Yes from a previous post from Shannon's mom, it was indicated that even though Shannon had health insurance there was a large amount of bills left over.

General Discussion / Re: Travel advice for NPS 2008?
« on: May 04, 2008, 06:32:35 PM »
Peace and Blessings_

Travel arrangements for everyone will vary depending on their role at NPS and their finances. The actual competition starts on Tuesday, 5 August. If you are volunteering, make sure you go to www.nps2008.com and sign up. There is normally a volunteer sign-in/meeting, though I'm unsure of the dates and time.

Here is a tentative schedule for Sunday and Monday.

Sunday, August 3, 2008 (This event is in Milwaukee)
7-Midnight   Milwaukee PreGame Challenge
Since “MIPS” couldn’t be nearly as cool as what Dallas pulled off in ’06 and ’07, we’re taking a different approach to get our sister city involved.  This will be a version of Milwaukee’s “Last Poet Standing” tradition.  Individual poets are randomly assembled into three teams.  A poet from each team is called to spit 60-second of their work and the audience “votes off” one poet at a time, until one poet remains.  That poet will win $1000, and everyone on their team will win $100.  In addition, each team will represent a local charity group (Wisconsin Coalition on Domestic Abuse, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin & Wisconsin Literacy).  The Last Poet’s charity will receive a donation of $1,000, and the other two charities will receive $500.  We will provide a shuttle from Milwaukee to Madison on Monday morning. Milwaukee hotel will be approx. $85.

Monday, August 4, 2008
9a - 5   Registration
2 – 3 pm       NPS Orientation
3:30–5:30 pm      Film Screenings
8-10 pm   Kickoff Event:  Battle of the Poetry Rockstars
This will likely change, since it’s too similar to the newly-minted annual event, The Decathlon
10 – Until   KickOff Party

Hopefully this information will assist you in making your decision about when to arrive in Madison.

Until we meet (again)_

I hope each of you reading this is getting ready for the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Detroit Mi. This is an event not to miss!!!

I will be arriving at DTW at 12:11 PM on Wednesday, 12 March. The cheapest cab ride from the airport to the hotel is roughly $41.

General Discussion / Re: NPS - Prizes for Poets
« on: October 30, 2007, 11:31:46 AM »

Don't forget, folks. Two (or maybe three) years ago we made all Champs, individual and Team, members for life (that's only $15 a year but it lasts a long time) and if they have product in the store, the value of their membership jumps to $35 a year AND if they participate in the Poet Gallery, if and when we get that running again, that will be worth $100 a year. So, there has been a pretty good trend to increasing value of the prizes over the past few years.

The abillity to sell merch is already available but I was referring specifically to the poet gallery for the team or each individual poet which to my knowledge is not operating currently.

My thoughts for prize packages:

1. Mini-tour
2. paid entry into the next NPS
3. front page press release with team photo on website
4. press release sent to local newspaper for winning team
5. paid hotel stay at next NPS
6. reduced airfare or travel cost
7. cd or book deal for team
8. ability to sell merch in PSI store with page for team or individuals (whichever is easier and more cost effective)

While I don't agree with the email and the way the request to feature was handled. I have to defend Kim and Wits End Poetry. Kim has been my mentor for 4 years and has helped SlamCharlotte and I get through some dfficult times.
Her work and efforts above and beyond anything I could have imagined isn't the action of a racist. Now could the statement be seen as racist, yes.

In light of the information shared by Karen, I can almost see why the comment was made. That doesn't mean I agree with the way the situation was handled.

We've all done things that are no where near being right. The thing to remember is that we often reap what we sow.
(No offense against you Alvin.) I honestly can't wait for you and Katie to feature in Charlotte.

I can't speak to why Kim hasn't responded to your email. She was been the main reason why I have no problem openingly communicating. That has always been one of the main things she has taught me.

I hope you and Kim will be able to work this situation out. I understand your need to seek advice from the "family" and there is nothing wrong with that but Kim is the only one who can shed true light on this situation.
