General Discussion / Re: When Did You 'Fall In Love' With Spoken Word/Slam
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:43:07 PM »
Rustbelt 2007- that's right, real recently.
I started flirting with slam back in 01 here in MN, Thadra Sheridan ( I loved the piece she did that night by the way) saw me do a reading of some Lydia Lunch-esque stuff (for lack of a better mildly insulting word) .She invited me to the slam and I started going. I  had a few pieces I'd do but I was big into Improv at the time and there were schedule conflicts.
Nats was here in 02 but I didn't get to see a lot of it because I worked nights at a pub in South Minneapolis and was so broke at the time I couldn't afford to miss work.
Then in 2006 I got more into it actually competing enough to make the semi-finals here; I BOMBED hard fisrt round and then my acting career got a nice kick in the ass shoortly after. This made me realize I wanted to perform more and even make a living doing so (which I do now for the most part).  I took over Kieran's open mic one night invited everyone I knew And packed the house and got asked to stay on as co-host and then ended up taking the whole thing on solo. I had done a nice job of increasing attendance at the open mic and when Cynthia French was looking for someone to take over the slams she approached me ( and others including co-SM Allison) and Asked if I was interested. The show that was making me good money at the time was a about to end And I enjoyed running the open mic and helll I was at most slams anyway. So I said yes.

Then this past year I did our W&YI bouts (in LaX vs Milwaukee & in Des Moines vs Licoln and Omaha), the Amnesty International Slam in Milwaukee (where I was way out of my league) and those were sort of my courtship period. Then Came the Slammasters meeting in Madison. I had met Ed Mabrey( who organized the last RB) at the Amnesty Slam and knew he was running rustbelt this year. My Slam wasn't going to have the money to send a team to Rustbelt but I figured I could afford to ditch out on work for a few days and go see some kick ass poetry. So I bought a greyhound ticket (this drunk guy fell asleep on me) and went down to host some bouts.

It was fuckin' beautiful.
Amazing poets, amazing people, All these words blowin' my mind.

I realized that this was a community that I wanted and maybe even needed to be a part of.
Nats just furthered that bond. Oh the hippie love crap that has ensued.

So yeah Rust Belt 07

Correction to my last post Tuesday falls on the 29th of January not the 31st. So the 29th will be our WoWps bout. You must be pre-qualified to compete.

On a related note- When does the registration for WoWps open? Is it going to be first come first serve? I want to make sure I have a woman folk representing our fair state/city/slam family. I've already started qualifiers.  Any woman who places in the top three at a regular slam will be qualified to compete in our WoWps bout on Tuesday January 31st.   BTW Congrats on qualifying the other day Cynthia!

Wal-Mart  has this Fundraiser deal where they let you sell hot dogs or whatever in front of their store and then they make a donation matching your profits. I couldn't bring myself to let my team do that.  But if you can  "This chapbook was sponsored by your local  Wal-Mart Super store" :-\

awesome or needy....you be the judge. The only other thing that comes to mind is maybe letting people know how to put their merch in the online store. but a slammaster packet might not be the right place for that.

Delrica You are correct Allison and I do work as co-slammasters, We both attended the Slammasters meetings but for the Purpose of PSi we are one vote. Allison knows my password so she can post in the SM forum when she feels the need to. Although keeping track of forum activities is one of the duties that is  "mine" It's been a good system for us this year. With only a few minor hitches based on our disparate work schedules.

Here's my questions/ stuff I'd like to see in a new slam master packet:

How does the grantback program work? How does one go about retrieving money from their grantback account?

Do your W&YI poets have to be certified for the upcoming  Nationals or just  have a valid registration at the Time of the W&YI bout?

Can you be the slam master for more than one venue?

Include a copy of the  Robert's rules document that's in the Slam Master Files.

Explain that their selection Process has to appear on the web/ these forums.

INclude a notice stating that poets must arrive and be registered at Nationals on the morning that competition starts. ( this should cut down on the need for late emergency meetings)

Telll the SM's what forms the poets will have to have signed pre-nats and refer them to the Slam master files for download

Include the emails/contact info for Scott, Steve and the people who are willing to be mentors; Make to note where each Mentor runs their slam.

Maybe a list of fundraising ideas to help get their team to Nats

That's it for now Iffin' I think of anything else! I'll post again. Big Love -WD

If I think of anything else

General Discussion / Re: How and what did you pay for at NPS?
« on: August 15, 2007, 01:37:38 PM »
Team Minneapolis

We put all of our Summer Slam Door Money towards hotel and travel costs.
We did a wine tasting/poetry reading fundraiser (The Wine was a donation)
We sold frickin' raffle tickets
We did featured readings and shows we got paid for.
In the end despite our best efforts we came up about $500 short of our goal and each poet paid for part of their plane ticket and all of their food. I for one was so grateful for the free food at Ruta Maya at night it really helped cut on my expenses and I'd like thank PSi, Austin, Whoopeecat and everyone else who helped make that happen.

There you go.

www.openoffice.org It's for downloading your own office programs but free. Hope the link is right. When I used the brochure options I had to adjust the margins  A LOT to make my book. So much that "the ghost in the machine" told me I was beyond the printable area. But it worked.

Put down that character sheet and be your own bard!

Tuesday July 10th will officially be our first ever GEEK SLAM! & trivia Contest. You'll have three minutes to perform you're nerdy poetry! Stay tuned to the myspace blog as details emerge!

7:30 sign-up 8pm Show.  $5 cover Kieran's Irish Pub! 330 2nd Ave S. Down town Minneapolis.

Rules for the evening:

12 poets compete in this battle of the Nerdiest! Poets your order of competion will be effected by your Dexterity Score so show up early! So you can choose an ideal slot!

Poets get three minutes to perform an original piece of work. There are three round of competition total.

BONUS: Props and costumes and musical instruments are A OK! (Normally Such things are not allowed) Side note another person is considered a prop so I guess that means group pieces are Allowed as well.

These poets will be judged by 5 random judges from the audience! Judges will be recieving "magical items" to help (or hinder? ) each poet on their quest to become our first ever Geek Slam Champion!

Judges will rate the poets from 0.00 to 10.00 based on the overall geekiness and quality of  poetry/performance/ whatever else they feel like judging based on.

Those of you who regularly slam realize this is an ADDITIONAL DECIMAL  POINT! Crazy :o

General Discussion / Re: Memorization question
« on: May 03, 2007, 03:39:20 PM »
Here's my take on ways to make an on paper poem more acceptable to the slam  audience. 1. Music stand Most slam poems don't exceed two pages typed in size 16 font which is pretty big. Break it up nice so it's easy to follow. You're not actually holding paper which frees up your hands and allows you to make more dominate gestures etc...  at our last slam i got the highest score in the first round with a music stand piece. The majority of my competition was memorized. 2. Pretty Paper. I often staple my typed pieces on to construction paper. This prevents the paper from shaking and it looks like I took more time than just printing something out. You could also just use a thicker card stock type paper to print your pieces I typically avoid using white printer paper and go with a tan or soft blue it feels less stark to me and looks nicer. 3. Leather (or pleather) bound journals Every time I see A poet read out of one it always looks nice. Please avoid the spiral note book: although it's served me well in the past too. It's a slam who knows what's going to happen.

Side note- Charles please explain to me why you should drink warm, not cold, water?

Hope this was helpful!
