General Discussion / Re: no repeat rule

BTW, Scott, please do not hate me/us. I have not made this amendment in a whimsial way; I had reason to do so. In fact, there are good reasons on both sides of this debate (that's why we continue it). If the matter was simple, it would have been resolved many years ago w/o further revisits. (Plus, you owe me a bear anyway.)

I made an amendment. The reason why was twofold -- the same arguments that support the idea of allowing two repeats (in essence, it's better for the show), support the idea of no-limit repeats. Furthermore, no-limit repeats rule (i.e., that everythng is a fair game on the final stage) is the rule easier to police.

People who argue that we should have a no-repeat rule support the idea by claiming that it encourages writing. That's a good argument, I think. But there is another way to achieve just that objective, I thought. Namely, we can have a no-repeat-from-tear-to-year rule. That is, any poem used on the final stage cannot be used on the final stage in subsequent years.

So, that was my reasoning when I proposed the ammendmen.

Again, I would be willing to compromise. You may convince me that allowing two repeats is the happy golden mean.

Scott,

I definitely think about compromise. (Generally, my mind about this issue is not made, and I casted the votes on both sides of the debate).

Agree with Amy on all points. I think having a no-repeat rule that spans finals stages for all tournaments is a bit extreme, but I would support it being carried from finals to finals for NPS. After all, it's the way we do it at Canadian Nationals. *grins*
Personally, I do not think it's too extreme. I would vote for this sort of no-repeat rule. (Then again, in th interest of full exposure, I doubt this rule will ever affect me or anyone from Corpus Christi.)

I would vote for (most versions of) no-repeat from tear to year.

I got sick (sorethroat) during the trip to WPB.

Despite of it, I had a blast.

Much of it, because of great work by Erik, Billy Mac, and the rest of volunteers.

Adri,

remember that this year we are back to 4x4 (and 4x5) format. So, you need to have 4 poets on the team.

Ballabajoomba Poetry Slam
The 1st and the 3rd Friday of each month (occasionally other Fridays)
The Tango Tea Room
505 S. Water St, TX 78401
(361) 883-9123
(http://ballabajoomba.tripod.com)
Open Mic 8-8:30 p.m; Open Slam 8:30-11:00

Each slam max 16 poets; cuts determined by the number of poets who signed up for a given slam and the time. Usually three rounds with the final cut to 3.

Slamoff determines who qualifies for the team to travel to NPS. To qualify for the slamoff, a poet must read 5 times during the year or make three times the cut to the top 3. Semis narrow down the field to 9-10, the final slamoff determines the team. If one of the top 4 poets cannot go to the Nationals, the next highest ranked poet is qualified for the team.

Slamoff determines who represents Ballabajoomba at iWPS.

General Discussion / Qualification System For NPS

I like the idea of the deadline for proxies. I think perhaps it should by by midnight before the slammasters meeting starts.

Furthermore, I was thinking that, perhaps, we should expect that, when someone sends a proxy, s/he also should give some instructions about how to vote; at least, how to vote on the issues already on the agenda.

I know this point would be hard to enforce, for what exactly (or even roughly)  counts as "some instructions." So, I am not sure how to state this requirement in a precise and enforceable way. Still, I would like someone who sends me a proxy to also give me instructions concerning the items and issues to be discussed during the meeting. I'd like to be convinced that this someone does not simply blows things off, to clear the hoops, but rather thinks about the agenda and give some guidance about how the issues are to be decided. (I remember that, on one occasion when I was not able to be at the slammasters meeting, I send Mike henry several pages of detailed instructions and some general principles to be used when the votes are taken. Just saying.)
