophy. Now he's given you something to hold, to relish, not fear. There's even prose here, sweet and sudden and folksy and smart and full of feeling. He invites you in, not kicks you out. To accomplish this all Salinger has to do was reinvent himself. Neon accomplishes this task. A poet, it seems might just be a punk grown up, and Neon makes a stunning debut. Bob Holman, creator of the PBS documentary, The United States of Poetry

Bio:  Michael Salinger has offered his brand of creative writing workshops and performances from Land O Lakes, Florida to Homer, Alaska. He has presented at the IRA International Convention, NCTE, OCTELA, KSRA, University of Dayton Literary Festival and at colleges and schools across the United States. Michael Salinger brings twenty years of writing experience to his performances and workshops. A fun and imaginative way to present the concepts of creative writing along with pens to the paper exercises and digestible theory.

Salinger's enthusiastic approach has been proven successful with a wide demographic. Middle school classes, university level graduate students and teachers alike have benefited from these lessons. The method employed rises to and prods forward the level of the participants. Plus, it is so much fun participants may not realize that they are learning until it is too late.

Recurring Themes in Your Work:
I believe poetry should be descriptive, image and metaphor laden language. The plot or story of a poem should be the meat that the burglar uses to distract the watchdog while he continues about his business. Poetry is photography for the imagination. The teaching of the appreciation and writing of good poetry, strong in the fundamentals of creative writing, is the goal that one should aspire to.

My work tends to focus on an instant, freezing a moment for further reflection - allowing the reader/listener to draw their own conclusions based on their own experience. Recurring themes include, family, interaction with nature, and work.

Describe your most profound slam-related experience:
While being on the finals stage as a participant in 1992 and 1998 may have been the most butterfly in the stomach producing experiences - stage managing the 2002 finals and being a member of the Executive Council has been the most rewarding.

The opportunity that Slam has given me to perform and interact with such a diversity of audiences and with so much talent is something I cherish, but working with the teachers in the trenches is where it all really happens.
