General Discussion / Change in PSI Events Calendar

I can imagine poets who were the highest scoring individuals at Nats wanting an auto bid for IWPS, having a month between. It also might do wonkery things in terms of budget, although for teams who don't go to Nats from W & I who want to send an Indie instead, it might be just the ticket.
It does make logical sense to put the WOW in March.OH, and removes some of the anxiety about traveling North in winter....

Interesting spin of the wheels...@@@@

General Discussion / The Web Site Suggestion Box
« on: March 05, 2007, 10:57:14 AM »
Simone really addressed my navigation issues more in depth. You really have to dig through a lot of material to get to what you want and flip through a buncha stuff, pages, or material that you don't need to get to what we want. I like the portal suggestion, since slam masters need one kind of portal while curious poets need another kind.I also sense there are blindspots and there are whole portions I haven't seen because my log-in for the forums is somehow different from the newslettery area, as I think Wonder Dave mentioned.Simone also brings up a really good point in that I'm sure there are plenty of tech-geek folks who could help out.
I am so glad change is happening.

General Discussion / The Web Site Suggestion Box
« on: March 02, 2007, 04:40:26 PM »
Oh, I have a long list of suggestions!
For starters, the site and the forums are difficult to negotiate.
Similar sites, like GotPoetry or the Austin site, are more up-to-date, prettier visually, and easier to navigate. With something as dynamic and interactive as poetry slams, it's weird to me that local scenes have up-to-date-informative & snazzier websites than this one.I'm not a tech geek, so I know there's a bunch of behind-the scenes stuff and reasons for it to be this way....still...I'm just saying.Even in the last few years, so much has changed with expectations of what should be on a site and how visual & aural they are with people using wikipedia, myspace, etc. I'm not suggesting we should go for that, but thinking of how many younger poets there are or poets with tech savvy goods who put together their own sites, the style & look of a site matters almost as much as content.Style has become a factor and a principle as a tool for making content accessible (click on this picture, go here).
All that said, I like the forums for getting messages and communication out there in a timely way, but the site itself is antique looking, overly text heavy and seems to need more frequent updating.
I totally understand the limitations & such---we face the same interactive issues at my job between the functions behind the scenes of a library and the digitally proficient patron.
You did ask, right?

General Discussion / Housing Touring Poets: Question about?
« on: January 26, 2007, 04:04:35 PM »
I always ask if the people need a place to stay.Sometimes even offer it to poets travelling whose gigs in this city didn't work out for whatever reason. But unless it's a Very Special circumstance, I put it out there right away that hotel=on one's own & hope they can be grown-up enough to work that out. There a few reasonable places I suggest, but that's it.Unless it's a Very Special Circumstance.
I like that check-off idea. Then it's not only upfront, but also in writing.
I consider poets staying over as one of the perks. I understand when life presents that whole hassle problem, too, though.
Backing out the day of the show, or even, say, two days before, unless it's an emergency or a car breaks down or something, is just rude.

Awesome!
Now....I'm helping with putting on a Lad/yfest here in a couple of weeks. (A couple of bands are from Chicago~Yay~!).
I would love ~hinthint~ to have flyers or postcards to put in goodie bags.
There are some 54 bands & performers coming & almost half of them are poets--mostly from the SE, but some from other places.
The fest is the week before IWPS, and I guess there will be flyers postcards for that?
Otherwise, I can try to make one from the graphics that went out, but I'm not sure I'll have time.

When I have a nice month lined up with a lot going on, I try a newsletter format for that month during the first week.
Then I send out announcements for each event a week in advance and then, perhaps, 3-4 days before.
Papers, of course, have their own sched to keep up with, as well as different lists I don't want to be hitting constantly, like spam.
I am better about this with some events and months than others.
I have worked my butt off, done everything right, and haven't met expectations and other times, I have done the minimum and word of mouth spread to exceed my expectations.
I know that steady effort builds reliability and  prevents the leaner, more discouraging times from getting us down, and some seasons have all and nothing while others are also steady. The important thing is, as with so many aspects, the doing.

Two Atlanta chicks also seeking 3rd & 4th roomies, possibly a rollerderby queen, who knows.Please.

Also, I tired to reserve on-line, but....what's the group rate code?
I tried a bunch of "IWPS" letter combos, but it didn't work.

Hey Lindsay, what's the deadline? If you've got a flyer, could you send me a copy or few (by January 15th)? Then I can include them in Lad/yfest South artists packets. We've got something like 75 performers coming.Amy will be here for it, too, so she can mybe give it a plug.
Awesome.

There's also one called Brave New Voices: the Youth Speaks Guide to teaching spoken word-poetry,by Jane Weiss, Scott Herndon
which I know our library just received, if nobody else has mentioned it.
