Do I tell people your real name Ed Mabrey?  Haaaa!  I see it so differently than "A Last Poet Standing" event in that teams are submitting a poet to represent them/and their geographic location, there are no judges, there is no second place and until near "showtime", location and time of the event is unknown until sent via text message.  "Stacking the crowd", that's possible anywhere and in any Slam.  But the sheer energy, expectation, skill, artistry and respect of the event itself will dictate the will of the people. Competing poets can use whatever original poems of their own they wish to use, regardless if "said" poems were spoken in an earlier bout or to be used in a later bout.  And as for props, no gimmicks baby.  This is so what we as poets whom compete love and embrace.  No second and third place. Ed, I've known you for a while partner, you know I got this and you know it will be incredible.  And also, as long as I've known you, you only ask questions about things for three reasons; you're interested, got a plan or scared.  And you already said you were interested, you always have a plan and........ You should only fear yourself baby, not the competition ;D  I gotta bounce.  Haaaaa!

NUPIC 2009! I dare you to be compete!

Its already shaping up to be a memorable royale event that we've come to love for an Indi's event!

As some of you have begun to do, here is the process for registering a poet from your team/city:

1. email me at harlym125@aol.com the following information
a. poet's name (pen or government is permissible)
b. team the poet is from
c. city the team represents
d. a number to text the location and time of NUPIC

for example: harlym 125, from team Mars, representing Milky Way, Space and (123) 456-7890

The $125 will be collected Thursday, August 06 the night before NUPIC

Teams wanting to send a poet, I suggest emailing the necessary info quickly, as the list of competing poets is growing.
And if you are a volunteer for this years Nationals and wish to compete, please email me.

its a thought being considered................

not in any official or authorized capacity.  its underground baby.

But its a reachable goal by August.  And again, all the money goes to the winning poet.   If a team decides to enter a poet, $125 is a sizable, but manageable amount of money to raise in a month and a half, either by the team or an individual.

Understood. we shared in that error.

There is an additional "measure" that will afford it to work, but I'm not quite sure I want to enlist it, therefore in my reserve are the options of either 18 or 36.  Thank you.  This will be infectiously remarkable.

The date of this event will be Friday, August 7, and at a time after Semi's and Group Piece Finals.  As long as this happens, the PSI President has accepted the invitation as noted in his reply.  Thank you Mr. President.

Unless our community suggest otherwise, this will be incredible.  Understand this event is not sanctioned by PSI, or in contest with PSI, but is open to PSI Members Only.

The night for this competition will be Thursday, August 6, after semifinal competition. The location and time of this competition will be undisclosed until the night of the event. Text messages identifying the time and location will be sent to a contact person for each team entering a poet to compete . The alternative to a text message will be direct contact from me, and word of mouth. If your team plans to enter a poet into the competition please email or contact me.  There will only be 25 spots.  I will accept entries up to the night of August 6 or until the entrant capacity is full, whichever is first.  In the event of a full list there will be a waiting list.  This is unlike slam as many of you have known it and I dare you to fall in love with it.  I am the maestro for this and depend on my hopefully honorable reputation amongst you all to make this happen.....

Here are the rules to the
National Underground Poetry Individual Competition
(NUPIC)

1. Any 2009 registered PSI team can send a poet of their choice from their team to compete.
2. Each team has to "put up" $125 for their poet to enter the competition (all collected money goes to the winning poet)
3. Head to head slams (one loss and you're out) until a winner is pronounced
4. No Judges, just the crowd in attendance making the "call" based on applause, etc.
5. Winner take all (3 minute time limit enforced). There is no second or third place.
*. I'm the host

For the people thinking they are the "shit", put your money where your mouth is; while all other nominated entrants have fun, your team at the least believes in you.  Its June 17 and you/each team has until August 6 to get your money "right", unless the list fills, in which case you run the risk of being on the waiting list.  Being on the waiting list means in the event a spot opens up, entrants will be selected from the list compiled in numerical order by order of entry onto the list. Also, the "pot" has the potential to be substantial. With 25 entrants, the "spoils" would be $3,125.00.  Every penny collected goes to the winning poet. No one is paying me, nor am I taking a percentage.  To further the point I have no hidden agenda, but I simply missed the energy of the Indy's Competition at Nationals and wanted to bring it back with a twist.

*There is only one entrant with a pass into this competition and that is the President of PSI. And this honor is out of respect for the Presidency and the "honor" of Slam, as our President is the face and representative of the values of Slam. I imagine this event to be annual and this invitation will always be extended to the PSI President.

No cameras. Just cell phones and you tube possibilities.  This could be the start of a something great...............
