General Discussion / Re: NPS 2012 competing teams
« on: July 25, 2012, 07:45:12 PM »
The PSI rule is clear.  But I've seen under 21's competing in recent Nationals.

So the exception to that rule is the Host City can explicitly decide otherwise. Now my question is: IS THE CHARLOTTE HOST CITY COMMITTEE  NOT ALLOWING UNDER 21???
Speaking to the question of under 21 (but still at least 18), Charlotte did recently affirm that they would allow 18+ to compete. I can't find a formal announcement, but I know that it came up and there was discussion and ultimately it was decided that 18 - 20 year olds would be able to participate.

I hear you on the reading of the By-laws, but that being acknowledged, I think there is plenty of history and collective agreement that under 18's have never been allowed to compete at PSi events.

General Discussion / Re: Two Further Questions for All EC Candidates
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:08:47 PM »
Sean, sorry this has taken me so long to respond to.
1) The following is the second of five amended articles of incorporation for PSI as listed on the website:
"To enhance the perception of literary merit and legitimacy of performance poetry as an art form."
What the above mean to you?  Do you believe that  we are currently successful in the enhancement of perceived literary merit and legitimacy of performance poetry?  If not, what do you, as a member of the EC, hope to do in order to further this process?  Or, for incumbents, what do you see as roadblocks to achieving further literary merit for our art form?  Can you propose a way to circumvent these roadblocks within your next term?

This means that we need to find ways to move beyond the competitive aspects of slam, or find ways in which the competition can be put to better use. The major roadblock I see is that people don't want to change the competition or they want to change it for reasons that do nothing to advance the art. I am in favor of the proposal you put for in another thread to generate awards and recognition for poems outside the scoring system. I believe we should be actively looking for ideas like that to promote poets taking chances on stage. It hearkens back to the indies competition where a team might not advance, but a standout poet (from a scoring perspective) could still be showcased. I like that. I would like to hear other ideas that the community has and try those as well. Most of all, I would like for poets to become excited not only to compete, but also to share and grow. As an EC member all I can offer is to be an advocate of these ideas and to do my best to push the EC and other SM's to adopt them.

2) There has been a lot of talk regarding the possibility of PSI events being held within a limited number of host cities.  How do you feel about this idea?  Are your for or against it?  Explain your position.

I am for grounding. Most of all, I would like to see NPS grounded.

Here is the breakdown of why I think grounding is good:
1) Very few cities can actually handle a NPS. Access to audience, venues, transportation and hotels. We ask much of a NPS Host City. The list that can do it is short. The number that want to do it is even shorter.
2) Events get better each year they are in the same city. Ask almost any Host City. Venues that were on the fence to host a prelim suddenly can't wait to have you back. Rental Fees go down or disappear. Sponsors finally "get it". All sorts of things are easier once you've done it once.
3) It becomes something the city takes ownership in. Audiences become trained to expect it. Advertisers and Tourism Boards get behind it. The locals take pride that something this special happens in their home every year.
4) The ability to plan ahead and improve things that need improving. Nobody is perfect and mistakes happen. Grounding gives you the ability to make corrections and learn what works (or what doesn't).

I am OK with iWPS and WoWPS continuing to rotate as some have suggested. But again, even with theses events, I think moving them every two years (or less) is detrimental.

So, what I would like to put before the EC and SM's this coming year is something along the lines of this:

Let's develop a new bidding process for all three events that allows a potential Host City to build a sustained relationship with PSi and the Event. I would like to see us encourage bids that would have iWPS and WoWPS for a three year cycle with the option to "renew" for one additional year if conditions are met (perhaps profitability, SM satisfaction, or some other criteria). For NPS, I would go further and say that this should be a five year agreement with a two year renewal.

The starting agreements could be staggered and even if this went into effect today (assuming details were worked out), there would be some natural staggering as agreements for events went into effect.

The basic idea is that events could still rotate, but not annually. We would make an effort to develop a long term relationship between NPS and a Home City (not Host City) that would be mutually beneficial to both the City and PSi. We could work on building staff that know not only the event, but also the location. And in no case would any of this be without strong checks and balances to make sure PSi and the Events were being supported. That is to say, grounding doesn't mean NPS (or another event) will be in one city no matter what for the next five to seven years; It means that we want it to be in this city and the city wants it to be there as well. We want to be able to plan, to learn, and to improve the Event.

