General Discussion / Re: Venue Certification/Registration?
« on: December 21, 2007, 11:56:16 AM »
Question #1 What is the difference between Certification and Registration of a Venue?

http://poetryslam.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13&Itemid=25

Question #2 Can I email my application for Venue Certification and then mail the money and evidence?

or do I have to send my application money and evidence by mail?

You apply for the venue certification online. You mail your evidence in separately.  In my opinion, it would be best advised to attach a copy of your invoice to your evidence when you do mail it in so that it will be easier to place a name to the evidence included.

I wanna see! I don't care what you just said! I wanna see!

I'd also check to see if there are any open mic nights on Thursday and Friday.

If there are, go to them and sign up.  Not only spit a poem (or two, depending on how many they let you do), but also talk to the organizer of the open mic and ask them to pub your show.

Then spit. Spit fire and pass out fliers. Talk to folks.  If you're going to be doing this on a more regular basis, you're going to have to get comfortable with marketing yourself to strangers; how else will you get fans and supporters?

If you do decide to talk to talk to English teachers, you should probably do that a few weeks out (getting in touch with them that is).  To do so at the last minute might not get you mentioned in classes.

Good luck!

1. I think it depends. Would this monster-poet.com site have access to NACA and University gigs as well or just slams?

2. Yeah, sure! I'd try anything once.

3. Depends on additional fees.

It would have access to any booking agents that used the service, not restricted. There would probably be a vetting process to weed out bs.

No additional fees for #3. It would be included in the cert fees. Perhaps additional functions could be extra, but I prefer free over not-free.

Word! I wasn't expecting clarification or expansion of explanation.  But thanks anyway!

Yup, yup and yup!

General Discussion / NEW SLAM BABY: Clementine McQueen Rakovan!!!
« on: November 15, 2007, 07:43:35 AM »
Good morning everyone!

I am pleased to announce that Clementine McQueen Rakovan was born sometime last night (so this could mean 11/14 or the we hours of 11/15 - WHAT!!??!!)!!

She punched out at 8 lbs, 10 oz and looks like a chubby-cheeked eskimo (per mom).

Mom and baby are doing stellar!

Congratulations to Rachel McKibbens and family!

General Discussion / Re: NPS - Prizes for Poets
« on: October 30, 2007, 03:53:02 PM »

Don't forget, folks. Two (or maybe three) years ago we made all Champs, individual and Team, members for life (that's only $15 a year but it lasts a long time) and if they have product in the store, the value of their membership jumps to $35 a year AND if they participate in the Poet Gallery, if and when we get that running again, that will be worth $100 a year. So, there has been a pretty good trend to increasing value of the prizes over the past few years.

Peace and Blessings_

The abillity to sell merch is already available but I was referring specifically to the poet gallery for the team or each individual poet which to my knowledge is not operating currently.

This response is not intended to counteract anything that Steve just said, but here's a link to the current poet gallery (accessible on the main menu of the site):

http://poetryslam.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=22&Itemid=49

This is a duplicate of the old poet gallery we had before updating the site (but it's still active).  As you can see, there are not new additions (ie. past champs) in there as of yet. But this is where they would go (if they had product available in our store to sell). But if you click on any of the artists listed, you'll see what can be listed for past champs and their product (links to the product in the store, bio, etc.).

The poet gallery (under the current format) would [ideally] include:

- PSi members who have purchased levels of "Sustainer" or higher (click here for a list of membership bennies)
- past champs w/ product in the online store (for example: if we had photo and bio info for Sonya Renee, we could put her in the poet gallery because she was a former NPS champ that currently has product in the store; same thing for Patricia Smith or Taylor Mali, who was a member of Team Providence that won in 96(?) - he's already in the gallery though, so bad example)

So once we have their product in hand, we can add that information to the site (if we stay w/ the current format or even in the future if we change the format).

Just a little bit of additional info (more than you probably needed, I'm sure).

Inkera and Amy, your suggestion for ability to sell merch in PSi store is already a package/option that's available. I just pulled this from the Prize money thread in the SM forum.

Now the value of basic membership has increased to $20. But the rest of it still applies.

I probably shouldn't admit this on such a public forum, but at a quick glance, I swear that #2 read "the whining team".

sorry! i'm tired!

I don't read often, but this is not only an attempt to read more...it's an attempt to get more people's work out there.

The awesomeness was when I left the stage last night, someone walked up to me and said they're going to do the same thing and that it was a GREAT idea.

Who knew I inspired stuff? Hmph!
