General Discussion / Re: How To Contact PSi
« on: April 25, 2013, 05:25:50 PM »
I have edited all of the info in the original post to be accurate.

Host City bid master is updated with instructions to send completed material to the Executive Director, Karrie Waarala.
If you are considering putting in a bid for one of PSi's events, please feel free to use the same email address to ask questions, make inquiries about open dates, or to get help from PSi in explaining and filling in the information requested on this form.
Psi's experience in running these events grows and develops every year.  As a host city, you will have a good deal of support from people who have been down this road before, some of them, many times.
     Thanks for considering to host!

Karrie, I am very happy to say that working through the process of dotting the i's and crossing the t's and getting all the work done to begin the process of having you work as the new Executive Director has been rewarding and exciting.   Welcome.

General Discussion / PSi Hires New Executive Director
« on: February 05, 2013, 05:24:41 PM »
Karrie Waarala of Ypsilanti Michigan is the new Executive Director of Poetry Slam, Inc.  The Executive Council of PSi welcomes Ms Waarala to her new position, and we are very excited to have her bring her wealth of experience to Poetry Slam, Inc.
Ms Waarala has degrees in Accounting and English and a Master of Library and Information Sciences degree, and most recently, an MFA in Creative Writing.  She has also performed poetry as a competitor at the National Poetry Slam in 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2006, and at the Individual World Poetry Slam in 2008.  Ms. Waarala has also been on the stage as an Emcee for all three of the National tournaments over the years.
Ms. Waarala has been a member of Poetry Slam, Inc. since 2000, and is also a member of The Association of Writers and Writing Programs.  She has done readings and workshops in numerous states around the country and has been published in more than twenty five journals, magazines and anthologies, and has been nominated for The Pushcart Prize several times in the last two years.
The selection process for the new Executive Director spanned several months and included some highly qualified candidates who all expressed their visions of where PSi is and where PSi may be headed.   The EC thanks each candidate for the time and  thought that went in to discussing the future of this organization.   We are a better body because of that.

Please distribute widely!!

General Discussion / Re: NPS 2012 competing teams
« on: July 27, 2012, 05:32:50 PM »
I'm not trying to be obnoxious (too late!), but I thought there really was an intent around requiring a slam to be open to all ages in order to be NPS-eligible (though exceptions are pretty regularly granted). Is that covered over in venue certification instead?
Amy is on the right track here.  There is no confusion in the wording.  The team must be selected from an ongoing reading series whose venue has the characteristics of
Quote
Teams must be chosen from an ongoing slam or reading series open to all poets regardless of age, sex, race, ability, appearance, or sexual orientation.
The "series" is "open to all".  It does not say the team that comes out of that series may be all ages.  This is a general statement of which venues may send teams to NPS, ones that meet PSI certification.  It does not have anything to say about who may be on that team, nor about what the separate and specific requirements are for team members or individual poets at a specific event.
For someone to compete in NPS, team members must be 21 plus, unless 18 plus is ok'ed by the host city because of the availability of 18 to 20 year old friendly venues.  This language was passed by slammasters in the spring meeting of 2005, I believe.
For someone to compete in WOWPS, that poet must live life as a woman.   The fact that the venue qualifies to send a woman by being "open to all" doesn't mean they can send just anyone to this event.  That seems pretty clear.
In like manner, you can't point to the language cited above about a venue being "open to all" and say the qualifications for team members for NPS are unclear.  They are not.  One statement refers to the operations of the slam venue, the other clearly states the restrictions/qualifications for team members.
I understand pulling for your team members.  Glad to hear your poet is 18 years old, and is able to compete.

I am very excited to be back in Boston for NPS 2013, and very grateful to Simone and her team for picking up the short preparation period when Chicago decided not to host in 2013.
As for Simone's comment that NPS 2014 is due for bid in August, I'm sorry to say that the SM vote for NPS 2014 should have been in March at WOWPS in Denver.  Bid cycle posted below.  What happens when we did not have any qualified bids in March is that the selection process falls to the EC for securing a host as soon as possible to allow for a 2 year preparation period for the event.
I am very glad to say that the EC has acted on securing a host for NPS 2014, and I will have an announcement very soon.

