General Discussion / Ann Arbor in the News
« on: June 15, 2006, 10:07:08 AM »
All I have to ask is:

1.  What is up with you Ann Arborians?

2.  Steve...this is where you really were, wasn't  it?  There was no hospital...you were on lockdown!

Naked beau flushed from the bushes

Thursday, June 15, 2006; Posted: 7:53 a.m. EDT (11:53 GMT)

ANN ARBOR, Michigan (AP) -- A man who ran naked through his neighborhood to persuade his girlfriend to marry him got more than he bargained for when he was chased and shot at, police said.

The couple were discussing marriage early Wednesday when the woman said she wasn't sure if she was ready, according to Ann Arbor police reports.

The man responded that taking risks is an important part of life and, to prove his point, jumped out of a first-floor window and ran naked across the street.

Before he could return, he spotted a couple walking and hid in some bushes to avoid them. A 28-year-old man noticed the bushes rustling and bare feet underneath, then drew a .40-caliber handgun and ordered the naked man out, police said.

The naked suitor ran away, but the armed man gave chase and threatened to shoot, police said. The gunman fired a shot and the naked man fell to the ground, suffering minor injuries.

A resident called police, who arrested the gunman on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon. He was released following further investigation, police Sgt. Patrick Hughes told The Associated Press.

The naked man was not arrested and didn't want to pursue charges, Hughes said.

Gordon Parks Dead (swipe)

 http://sify.com/movies/hollywood/fullstory.php%3Fid%3D14157888

 Reuters |  Wednesday, 08 March , 2006, 10:47

Gordon Parks, the pioneering black photographer and filmmaker who
explored the African-American experience in his work, including
landmark movies "The Learning Tree" and "Shaft," died on Tuesday in
 New York, a relative said.

Parks, 93, had been in failing health, said the nephew, Charles
Parks, who lives in Lawrence, Kansas. Born in Fort Scott, Kansas,
Parks was orphaned by age 15 and grew up homeless. He worked a
variety of menial jobs before taking up photography in the late
1930s. He joined "Life" magazine in the late 1940s and became its
first black staff photographer, remaining with the publication
 until 1968.

He worked at several government jobs as a photographer and was a
correspondent for the U.S. Office of War Information during World
War Two. After the war, he served for a stint as a fashion
 photographer for Vogue magazine.

But it was at "Life" where he made his mark documenting the human
consequences of intolerance and crime. He was equally at ease with
gangsters as with cops, and he won the trust of the fiery Malcolm
X, the militant Black Panthers and ordinary black Americans who
lived in big cities and small, rural towns. His photo of a black
cleaning lady, standing in front of a huge American flag, mop in
one hand, broom in the other and a resigned look on her face,
became one of his best known shots.

"I suffered first as a child from discrimination, and poverty to a
certain extent, bigotry in my hometown in Kansas," Parks told
Reuters in a 2000 interview. "So I think it was a natural follow
from that that I should use my camera to speak for people who are
 unable to speak for themselves."

PHOTOS TO FILMS:He turned to filmmaking in the late 1960s, and in
1971 directed the hit movie "Shaft," one of the first of a wave of
"blaxploitation" films that directly targeted a black American
audiences and typically featured exaggerated sexuality, violence
 and funk or soul music.

"Shaft" starred Richard Roundtree as a police detective who was as
street tough as he was sexy with the ladies. It spawned a hit song,
"Theme from ''Shaft"'' by Isaac Hayes, and in 2000 was remade by
director John Singleton with Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role.

In 2000, when HBO aired a documentary on the photographer and
moviemaker, called "Half Past Autumn: The Life and Works of Gordon
Parks," he said the two films were hard to compare.

I've been thinking about this for a long time, so I wanted to know what others thought.

1. Do you think that we, as writers, have a responsibility to use ourselves as exemplary examples of how to use the English Language?

2. Do you think that it is important to use the proper spelling/grammar/word & applications regarding the rules of Standard English if one is to consider themselves an intelligible writer?

That'll show em!

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/10/19/store.rampage.ap/index.html

Tuesday, October 19, 2004 Posted: 9:33 AM EDT (1333 GMT)

FARGO, North Dakota (AP) -- A man who stripped to the waist, put on safety goggles and tore up a Verizon Wireless store after complaining of bad phone service has been sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Jason Perala, 22, pleaded guilty Monday to felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor assault in the rampage the company said cost it more than $20,000 in broken equipment and lost sales.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound former college wrestler said he had intended to only scream at the store workers, but when he tried to throw his cell phone against a wall, it hit a worker in the shoulder.

He continued to destroy merchandise for several minutes while workers locked themselves in an office.

The judge also sentenced Perala, of Fargo, to one year of supervised probation and $1,200 of restitution.

"I want to apologize; I'm sorry," Perala said after his sentencing. "I gotta change my ways a little bit."

Perala, who before the May incident had no criminal record, was arrested three more times during the summer on charges relating to disorderly conduct. He received fines, unsupervised probation and suspended jail sentences in those cases.

For those of you who knew Elle (web mistress for www.eliterarycafe.com  a site run out of Florida), Will Bell posted the announcement to the Southern Fried List Serv, that she was taken from us last night.

There is an article about this unfortunate incident online, but I'm unsure of the details.

Hey folks.

I know that last week was not what anyone really wants to describe in a good fashion.

I know a lot of us are probably (ok...not probably...but definitely) pissed to the upteenth level at the organizers of NPS as well as some, if not all of PSI, but I am calling for prayers regardless.

Daniel Brewster, one of the organizers for NPS 2004, has been very ill.  Even though he has been very ill, he's been burning the candle at both ends trying to be there for this tournament as well as other events he had going on simultaneously last week, which is why you didn't always see him at the tournament. He's done this against the advice of his doctors who have told him he needs to rest.  He tried to be everywhere he could, but didn't always succeed.  He has a slew of medical problems (physical health related) that have all hit him while trying to organize last week's event. He has been seeing new doctors, talking to lawyers in regard to misdiagnoses from previous doctors, as well as trying to get on with life as he knows it.  During the week of NPS (and possibly sooner), Daniel began experiencing numbness in different areas of his face and body. Because of the type of illness he already has, his doctors are concerned that it may be developing into another disease, but they are not certain.

I know that we are all still angry about the things that did not go successfully last week, and we could blame everyone and their mamma for the things that went wrong, but no one deserves to have as many medical burdens as Daniel has had to encounter recently.

So please, if you are a praying person ... or know praying people, please put him in your prayers.  We all need to support each other and if we truly are a "family" then now's the time to pull together to support one of our own.
