Venue Homepage: http://www.a2slam.com Bio: At age 56, Steve Marsh is not the oldest performance poet in the world, but he has been involved with the art form for a good long time. With over twenty years of experience in the high school classroom and over fourteen years of active participation in the Poetry Slam movement, he brings a rich history and a wealth of experience to stages across Michigan and North America. His poetry is a broad mixture of the serious and the silly with subject matter ranging from the changing roles for men in our culture to politics, to modern science's impact on our physical and spiritual lives, to a long series of "channeled" haiku from the dogs in his life.
Steve is currently the Executive Director of Poetry Slam, Incorporated, the non-profit organization that administers all the "official" poetry slams in the world and brings the National Poetry Slam, the largest single performance poetry festival, to a new city in North America each year. He is a poet with many published poems and the author of five self-published and distributed chapbooks and one CD of his original work.
Steve is currently at work editing and publishing a series of tall tales written by his father shortly before his death. Steve lives in the Ann Arbor area with his wife, Debora, three step-daughters whom he calls his own and two mixed breed dogs all of whom provide a wealth of inspiration for his poetic work.

I continue to ask those unanswerable questions: where does love come from, how do ethics emerge, what's up with politicians? Sometimes I'm serious, sometimes I'm not. One time I'll make fun of me. The next time I might make fun of you. I promise a very wide range of material, styles, and treatments. I have subject matter appropriate to middle school students, high school students, service clubs and professional organizations or I can host your annual erotic poetry night. And I understand the difference and select material accordingly. Describe your most profound slam-related experience:
"In 1991 I was on one of eight teams in the National Poetry Slam. We finished seventh, I think. It changed my life. Suddenly, I discovered it was good to be home with family I had never met. Poetry had been an important part of my life before that moment. Performance poetry has been a very large part of my life ever since." |
