Slam Selection Processes / Re: NYC - Nuyorican
« on: February 15, 2012, 02:32:48 PM »
its basically, if you win a friday - you are in a semi. if you lose the semi, you still get a spot in the runoffs. the team is formed over the course of a month of fridays: grand slam, followed by the runoffs.

I kept reading this and having things to input/add only to see other folks continually take the words out of my mouth. I like your vision for this Syd. I agree, the forums are cluttered and difficult to search/navigate. I agree that it would be most efficient to the goal of this project if postings could not turn into live, public conversations. the craigslist model seems wisest to me. you post what you want/need. someone can hit you backchannel. while i think it would be idea to get this OFF the forums eventually, a place to start might be right here. Is there a way to disable threads at a certain point? so that all posts on these proposed boards would stand alone? we already have the built-in PM messaging function on our forums. Just developing a rudimentary system at launching it here might at least allow us to gauge interest in the idea. (i say that while fully realizing that so many members simply do not use the forums...which concerns me...but whatever)

Sounds perfectly reasonable. Syd and i will draft a letter together this weekend and get it out. Appreciate the response and willingness to listen.

I don't think anyone believes the president, or EC's relationship with the body - least of all Syd and I - is anything remotely near a scenario which is "jump! How high?"  in nature. Everyone I know who has worked directly with/under you has had nothing but glowing reccomendations with regard to your reason and competence. The question of whether or not all members need to know everything the powers that be do; is a challenging and multiplicitous one. One that is neither easy to settle or applicable to the heart of this threads genesis. I believe I speak for Syd when I say we are most concerned with the reliable expansion and proficiency of our artform before we are anything else, at all.

I have faith in our leadership. If for no other reason than that they have got us where we are now. Which is a pretty remarkable place. Please don't mistake curiosity for disrespect. We are both sorting out our boundaries in how we can bbest assist our peers.

Much respect.

It might be another thread. And i sympathize with that frustration, though im willing to surrender some of my moral itches in an effort to achieve what i think can be achieved at this very moment, without putting my head under the hood.

While I personally still would really love to see ALLL of that information, I understand perfectly why I cannot. Why that creates unnecessary headaches. Reasonable in every way.

However, my follow-up would be: what about hyper-specific pieces of information that could be culled from those documents. Information relevant to the projects we are attempting to undertake.

If not, then one thing we mentioned is the idea of just, knowing who the former HC's are. Allowing us to contact each independently, and request to 'interview' them on their experience. what was easy. what was difficult. what steps each of them took to promote and market the tournament. If we could cross-reference all the various marketing inititatives that different tournaments in enacted (or chose not to enact) with the results of how those tournaments fared, we might have some useful data.

Again, as has been mentioned repeatedly, and rightfully so - each tournament, city, even venue, is unique. But if we noticed that some marketing tactics were employed unilaterally, some inconsistently, some only once...we might learn something valuable about how our events are marketed.

So unless i missed it, is it not possible to get the info on who Syd and I can reach out to about their individual tournament experiences? I can come up with some names on my own. But it would be incomplete for sure. And if you would be uneasy just handing out emails (which i certainly wouldnt contest), could YOU, or the EC reach out to these individuals and ask if they would consent to taking part in an informal poll about their experience? Then directing them to us? Is this the sort of thing that would traditionally require a vote?

I think this initial information-culling process is vital to how we shape the coming body of this idea. Whatever insight you can offer is greatly appreciated.

I have... lots of thoughts.

But...i have my own slam to run and need to get down to this venue early to sort out some scheduling issues while the owner is there. ill try and respond in length a bit later today.

thanks so much for being on top of this with us. the information is super eye-opening, and helping me see what exactly this all looks like.

this is something that will come up often...but you are smarter than i am, so sometimes your sentences make my forehead swell.

my main through in the initial production of this is to just list all of the things that go into these events, and what skills are relevant.

at the same time find a way to begin collecting from the body members who are willing to offer services or input/consultation on a variety of levels. we can then sort these into categories and flesh out the 'yellow pages' like form (as a rudimentary and easy to manage initial version)

if those two things come together, we should be able to get help to the right people when they need it.

that being said, again, your brain is better than mine. so if you have a more intelligent way of doing this, ill follow your lead gladly

Yes. Simone, anything you can offer in terms of insight as to what you really felt would have been helpful in your journey/what sort of documents or guidelines would have made your job easier, it would be an enormous help. We would love to produce some sort of warehouse of resources and assistance for future HC's. Counting on the past experience of folks whove done your job will help up sort out what would be useful and what wouldnt.

Syd perhaps we should reach out directly to the last six or seven HCs, and poll them informally on their experience, what theyd want to have had, what they felt was effficient or not? Maybe we put together a list of questions and email/mssg them directly?

Which will eventually beg the question, Scott, is there a simple resource for finding out who the host's have been for, lets say the last three years of tournaments?

beautiful

okay.

i think the latter of your posts is a more long-term thing, but a highly desireable outcome.

for me the most immediate need is for HC's to have access to all the best resources the community is willing to offer in terms of skills and services. I can certainly see this evolving beyond that to be a general list for anyone in the community who needs assistance with their own slams. Which brings to mind what i think is an important distinction:

skills/services vs consultation

there are people who can offer tangible assistance: (flyer producing)

and people who can offer intangible(!) assistance: (how to best use those flyers)

there are innumerable folks in this community with knowledge that can be tapped from anywhere in the country. Slammer McMotherboards might be able to help you with your tournaments website's google ranking. She can do that from anywhere. If i know Ms. Motherboards was out there and willing to assist (maybe i saw Ms Motherboards home venue's website and its super sweet), then this would be a way to know if she was cool to help, and how i could contact.

i believe a first landmark to reach would be having a document wherein HC's could refer to for their individual event (id go so far as to say they SHOULD consult someone from outside the HCC on everything they do, just for a fresh set of impartial eyes).

down the road, opening this up to all SM's to help them with their own regular slams?

lets keep the conversation going and sort out a form that this thing could take shape.

great work as always syd.

Can the body have access to these documents?

If not on a regular basis, can we see an example of a past tournaments post-event reporting? (i would suggest our last two events, nps11 and iwps11, as those events came in on both sides of the attendance fence, while both were wildly fun times for the poets. )