General Discussion / Re: Questions for all EC Candidates
« on: February 24, 2012, 12:56:27 PM »
1. "The mission of Poetry Slam Incorporated (PSI) is to promote the performance and creation of poetry while cultivating literary activities and spoken word events in order to build audience participation, stimulate creativity, awaken minds, foster education, inspire mentoring, encourage artistic statement and engage communities worldwide in the revelry of language."

How do you plan to help this organization grow and accomplish this mission?  Please be specific.

The first thing we need to do is focus on where we are. What are PSI’s strengths and weaknesses. I would like to get the new EC to agree to participate in an Organizational Assessment Tool that we use at my work (we do organizational development and capacity building) that is very helpful in determining organizational gaps. The Assessment Tool is a series of questions where the Board (in our case EC) gives itself a score on a series of questions about Leadership Development, Organizational Development, Program Development and Community Development. The great thing is not only do you emerge with a picture of the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, you also have specific areas to focus on and benchmarks you can return to in order to track progress.

In addition, I would continue the work we’ve already begun in the development and operation of a Finance Committee. EC members need to be well trained in understanding the financial operations of PSI and that they are exercising their fiduciary duties as Trustees to provide sound financial oversight. This includes reading Financial Statements, monitoring budgets and setting up appropriate processes for host cities and PSI staff to get their daily work done.

I would also like to have the EC go through formal training in non-profit board governance. There is no single “right way” to be a board, but there are some great models out there and it would be helpful for us to look at how we operate and compare ourselves to others.  At a minimum, basic board training can be a reminder to veteran board members and a great introduction to new members.
Volunteer development is something that is mentioned by many members on the Forum and is also something I would like to see improved. My basic approach is that every position in the organization (including EC members) needs a Job Description. Volunteer is just a rate of pay. We need to define all of the jobs that need to be done, identify the ones we have financial resources to fund and then make a call for volunteers for the others. We should treat volunteers just like staff, with high expectations and clear jobs to accomplish.

I would like PSi to further refine its Policies & Procedures and Operations Manuals. We do have some of these things in place, but they need improvement and they are not comprehensive. The current EC has done a great deal of work in drafting these. I would like to see the next step taken in having the EC really review and contribute constructive revisions. This is a continual process.

I would like to see our National Events “grounded” in one city (not all the same city, of course. I would also like to see PSI revisit and develop events and activities dedicated to the craft of performance poetry. Both of these ideas have been raised in the past and the current EC has been discussing them (just discussion). I think one of the first ways to accomplish this is to revise the bidding format to include and encourage multi-year submissions.

2. What experience do you have with non-profit organizations - as an employee, as a volunteer, as a board member?  I am especially interested in hearing about experience working with non-profit ARTS organizations, but I do think that all of your professional experience is relevant.

I have worked for non-profits for almost ten years. I have served on several non-profit and co-op boards. Most recently, I have served as the Executive Director of The Wellness Coalition (www.wellnesscoalition.org) where we engage in Youth Development and Capacity Building. Capacity Building is a critical field in non-profit work. The Capacity Building that The Wellness Coalition (TWC) performs across the state of New Mexico is focused on helping non-profits survive in an era of decreased funding and increased need. We engage in trainings and technical assistance with organizations to help them address their ability (or lack thereof) to deliver services. This can be the development of fundraising plans, it can be strategic planning sessions, it can be board training in governance, it all depends on the need identified by the assessment we apply. Non-Profits are the fabric of our democratic society and provide economic impact while supporting and enriching our lives. For my own part, in addition to my duties as an ED, I also lead trainings and develop new programming for not only our Non-Profit Resource Center but also our Youth Development programs.

3. How many hours a week do you have available to dedicate to PSI?  And what is your typical availability (days/evenings/weekends)?

I have been serving 5 to 10 hours a week as an EC member with extra time being put in lately as the Interim FM. I am typically available in the evenings on weekdays, although I have been known to take a little break from my day job to hop on the forums and read up on new posts. Weekends have been my extra time to finish any FM duties. They are available, but the EC has a standing policy of “being closed” on weekends. Still I usually do some PSI work on weekends and would continue to do so.

4.  What would you most like to see changed about PSI?  What would you most like to see preserved?

I would like see our Events grounded. There are many benefits to placing an event in the same city year after year. We do ourselves, the Host City and the audiences a disservice by picking up stakes and moving each year.

