TEAM POETRY SLAM!
Albuquerque's ABQ Slams, El Paso's Free Hole Slam, Amarillo's Slamarillo and Silver City's Poetry Bread square off in a Team Poetry Slam competition that will determine the fate of the world.

This is a Win and You're In Slam for all teams involved. If you are a slamaster in the area and need a W&YI, contact me backchannel at silversam AT gmail DOT com and we can talk about if there is room to split the field up into two bouts. If we get a couple or more teams, we'll just run two W&YI's that night.

our FB event is here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=103302813079832

Slam Selection Processes / Re: Silver City Slam Selection Process

Silver City Slam 2010 Slam Team Selection Process -

Pretty much the same as in the past -

SCS holds open slams from August (after NPS) until May.
Points are awarded as follows:
1 point - host
1 point - sacrifice/sorbet
1 point - slamming in the first round.

you can also receive a one time bonus point for one of the following:
keeping score, keeping time, UMP at a bout, W&YI participation, assisting in a Youth Slam event.

you may only receive one bonus point - if you keep score one night, then keep time the next slam, you still only earn one bonus point

you may not receive more than one point for any one event - for example, you can sacrifice and keep score at the same slam, but you can only earn one point for the night.

In order to earn your Slamming in the first round point, you must stay until the end of the round and be present at the cut. If you advance to the next round, you must complete that round to claim your point. If you advance to the third round, you must also complete that round in order to claim your point. In other words, you have to commit to the slam until you are cut. If you walk out or leave for some reason, you loose your point. 1st 2nd and 3rd place do not earn any extra points - just bragging rights.

To qualify for the Grand Slam - Top Eight point earners from the season qualify for the Grand Slam. There is a 2 point minimum. You cannot earn more than one point at any single event so all qualifiers must have participated in at least two events.

  • Grand Slam is three rounds, cumulative score for all three rounds.
  • Winner of the Grand Slam is our City Champ and IWPS rep
  • Top Four NPS eligible poets will make the NPS Team.
  • Team Members must sign a Team Contract within 3 days of earning their spot on the team.
  • The NPS team can, by consensus vote, add the fifth placed eligible poet to the team.
  • Openings on the team roll down to the next eligible finisher in the Grand Slam.
  • If an opening occurs on a 5 member team, the team can elect not to replace the fifth member.(consensus vote)

Silver City is indeed the closest. 2 1/2 hours isn't bad if he really wants to slam with us. I drive 4 hours to ABQ when i go slam there. Slams are held every last Saturday.
This Saturday Jan 31st, Hakim Bellamy of ABQ Slams is featuring (2005 NPS Nat'l Champ)
Saturday, February 28th, Danny Sherrard features (2007 iWPS champ)
Saturday, March 28th, Mike McGee features (NPS & iWPS champ - sorry mike, i can't remember the years off the top of my head).

your buddy can call me at 575 313 2599 to get info
OR visit www.silvercityslam.com
OR email me " sam AT silvercityslam DOT com "

There is untapped potential for a slam in Las Cruces (college town and all) so if he really wants a closer slam, i would focus some effort there. I am sure ABQ Slams and Silver City Slam would support in any way we can.

Silver City NPS 2009 Team Qualification process:

Earn points by competing or participating in one of SCS' qualified slams during the 2009 season (see www.silvercityslam.com for a schedule).

You can earn points in the following ways -
1st place = 4 points
2nd place = 3 points
3rd place = 2 points
all others = 1 point
hosting = 1 point
sacrifice = 1 point

we are removing the following requirements for this year's slam selection process -

IMPORTANT - merely earning points does not make you eligible for the Team Competition. You must CLAIM your points by creating a USER Account on this website before the end of the Slam Season (usually December/January).

ADDITIONALLY - if you wish to claim your points, you must complete one of the following tasks at a slam:
- keep score
- keep time
- sit through an ENTIRE slam from start to finish without competing.

