General Discussion / Re: Would you use this? (Short Poll)
« on: November 17, 2007, 03:14:16 PM »
Short answers:

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. No, but I would guess that some newer slams would find it useful.

National Poetry Slam Teams Compete in Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., – On Friday, October 12, the Cambridge YMCA Theater will host an eight-team regional poetry slam. Teams from all over the northeastern U.S. will converge on this beautifully restored theater for an all-ages night of poetry slam.

For twenty-one years, poets in bars, universities, coffeehouses, and libraries around the world have been engaging each other in the competetive performance art of poetry slam. Performers use all the tricks of storytelling, theatre, stand-up comedy, and cold hard poetry to wheedle points from judges selected from the audience.

The event on October 12 will feature two local teams from Cambridge, in addition to teams from Worcester, Providence R.I., Manchester N.H., Wilmington, Del., Lincroft, N.J., and White Plains, N.Y. The winning teams of these bouts qualify to attend the 2008 National Poetry Slam in Madison, Wisconsin.

Bouts will be hosted by local star emcees Ryk McIntyre and Alex Charalambides. DJ Muse will spin before and after the show.

Doors for this show open at 7:00 and the first slam starts promptly at 8:00.
This is an all ages show. Parents and other concerned parties should be advised that poetry slam is an art likely to contain adult themes and language.

Tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the show, or online at
http://www.poetrytickets.com
Ticket cost is $5 in advance, $7 at the door.

For the 2012 IWPS representative, all open slam winners from April 2011 through January 18, 2011 are qualified to try out at the January 2012 World Qualifiers. For the 2013 rep, all open slam winners from August 2012 through March of 2013 will qualify for the April 2013 World Qualifiers. Future qualification cycles will run approximately from August through March with selection in April.

Poets who have won a single open poetry slam OR held the Champion of Champions title at any time during the qualification period are invited to compete in night one of the World Qualifiers (semi-finals); qualified poets will be listed on the venue website and, if possible, contacted by the SlamMaster by email.

Top-scoring poets from night one will be invited to compete on night two (finals). The winner of the finals will represent the Boston Poetry Slam @ the Cantab Lounge at the next Individual World Poetry Slam.

What follow are the official rules for the Cantab World Qualifier Slams. The number of rounds and advancing poets are subject to change, depending on competitor attendance at the semi-finals. Be advised that the most current version of the rules will always be available at the official website: bostonpoetryslam.com.

Cantab World Qualifier Slam Rules (both nights)

    * Poets who wish to slam will check in to draw no later than 9:00 P.M.
    * Poets will have to pay the cover charge.
    * Competing poets may not read in or host any portion of the open mic or slam.
    * Competing poets may not work the door, wait tables, or bartend.
    * Five judges (or teams of judges) will be selected from the audience by the slam host and bout manager. Up to two of these judges may be Cantab "regulars" as per the discretion of the slam host and bout manager. All judges will be encouraged to choose poetry over performance.
    * For both nights, all IWPS rules apply: original work, no props, no costumes, no music, penalties levied for exceeding the time limit.

Cantab World Qualifier Semi-Finals Rules and Format
o All poets who have qualified to slam, even those who do not intend to attend IWPS, are encouraged to slam.
o There will be at least one warm-up poet, then two rounds of slam, with the order drawn randomly for each round. Whether there is a break between rounds or not is left to the discretion of the host and bout manager.
o Round one will have a time limit of 2:10. Round two will have a time limit of 1:10.
o Poets may use any original poem in their repertoire, including poems used in previous open slams and poems used to qualify in previous years.
o The top ten cumulative scorers will advance to finals the following week. If there is a tie for the tenth spot to advance, all tied poets will advance.

Cantab World Qualifier Finals Rules and Format
o Poets who slam in the finals are considered committed to representing the Cantab at the Individual World Poetry Slam. Poets who are not interested in representing the Cantab at IWPS may not slam in finals.
o Poets may not use poems they used in the previous week's semi-final.
o AS OF FEBRUARY 6, 2009: ROUND ONE WILL BE SEEDED LOW TO HIGH BY FINISH IN THE IWPS SEMI-FINALS. Rounds two, three, and four remain random draw.
o In the case of ties to advance, all poets tied for the last advancing slot will advance.
o There will be at least one warm-up poet, then one round of slam. Time limit will be 3:10. The top eight round one scorers will advance to the next round.
o Round two time limit will be 3:10. The top six round two scorers will advance to the next round.
o Round three time limit will be 4:10. The top four round three scorers will advance to the next round.
o Round four time limit will be 3:10. The top round four scorer will represent the Cantab at IWPS.
o If there is a tie for the top slot, all tied poets will return to the stage for another 2:10 round. The order will be the same as the last round. The top scoring poet of the tie-breaking round will represent the Cantab at IWPS.

The following is expected of the poet who qualifies to represent the Cantab at the Individual World Poetry Slam:

    * Attendance at the next IWPS.
    * Financial responsibility for travel and stay at IWPS (beyond whatever the venue is able to raise).

If the poet is unable to fulfill these responsibilities, or the poet declares a preference to not represent the Cantab at IWPS, another poet will be chosen.

