General Discussion / Double Features: What's the big deal?
« on: February 25, 2007, 10:12:47 AM »
So I was talking to some friends about features in the area and we were talking specifically about: double features.

I remember talking to a poet a long time ago about their upcoming feature in the area and we had double booked.  I wanted to know if they had wanted to reschedule or go with it and they were adamant about rescheduling.  Something was mentioned about competing for sales and all of that.

When I first came into slam in 98/99, the Myth Slam (Nicki, Toby and Sally) ALWAYS did double features (one local and one national), each getting about 15 minutes to perform and each getting paid about $25 a piece.  There was a harmony then.  Now, it seems like a mortal sin for poets to feature with anyone.

I would like to believe that if you're a poet worth your salt, then double/triple/quadruple feature be damned...you'd be able to sell yourself regardless of who shares the stage with you.  True, if you're featuring with someone (that wasn't originally touring with you), there is a possibility that your sales may go down. But what's the guarantee that the people that were listening to your feature were going to buy your product anyway?

Just wondering what your thoughts were on the issue.

General Discussion / 4 Luv of Poetry Seeks Female Voices
« on: September 29, 2006, 04:40:29 PM »
Howdy folks.

4 Luv of Poetry dot com is currently in the process of revamping its website.

One of the sections it plans to introduce in this rebirthing process is a running blog (or sorts) with 6 contributing writers.

We currently have solicited voices from 3 male writers and are now seeking their female counterparts.

So if you have already done any sort of Op-Ed writing, have a need to express yourself and can possibly commit to submitting an article one (maybe twice, depending on how popular the section becomes).

If you are interested, please send an email to webmaster at 4luvofpoetry dot com, enclose 1 writing sample (the writing sample is to not only get a feel of what you want to write about, but a feel of your writing style as well).

Thanks!

General Discussion / PSI Newsletter - Call for Articles and Ideas
« on: September 24, 2006, 10:40:07 AM »
Hey folks.

Back in July/August, the first issue of the 2nd volume of TEN: PSI Newsletter was released.

We are now looking for ideas, articles, photos, etc. for the 2nd issue.  We have not yet set a scheduled release for the new issue, but we're gearing up to get this sucker started very shortly.

If you have any ideas, post them here or send your ideas to psi.news@gmail.com.

I'm thinking we should do at least one slammaster spotlight and no idea what else to do there.  So get us some ideas so we can keep this thing going!

General Discussion / Standard English Rules & Grammar Online Source?
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:18:57 AM »
Greetings fellow wordsmiths,

I was wondering if there is anywhere online where I might find the equivalent of "The Little Brown Handbook"?

Anyone?

While I'd love to haul my copy around, I can't always do so (especially since I can't remember which box it is in at my mother's house).

Thanks!

General Discussion / Death Notice: Nikki Chipp (aka 3rd i)
« on: August 25, 2006, 04:57:51 PM »
Tishana Nikki Chipp (also known to some as 3rd i) took her life on between Sunday night/Monday sometime. She was living in Atlanta at the time. There may or may not have been an article in the paper (I've heard that there was, but have received no confirmation to the information).

I'm not sure how many of you would even know who she is.  But Nikki volunteered as a runner at the 2003 National Poetry Slam while she was living in Chicago.  She was a frequent poster on Okayplayer.com (home of The Roots) in both their Freestyle/Poetry Forum and their General Discussion forum. She was not what one would consider a slam poet, but she was a poet, nonetheless.  She was a wonderful writer, human being, one of the nicest people you'd ever have the luxury of meeting and someone who left us too soon. She was young, vibrant, a beautiful spirit and she was my friend. And I didn't know she was in a bad way. And there's nothing I can do to help her now.

I'm not asking anyone to say a prayer for her (if you do, that is your perogative).  I am however, imploring you to please reach out and speak up if you are battling depression or entertaining thoughts of suicide.  It's not the answer.  Seek the help that can save your life.

General Discussion / Dear fellow typesetters and comp geeks
« on: August 19, 2006, 08:51:17 AM »
I was wondering...

According to some sites, PCs can only handle 1,000 fonts at a time.  Any more and it may slow down the performance of your computer. Is this true?

If it is, would it make sense to keep all fonts stored on a flash drive?

I would think yes, because it now makes your font portable to whatever computer you're working on, but then the question becomes...how does one access the flash drive for your fonts?

And can fonts be uninstalled once they've been installed?

Just wondering because I got a whole rack of new ones and I don't want to unnecessarily slow down my computer as I experiment with them.

Thanks.

General Discussion / PSI Newsletter - Call for ... EVERYTHING
« on: August 12, 2006, 01:30:29 PM »
Greetings, family.  I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but as a member of PSI, you get a PSI newsletter that tells you different things going on within our slam world.

This is a free service that relies on its members for contributions.  What that means is we need volunteers.

We're looking for articles, ideas on ways to improve the newsletter, suggestions for new articles/stories/angles etc.

So let us know!

Respond in this thread or email psi.news@gmail.com to let us know what you think we should do for future issues.

Thanks!

General Discussion / Slam Poet Makes Cameo on MTV
« on: July 15, 2006, 07:41:08 AM »
So I'm sitting here this morning just letting the TV run while I do some work on my computer, and I'm watching this new show called, "Why Can't I Be You?".

This episode: a tomboy (EXTREME TOMBOY - named Stephanie) has solicited the assistance of the girlie girl (named Holly, I think)that works at her dentist's office to help her become more feminine.  This particualar scene shows them at a diner eating and Holly requests that Stephanie allows her to put a little bit of lipgloss on her.  Stephanie agrees to let her, so right at the table, she puts some lipgloss on her and then tells her to go up to this guy at the diner counter and ask him if he thinks her lip gloss looks cute.

Stephanie is NOT feeling this idea.  She tells Holly that you don't just walk up to some random person to ask them that.  To prove her point, Holly gets up and walks to the booth behind them.  She sits down at this booth where two men are sitting and asks them if they think her new lip bloss is pretty and the African-American gentleman at the table tells her yes.

So I'm looking at this whole exchange and thinking, "hey...I KNOW that guy!"  So I immediately start rolling through my brain who this dude could possibly be, and it hits me that it's ANDREW TYREE from team Nuyorican 2005.

So be it unintentional or no, a slam poet recently made a cameo on MTV (uneventful ending to the story, I know...but hey maybe he will (or some other slam poet) have an opportunity to be seen somewhere else on National TV).