In all cases, you must check in with the host to BEFORE the Slam begins so they know you are there to claim your points. Hosts are exempted from this rule since, well, they kind of HAVE to be there, and its pretty obvious if they are not.

In February, we will hold a slam off with the top scoring poets to select the team. Currently the top 8 scoring poets who also claim their points by creating a user account and participating in their "additional task" will be invited to compete.
The top four scoring poets from the slam-off will comprise the team for 2009.

Haiku Death Match Champion was non other than Mr. Ed Mabrey!
I gotta give a shout-out to Silver City's own Damien Davies for coming in second to the Champ! No shame when you loose to Ed Mabrey, and plenty to be proud of as Damien pulled out from the losers bracket and had to claw his way to the final Head to Head!
and 3 teams were ejected from the host hotel @ 4am on Saturday due to excessive frevolity.
Again, way to go Team Silver City!

General Discussion / New Mexico Poet needs your clicks...
« on: June 27, 2008, 01:13:55 PM »
Hey all,

please read the info below and consider taking three minutes to click on the link and listen to the piece by Zach Kluckman, an Albuquerque based poet. Zach is really talented and is one of those poets who genuinely listens to and cares for other poets work. He promotes all sorts of other folks and is a part of select few Albuquerque poets who made the 4 hour drive to our venue many times this year help jump start our inaugural season. Plus, its a great piece. thanks...

Ok,

I hope you will forgive me for being overly enthusiastic, but I just got TREMENDOUS news and really wanted to share it with you all as people I respect....and ask a small favor.

Clear Channel Entertainment (who operate a ton of radio stations nationwide) have posted my poem 'Rain in the Desert' to their NEW! program, which basically means that over 10 million people a month now have access to my poem by tapping into any of over 500 radio station websites around the country!!!!!!

This kind of exposure is huge for me, and a true blessing. My hope is to make this poem a 'hit' and get it featured on a special page they have created for the most listened to tracks, because this would be a huge personal milestone and also because I really want to see poetry become something radio stations will actually pay attention to as a vital for of expression and musicality, so...

if you would please be so kind as to take three minutes and listen to my poem, and maybe pass the link on to others who love poetryt and spoken word...it would be a huge blessing and mean a ton to me. You can click on the link below to hear it and access the page.

Please excuse the self-promotion but this is such a thrill I really do want to share it with you and I want you to know I appreciate your help and support by listening to the poem!

Have an amazing day!

Zach

General Discussion / Re: Boston style slam
« on: May 08, 2008, 12:07:02 AM »
not sure exactly what a Boston style slam would be, but i went to an iWPS slam in ABQ that confused the hell out of me. here is what i think we did:
round one was for "rank"
round two was Head to Head single elimination #1vs#8, #2vs#7, #3vs#6 & #4vs#5
round thee was the "winners" of round two
i don't even know what happened in round four, but i sure cheered for Tony and Damien!

so, i guess you could do something like that with just the three rounds. Of course if you just want to have three rounds, you could do two rounds of cumulative, drop however many you want for round three and reset everyone's scores. Or just cut 8 to 6 to 4. We've done both at our slams, and both worked out pretty well.

Slam Selection Processes / Re: Silver City Slam Selection Process

Thanks for getting this up, D.

Just a couple of additions/clarifications,

SCS held 12 open slams this season. They were pretty much every other Saturday, but we did make a few exceptions in the case of holiday interruptions or the availability of a feature poet. Calendar was posted and available on our website from the third slam onward.

SCS also has a website www.silvercityslam.com where rules, eligibility, calendar, and poet scores are kept current.

There is a no-repeat rule in effect for Semi-Finals and Finals.

Semi-Finals is two rounds with cumulative score kept. Top 8 (not 7) poets advanced to Finals.
Score resets to zero for Finals.
Finals is three rounds, cumulative score kept.

i think that covers it. email me at sam at silvercityslam dot com if there are questions or concerns.
