General Discussion / Rattle Calls for Submissions
« on: January 05, 2007, 05:56:34 PM »
As announced at the 2006 slam family meeting, please don't forget that submissions for RATTLE's special tribute section to the poetry slam (celebrating slam's 21st birthday) are due FEBRUARY 1. The issue will feature an accompanying audio CD, choice interviews with some of your favorite slammers, and an essay from yours truly!

The GUIDELINES:

The poetry journal RATTLE is honoring the 21st birthday of Slam with a special issue to be released June 2007, featuring interviews, essays, and an audio CD of the poetry section performed.

Send a recording of up to 5 poems, including a cover letter, the text of the pieces, and a SASE for return of the materials. We would prefer the recordings to be windows-compatible audio files on a CD, but we will also listen to cassette tapes. If no audio is available, feel free to send the text alone, assuming we will be able to arrange audio later. Preference may be given to submissions with higher-quality audio.

No poems previously published, or scheduled for publication, in national literary journals (i.e. those with ISSN or ISBNs). Works already appearing in books, chapbooks, or CDs are fine, as long as you hold their rights.

Those published will need to sign a contract granting RATTLE duplication rights on the audio. All other rights revert to the authors upon publication. Payment is two copies of the issue.

Send submissions to:

RATTLE
12411 Ventura Blvd
Studio City, CA 91604

Deadline for Submissions: February 1st, 2007

General Discussion / How Far Can Slam Go?
« on: December 07, 2006, 08:09:43 AM »
Well, all the way to...

I just got cc'd on this e-mail from Paul Devlin, producer/director of SlamNation and Marc Smith, creater of Poetry Slam and Founder of PSI. I thought everyone would want to know.

Quote

Dear Marc  -

I arrived in Antarctica today to continue shooting a new movie, BLAST (check it out - www.blastthemovie.com).  I'm staying at McMurdo Station, which is like an old west mining town.

And what do I see on the recreation board but a notice of a "Sun Slam" (it's summer here with 24-hour daylight).  Poetry reading with judges.

It's official now.  Slam Poetry has reached the ends of the earth.

Paul

Next leap? To the COSMOS...and beyond!

Heads up!

FYI,

Just got this e-mail from Karen Finneyfrock, former SlamMaster from Seattle.

Hi Steve,

I just noticed a story from AP wires today that indicates a change in the passport/driver's license use for travel into and out of Canada. The story says that starting Jan. 23, all travel in and out of the country, including returning Americans will need to show passports. I wanted to alert you since that could have an incredible impact on iWPS. I assume most poets were planning on travelling with driver's license and it's too late for most to get passports in time.

Hope things are going well otherwise!

Karen

I will spread this information across our internal network and I will be applying for my passport this week.

General Discussion / New Video
« on: July 27, 2006, 02:40:17 PM »
Just to let everyone know the NPS 2005 video and the iWPS 2006 video have both arrived in time for duplication before NPS and a few copies are also available from www.poetryslam.com and www.thewordsmithpress.com specifically from the bottom of this page:
http://www.poetryslam.com/modules.php?name=Store&mode=catdetail&catid=7
or near the bottom of this page
http://www.thewordsmithpress.com/content/products.php

We will be getting them up on Amazon.com too in the very near future so we could use some review writers for them over there.

I promise to get contributor's copies out as soon as possible, but it may not happen until we get home from NPS. I'm sorry about that but I'm scrambling on these right now.

General Discussion / Proof, Detroit and a Poet's Wisdom
« on: April 19, 2006, 04:31:20 PM »
from an article in today's Metro Times:

"I think we have to stop ignoring that the shit we say affects the general
consciousness of people," says local poet Jamaal "Versiz" May, who was a close friend to Proof. "All these idle threats on wax, 'I'm'a kill you, I'm'a tie up yo kids,' that shit ain't cute no more. You gotta start asking what effect does it have on people, and the way rappers manifest their own destinies."

General Discussion / Official PSI Podcast
« on: January 24, 2006, 01:33:13 AM »
I am as proud as you can imagine to say that PSI is launching an official monthly podcast. The first episode is up and running. It is a 25 minute interview of Taylor Mali by Don McIver. You may or may not know that Don is a regular on KNUM public radio in Albuquerque, so his skills come pre-honed and professional. Huge thanks to Don for making this committment.

The RSS feed is located at http://www.poetryslam.com/podcast

If you have iTunes:
Open iTunes
Goto ‘Advanced/Subscribe to Podcast…”
Enter http://www.poetryslam.com/podcast and hit OK

If you are prompted to know how often to look for updates, make it monthly.

If you just want to use your browser to listen and not subscribe point your browser here:

http://poetryslam.com/~psipodcasts/psipodcast2-06.mp3

Remember this one is coming early. Next episode on or about March 1.

Enjoy.

General Discussion / People seeking more freebies

Hello all, I have received the following request through the PSI website today. I have responded politely that his request is presumptuous but I would pass it on. I am not participating, but you may if you choose. Here's the pitch:

Sender's Name: Jeff Winke
Sender's Email: jeff_winke@yahoo.com
Message: Could you please pass this request along to those who might be interested in helping us out. Thanks!

Seeking poets who might have an extra copy of their chapbook or book they\'d be willing to donate to a lucky student.  Each week, during my 8-week undergraduate poetry class, there will be a drawing to see who wins the book a poet has been generous enough to donate.  The winner will be responsible for reading your book, reviewing it, and selecting a favorite poem to read to the class the following week.  If you like, contact information and book price should be included so that others in the class can buy your book.  Students will be STRONGLY encouraged to buy the books of poets who, after all, were kind enough to contribute a book to their education.  If you\'re willing, please send your book (autographed would be nice) and contact and price details to:

General Discussion / We are mainstream!
« on: July 24, 2005, 07:41:22 PM »
Watching the Simpsons tonight and the town of Springfield needed to expand it's tourism industry to bring money into town. The mayor calls for "any crazy suggestions" to bring tourism back. In the ensuing list, someone suggested Poetry Slam. Alas, slam was not ultimately selected as they went for legalizing same sex marriage instead.

I've never been so proud!