The replacement hierarchy for the IWPS representative is as follows:

   1. The next available top scorer in the final rounds of the Cantab World Qualifier Finals.
   2. The current Champion of Champions of the 8x8 series.
   3. The next available top scorer in the Cantab World Qualifier Semi-Finals.
   4. The top scorer in an open poetry slam held exclusively for the purpose of choosing a new representative, if time and venue constraints allow.
   5. The next available top scorer in the final rounds of the most recent Cantab Team Selection Finals.
   6. The most recent Head-to-Head Haiku Champion.
   7. The next available top scorer in the most recent Cantab Team Selection Semi-Finals.
   8. The next available least recent winner of the open poetry slam since the Cantab Team Selection Slams.
   9. Open vote among all interested parties, wherein said parties may not vote for themselves. Ties will be broken by the vote of the SlamMaster.

Poets are invited to contact the SlamMaster directly by email (slammaster@bostonpoetryslam.com) with any questions or concerns.

The Boston Poetry Slam’s National Poetry Slam team selection schedule is currently in transition. For the 2012 team, all open slam winners from August 17, 2011 through March 28, 2012 will qualify to try out in April 2012. For the 2013 team, all open slam winners from May of 2012 through December of 2012 will qualify to try out at the new team selection time, which will be January of 2013. Future qualification cycles will run approximately from May through December with selection in January.

Poets who have won a single open poetry slam OR held the Champion of Champions title at any time during the qualification period are invited to compete in night one of the Team Selection Slams (preliminaries); qualified poets will be listed on the venue website and, whenever possible, contacted by the SlamMaster by email.

Top-scoring poets from night one will be invited to compete on night two (semi-finals). The top-scoring poets from night two move on to night three (finals). At the end of the finals, the top five scoring poets comprise the team that will represent the Boston Poetry Slam @ the Cantab Lounge at the next National Poetry Slam.

What follow are the official rules for the Cantab Team Selection Slams. The number of rounds and advancing poets are subject to change, depending on National Poetry Slam team size and competitor attendance at the semi-finals. Be advised that the most current version of the rules will always be available at the official website: bostonpoetryslam.com.

Cantab Team Selection Slam Rules (all three nights)

    * Only qualified poets listed on the website may slam.
    * There will always be at least one warm-up poet before the slam. Whether or not there is a break and/or sorbet poet between rounds of the slam will be left to the discretion of the host and bout manager.
    * Scores are not cumulative between nights; each night is clean slate.
    * All NPS rules apply: original work, no props, no costumes, no music, 3:10 or less.

Cantab Team Selection Preliminaries Rules and Format
o All poets who have qualified to slam, even those who do not intend to attend NPS, are encouraged to slam.
o Before the slam begins, poets will draw a random order for both rounds. Poets who have guaranteed draws (i.e.: winners of the group slams) may apply them on this night only.
o Poets may use any original poem in their repertoire, including poems used in previous open slams and poems used to qualify in previous years.
o The top twelve cumulative scorers will advance to finals the following week. If there is a tie for the last spot to advance, all tied poets will advance.

Cantab Team Selection Semi-Finals Rules and Format
o Poets who are qualified to slam in the semi-finals but do not intend to commit to the Cantab Slam Team are encouraged (but not required) to drop out to permit the next poet back in the prelims to advance.
o The order of the first round will be based on the cumulative finish from preliminaries (lowest finisher first, top poet last). The order for the second round will be by random draw.
o Poets may not use poems they used in the previous week's preliminaries.
o The top nine cumulative scorers will advance to finals the following week. If there is a tie for the last spot to advance, all tied poets will advance.

Cantab Team Selection Finals Rules and Format
o Poets who slam in the finals are considered committed to the Cantab Slam Team. Poets who are not interested in attending NPS with the Cantab may not slam in finals.
o Poets may not use poems they used in the previous weeks' preliminaries or semi-final.
o The order of the first round will be based on the cumulative finish from semi-finals (lowest finisher first, top poet last). The order for the second and third rounds will be by random draw.
o The top five scorers (cumulative over all three rounds) comprise the Cantab Slam Team.
o If there is a tie for the fifth slot, all tied poets will return to the stage for one more round. The order will be the same as the last round. Standard NPS tie-breaker rules will be used (each judge will indicate a preference, not a score).

The following is expected of poets who qualify for the Cantab Slam Team:

    * Attendance at the National Poetry Slam of that calendar year, assuming the Boston Poetry Slam @ the Cantab Lounge is qualified to attend.
    * Financial responsibility for travel and stay at NPS (beyond whatever the team and venue are able to raise), assuming attendance.
    * Open mic attendance at the Cantab 2-4 times per month.
    * Practice with the team at least 2-4 times per month.
    * Respect and support of teammates, coach, and home venue.

If a team member is unable to fulfill these responsibilities, or the poet declares a desire to depart the team and/or slam for another team, the poet will no longer be considered a member of the Cantab Slam Team for the purposes of PSi.