Bid Cycle:
otes for NPS occur:
NPS 2012 - SM Meeting March 2010
NPS 2013 - SM Meeting March 2011
NPS 2014 - SM Meeting March 2012
NPS 2015 - SM Meeting March 2013
NPS 2016 - SM Meeting March 2014

Votes for iWPS occur: **
iWPS 2012 - SM Meeting August 2010
iWPS 2013 - SM Meeting August 2011
iWPS 2014 - SM Meeting August 2012
iWPS 2015 – SM Meeting August 2013
iWPS 2016 – SM Meeting August 2014

WOWPS **
tbd by EC, announced at March SM meetings

If you are interested in seeing one of PSI's inspiring events in your town, please take a look at the bid process and forms that are in a thread at the top of this forum, and also, please email me, even if you are still in the germinal phase of thinking maybe you might want to host an event someday.  Each event has an event coordinator, whose job is to help you complete a good bid, and then help you coordinate a most successful event.  Not saying it's easy, just saying we have pretty good processes in place.

The next couple of events where bids are needed are (if memory serve me correctly):
iWPS 2013 and 2014
WOWPS 2014
NPS 2015

Poetry Slam, inc, is very pleased to announce that our largest event The National Poetry Slam will be returning to Boston/Cambridge in 2013.   Simone Beaubien submitted a bid to host NPS 2013 that has been accepted by the EC.  She has met with her committee from NPS 2011 and they are committed to working on making NPS 2013 even better than the most excellent NPS 2011 that they did such an outstanding job of running from start to finish.
Congrats and thanks to Simone and her team!!

General Discussion / Re: Boycott Nationals??
« on: May 09, 2012, 10:39:43 AM »
Unfortunately, from what I've read, NC is the last southern state to put this in to the state constitution.  I also read that the language does not only apply to gay marriage, it bans civil unions of all types.
I like Houston's idea of doing service that somehow helps the community this bill attmpts to harm.

Thank you, Inkera!
I encourage you to make reservations now!   Credit card to secure the rooms, but they don't charge the card now.

General Discussion / Interested in Hosting NPS 2014?
« on: February 25, 2012, 04:15:11 PM »
Time to get your info in if you are interested in hosting NPS 2014 (actually a bit past time).
You can find the bid form in this thread of the Forums:
http://www.poetryslam.com/forum/index.php?topic=5438.msg57811#msg57811

I am very happy to help in any way you may need.  Questions, comments, how this all works, discussions of what you are really doing by jumping in to this....
We have a string of several very successful National Poetry Slam events in a row going here.   I'm looking forward to working with one of you to continue that run.
Traditionally slammasters have been the ones who submit bids, but it does not need to be.
NPS 2012 is hosted by a group led by Bloomenthal Arts.
NPS 2013 was originally awarded to Chicago Slam Works, another non-profit group.
I am currently talking with a college who is interested in submitting a bid for either 2013 or 2014.
PSI is open to hearing what you have to say.

Feel free to post questions or comments here, or to email me

General Discussion / NPS 2013 Chicago bid withdrawn
« on: February 25, 2012, 04:04:08 PM »
I unfortunately need to inform you that Chicago Slam Works has withdrawn their bid to host NPS 2013.   You may recall that the bid was vetted by the EC in January of 2011, and Slammasters voted to approve Chicago NPS 2013 in March of 2011.
Marc Smith informed me that due to other events coming to Chicago within a few weeks of the anticipated date of NPS 2013, he didn't think that Chicago Slam Works could market the event successfully.   The board of Chicago Slam Works took a vote, and informed me that they would indeed withdraw the bid.
I have known this for some time.   I informed the EC immediately and was hoping to have someone else lined up, but that has not happened as of this date.   I have had several cities express interest, but that is not a solid bid at this point.
So, if you are interested in hosting NPS 2013, on an accelerated schedule, please let me know.   I will help you fill in the bid forms, and help you through the approval process with the EC.   It is now an EC decision since the SM's approved the Chicago bid on time, and this move takes us past the standard approval timeframe.
Someone who has hosted in recent years would be an excellent choice, either an NPS or one of the other PSI events.
Questions, thoughts, suggestions, feel free to post here, or email me at sampsonhenry at gmail dot com
Yes, I am bummed that this is not going to be in Chicago....
