General Discussion / Re: Abbey Evacuated... AGAIN!
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:36:48 PM »
Remember that teetering I was talking about? Well...this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiNdbocSMEQ identifies about the first moment when the levees were overtopped this morning (June 23). The river is expected to rise about 6 and a half feet higher than this by Saturday or Sunday. One in ten homes has federal flood insurance. Abbey's does not. There will be more horrible images as the next few days move on. If you pray, then pray. If you control good energy, do that. If you just want to send a few bucks to the Red Cross, do that. This is a flood literally twice as big as ever recorded on this river system since records were begun in the 1800s.

We have Abbey and Henrik safe in the Whitmore Lake complex for a while. Eric continues the face to face battle with the elements. Minot is literally teetering on the brink of a complete disaster at this moment and the future looks bleak. In the meantime, probably a good time to cut her some slack. The weather hasn't done its part lately.

Nah, I'm just stirring shit. If we were a sport, I'd see no reason either. I think the people who win the emmies, grammies, greenies and meanies are all having  pretty good year too. We are so much more than a "sport." And...well, I'll let ya'll chew on it a while.

And did it make you think again about the "Slammies?" (Yeah, I know, that name belongs to wrestling.) I also saw a little of the Adult film awards on cable late last night. Come'on folks. Slam is 25 years old this year. PSi is 14. Isn't it time to step up?

I am so sorry to hear this. She and I were "brothers" in arms. How did it happen?

It will be up today as soon as we work out a couple of details.

28
We have been sending poets, by invitation and with financial support on their side, to the World Cup for several years running. They have been coming here too, we have hosted the Swedish National Champ, the German National Champ, the Australian National Champ for example.

I agree, cross promotion is a great idea. But the last two iWPS events, especially the most recent iWPS are not typical of this event. They are, however, typical of this economy.

29
As usual, my dry humor fails in this medium.

Yes, iWPS could travel to another country. It already has.

I don't like I NAPS.

If you want another event for the continent, that would be fun, wouldn't it>

The UMexiCan Slam or some such.

Probably have to hold it in Mexico or Canada because it is easier to get US poets into Mexico than to get Mexican poets into the US.

30
Duncan, add this. We did iWPS in the far off land of Vancouver one year. Remember? Of course the event can go anywhere if it is an international event. Many times we have had poets from all kinds of places. The market is why it was US and Canada this year. In the past US, Canada, France, Japan, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland. And we have had interest from Two African nations and Mexico as well. History of Slam usually involves more than just since your consciousness arrived. I don't intend that to sound as mean as it does. But it supposed to be a pointed comment.