If a team member departs, but the team is still at the minimum size for NPS competition, the remaining team members will decide if they wish to replace the team member, with final discretion falling to the SlamMaster. If the departure of one or more team members causes the team to be under the minimum size for NPS competition, the team member(s) will automatically be replaced until the team reaches minimum size.

In all cases, the replacement hierarchy for a team member is as follows:

   1. The next available top scorer(s) in the final rounds of the Cantab Team Selection Finals.
   2. The current Champion of Champions of the 8x8 series.
   3. The top scorer(s) in an open poetry slam held exclusively for the purpose of choosing a new team member (or members), if time and venue constraints allow.
   4. The next available top scorer(s) in the Cantab Team Selection Semi-Finals.
   5. The next available top scorer(s) in the Cantab Team Selection Preliminaries.
   6. The next available least recent winner(s) of the open poetry slam since the Cantab Team Selection Slams.
   7. Open vote among all interested parties, wherein said parties may not vote for themselves. Ties will be broken by the vote of the SlamMaster.

Poets are invited to contact the SlamMaster directly by email (slammaster@bostonpoetryslam.com) with any questions or concerns.

General Discussion / Re: How and what did you pay for at NPS?
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:02:33 PM »
We don't do a lot of fundraising for Boston-Cantab: most of our funding comes from door money at our show. On team slam nights and for the team features, we increase our door cost to $5 (from our usual $3), plus we sell chapbooks and book other local shows.

This year, we paid for NPS registration, DIPS registration airfare, 7 nights of hotels, team shirts, and a rental car. We came up about $400 short and the team absorbed the cost.

I helped Manchester qualify for NPS this year (proxied for them at SM in April, ran a W&YI in Boston) and I think what would have helped most is a calendar of events and deadlines, even with approximate dates. It would really help the SM plan for the year.

Examples of how other venues run their slam-offs or qualify for the team might also be helpful. "Selected through competition" is pretty vague for a new SM.

World-Famous Performance Poets Perform at Boston’s Paradise Lounge

BOSTON, Mass., – On Saturday, September 29, the Boston Poetry Slam will present a special one-night engagement of Solomon Sparrow’s Electric Whale Revival. This group of five of the world’s best-known slam poets will appear at the Paradise Lounge in Boston as part of their coast-to-coast one-month tour.

Anis Mojgani, Buddy Wakefield, Dan Leamen, Derrick Brown, and Mike McGee have each toured the country individually, winning myriad poetry slam titles and innumerable hearts along the way, but this tour is the only chance to see these five very different poetic voices on the stage together.

In addition, this one-time event will showcase two poet/folk musicians: Blair from Detroit and local Shira Erlichman. These two prominent poets will only appear with the Revival for this one Boston show.

Collectively, the poets in this show represent every National and World Poetry Slam since 2003, save one. Any one of these artists would be enough to pack a poetry house to the gills; all seven of them are likely to burn the place down.

Doors for this show open at 8:00. Blair will perform at 9:00, Shira Erlichman at 10:00, and the Revival takes the stage at 11:00 sharp. The show is 18+.

Tickets may be purchased at the Paradise box office or online at http://thedise.tickets.musictoday.com.
Ticket cost is $12 in advance, $15 at the door.

General Discussion / Re: What Would You Have Done?
« on: April 28, 2007, 09:24:00 AM »
Rules is rules. You told the poets to be there by a certain time, they flubbed up. You asked poets who had been responsible enough to arrive on time if they wanted to make an exception, they declined.

I'd have done the same thing. Except I wouldn't have even asked the poets if they wanted to wait, actually.

There was a risk of a similar situation in our venue this year; one of last year's team members (favored to make the team) was flying home on the evening of the finals slam and there was a good chance that he'd be delayed. I told all the poets that if they confirmed their attendance with me in advance, the host would draw their number in their absence and if they were called to the stage and not present, too bad.

Nobody should be bent out of shape because you followed rules that all competitors were aware of. That doesn't mean some people won't be, of course, but I'd stand by the decision.

Do you think Regie would miss a fellow Chicago poet when he came to town?

Seriously, that show was like an effin' Springsteen concert. At the end of it, we had Marc Smith, the JR3, Tony Brown, Faro, Michael Brown, Adam Stone, Richard Cambridge, Iyeoka Okoawo and Regie all up on the stage improving some crazy fun.

All recorded, I might add. I can't wait to use that venue again.

Hey, guys:

I'm in the market for a new host for slamnews.com (it's currently hosted by friends who are cutting back on their hardware). I don't need much: the site is small and there's no streaming anything on it. The only real requirement I have is that I get unlimited emails@slamnews.

Who hosts your personal or venue site? Suggestions? Anyone to avoid?

Hello, folks:

As some of you may recall, my dad (Rich Beaubien) was at the Individual World Poetry Slam this year, celebrating his birthday and taking photos of many of you. He had a fantastic time and asked me to send his love to all of you.

Lots of folks have asked where the photos he took can be viewed. So far, he's only got a small batch up, just from the draw, but he hopes to add the photos from prelis and finals over the next a couple of weeks. Here's the link to his site:

http://www.intheviewfinder.net

Folks interested in prints or high-res copies for press purposes can contact me and I'll put you in touch with Dad.