I would like to preserve the excitement and electricity of the side events. There is so much incredible art and poetry that occurs outside of the competition, I think we need to make sure we take good care to ensure it is always there.

5. Do you believe that the concept of legacy is important to PSi? If not, why not? If so, how would you see that manifested?

Absolutely. And you manifest it by asking. You ask the folks who have been doing this thing for many years what it would take to get them interested in being a bigger part of PSi (again). Is it the ability to teach a workshop? To lead a showcase or night event? There is a natural component in the life cycle of a non-profit to have its founders fade into the background or even leave the fold entirely. But we lose great leaders and great passion and context of the original mission. We need to be innovative and strike out into new waters, but we also need to listen to people who have navigated them before. So ask. And listen.

In recent years, concerns have been raised about the safety of the female members of our community while attending (and traveling to/from) events. What actions have you taken (or policies have you enacted) at your home venue to address these issues? What actions do you plan to take/ suggest on the national level to address this growing concern?

One of the things I love about our small town is how much we all look out for each other here. We have a safe stage and while everyone sometimes knows each others’ business a little too much, we also all look after each other. Thankfully, we haven’t had to institute any formal policies. The folks who run Poetry Bread as a “Slam Council” are all people who I know have a high degree of understanding of why every member of our community needs to be treated with respect and safety.

I’ll admit I’m a little ignorant of the concerns you mention other than I know the release of poets’ names has been a concern and that safety was one of the main reasons cited for why PSi would not release a “NPS scouting report”. I support the position that I have seen the EC take thusfar of not releasing team  member names for NPS. For iWPS and WoWps, I understand the need to release competitor lists by PSi since they are individual competitions. I am open to hearing suggestions for what policy or practices need to be changed. Clear, easy to follow guidelines for poets and PSi always have my support, especially if safety is involved.

Have you previously volunteered for PSI? If yes, in what capacity? If no, why not? If you are not elected to the EC, (how) will you continue to work for the ideas/ platform you are running on? Be specific. It would be more telling if you described actions you'd be willing to take as non-EC members than philosophies.

I have not volunteered at any National PSI events. If you count the four years of volunteering as a local slammaster, then there is that to consider. I also have volunteered most recently as an EC member, of course. And I have tried to be active on the Forums, even prior to serving on the EC.

Since most of my ideas have to do with working to develop internal process and oversight on the EC itself, I would need to hear from the new EC if they wanted to allow me to engage on any of the projects I proposed above. I will certainly volunteer even if not elected to the EC, to help refine the Policies and Procedures documents and Operations Manuals. I would like to see the concept of Event grounding explored regardless of if I am elected to the EC or not and will certainly advocate for it on the Forums.

Sam, is there already a financial committee within the EC or is there a broader one I'm not remembering/or in development?
Karen, I am not aware of a Finance Committee that was in existence prior to my joining in October. It was one of the first things I pushed for and I am happy to report there was great support and we now have a formal  Finance Committee that is made up of the President, the Treasurer, the Executive Director, the Finance Manager and one additional Trustee. Those are not person driven, so if the EC elects a new Treasurer or President, that person would also sit on the Finance Committee.
The Finance Committee has its own section in the Forums. There are duties associated with the Finance Committee such as monthly review of the Profit and Loss Statement and Balance Sheet for PSI for both the month prior and the Year to Date.
The Finance Committee has not expanded beyond sitting EC members, but that is a decision that a future EC could change.

Can you please expand on what changes you envision the organization undergoing in the near future? Can you please list them in order of priority?
As a member of the current EC, with access to more information about PSI's inner-working than other candidates, I'm sure you have plenty of original ideas on how the governing body should proceed.
I’m not sure that these fall in a strict rank order, but if I had to put together a list:
Priority One would be to continue the work we’ve already begun in the development and operation of a Finance Committee. I would like to make sure that EC members are well trained in understanding the financial operations of PSI and that they are exercising their fiduciary duties as Trustees to provide sound financial oversight.
Priority Two is the development of some training for EC members so that we are all on the same page with respect to roles and responsibilities. There are many ways in which a Governing Board can operate and in light of the fact that we will almost certainly have a large number of new EC members, I would like to see the group take some time, in a very intentional way, to engage in some training around how to be an effective EC.
Priority Three is to develop ways to increase member participation in the operation and development of PSI. Volunteers already run a Newsletter and are an integral part of putting on Events. I would like to see us work more quickly to find ways to empower members to contribute even more.
Priority Four is the refinement of PSI’s Policies & Procedures and Operations Manuals. We do have some of these things in place, but they need improvement and they are not comprehensive. The current EC has done a great deal of work in drafting these. I would like to see the next step taken in having the EC really review and contribute constructive revisions. This is a continual process.
Priority Five is to engage as an EC, with input from membership, in a Strategic Planning process. PSI is turning 15 years old this year. The organization has done incredible things and will certainly continue to achieve great things. I would like for there to be a collective vision of what that will look like. I would like to see our National Events “grounded” in one city (not all the same city, of course) as a part of a Strategic Plan to increase PSI’s reach and draw more people into poetry. I would also like to see PSI revisit and develop events and activities dedicated to the craft of performance poetry. Both of these ideas have been kicked around in the past, I would like to see some new life and energy breathed into their consideration.

Quote
You mention that "you try not to take [slamming] too seriously." So why do you want to be part of the national leadership?
What I mean when I say that I slam, but I don’t take it too seriously is that I prefer the craft over the competition. Some folks prefer the game.
I never hate a player, though.  :-*

PSi Experience
I have been a member of PSi and co-founder of Silver City Poetry Bread since 2007. I have been on the EC since late October of last year, when I was invited to fill a vacancy. Since then, I have participated in the creation of a Finance Committee and with the departure of our last Finance Manager, I have stepped in as Interim FM until PSi can hire a new FM.

I do write and perform. I enjoy slamming, but I try not to take it too seriously. It has been a struggle at times to organize and keep alive a Slam and reading series in a town our size, but every time I think this is the last show, someone goes and makes me cry with their words or a new poet takes the stage and the audience showers them with love, or we get an out of town feature roll through that brings the house down and I realize that it is all worth it.

We host about a dozen events each year; all of our features do a workshop for youth the day after or day before the slam.

Work Experience
At my day job, I am the Executive Director of The Wellness Coalition (www.wellnesscoalition.org), a non-profit that develops and supports the vitality of the people of southwest New Mexico and the community organizations that serve them.

The Wellness Coalition (TWC) operates in two main areas: Youth Development and Organizational Development. In the field of Youth Development we are the second largest AmeriCorps program in the State of New Mexico, placing corpsmembers in Forestry Crews, Health Care Centers, Domestic Violence Shelters, Schools and Early Childhood Centers. We catalyze community change by providing people and organizations the opportunities to be a part of the National Service movement. In the field of Organizational Development, we host trainings, provide technical assistance and facilitate peer networks for non-profits in our area and across New Mexico. We hold group trainings on Board Development, Financial Management, Fundraising, Strategic Planning and other topics. I conduct trainings on Positive Youth Development, Information Systems and other technology.

I have worked at TWC for 8 years, serving as the ED for the last 4. My previous employment includes 3 years in the cycling and outdoor recreation industry and 5 years in the natural foods industry at Wheatsville Co-op in Austin, TX.

Sam Castello Experience
I live in a town of about 10,000 people. The closet major town to the north is two hours away and has 500 people living there. An hour to the southwest is Lordsburg (population 2000), and to the southeast is Deming (population 12,000). You have to drive two hours to get to a bookstore and three hours to get to an airport. The upside is that my backyard is 3.5 million acres of wilderness and my small town has an incredible coffee shop, farmers market, co-op and zero traffic. I grew up in Houston, so I know all about the big city and I don’t miss it except for the occasional 3am craving for Pho that must go unfulfilled. I appreciate knowing my neighbors, walking to work, and getting excited when the new phonebooks arrive.

I am a DJ and comic-book nerd. I like Linux, but I run windows. I grew up on Lord British and Steve Jackson Games. Kirk is my hero, but Picard is my role model. I am married and the proud father to two boys who just turned 7 and 5.

I welcome any questions you have for me. I hope to continue my current service on the EC. I plan to be in Denver for WOWps and would love to talk in person or here on the Forums.

I have only dabbled with Drupal, and i don't know the set up for my.poetryslam.com well enough to know how easy it would be to add this mod, but it looks promising.
