General Discussion / Re: Help a poet out! (How to go about...)
« on: April 24, 2013, 01:31:32 PM »
So my Questions:
-How do you go about finding individual Slams?
-How do you go about finding features/Venues, so you can travel, and make money at least just to get there and back?
-How do you spread your work here? Is there a section?

Fable!

I can help assuage your fears because I SAW you win at the Green Mill and you are indeed talented. Here's some answers to your specicif questions:

1) There is a slam map on this site at http://www.poetryslam.com/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/profile/map&map=1&gid=2&reset=1&Itemid=127
It may not be 100% up to date, but it should help you get started. For big regional events, you are right in the middle of the Rustbelt Poetry Slam. So you should check that out, too.
https://twitter.com/RustbeltPS2013
https://www.facebook.com/groups/Rustbelt2011/

2) That's a tricky question because so much of that is networking. Again, refer to the slam map to get started, start making connections, and get good video/press of your performances. Some venues take unsolicited offers, others want a vetting process, and still more are invite only

3) This is not a great place to post work and get feedback. Other places like www.gotpoetry.com and even facebook (tagging people in notes) are more effective

Good luck and I hope that helps!

I'm honored to continue to serve as secretary. Thank you for your trust.

If you could all stop calling me "Cassie," though, that'd be nice... ;)

Salt City Slam
Last Monday of every month
Kafeneio Coffeehouse
258 W 3300 S
Salt Lake City, UT
https://www.facebook.com/SaltCityIndieArts

The last Monday of the month at 8pm, we will hold a poetry slam, which is a three round competition to determine who is able to curry the most favor from the crowd.

We have a point system for participation in open mics and placing in slams. At poetry slams, held once a month at Mo's Neighborhood Grill on the last Monday of the month, 10 people will be allowed to participate. 27 points will be awarded for winning a slam, 14 for second, 9 for 3rd, 5 for 4th and 2 points are awarded for everyone else. In addition, the host will be be awarded 3 points.

These points will determine the top 10 contenders for our finals that will vie for our team slots and the opportunity to participate in the 2011 National Poetry Slam. If one of the qualifiers after this selection is completed cannot attend NPS, we will select a replacement based on where individuals finished in finals.

The iWPS representative for Salt City Slam will be the slam champion (winner of the Team Selection Slam) from that year. If the slam champion from that year declines to attend, the next highest ranking poet from the Team Selection Slam will be asked, and so forth. If no competitor in the Team Selection Slam is able to attend, an open slam of interested participants will be held to determine who will represent the venue.

WOWPS representative will be chosen from the winner of an open slam competition.

General Discussion / Re: Electronics Use During Slams

I guess my remaining curiousity deals with the clocks and stopwatches contained on most smart phones... doesn't that make most of them props?
Shouldn't it?

I refer to the above prop description

From page 40 of the PSi handbook:

Quote from: PSi Handbook - page 40
Prop: an object or article of clothing introduced into a performance with the
effect of enhancing, illustrating, underscoring, or otherwise augmenting the
words of the poem.

At the national level, there is nothing that would explicitly keep you from reading from a paper, scroll, tablet (stone or electronic), etc. as long as it does not have the effect of enhancing, illustrating, underscoring, or otherwise augmenting the words of the poem.

In addition, on page 35:

Quote from: PSi Handbook - page 35
Teams or individuals who inadvertently use a prop (for example, a
timely yet unwitting grab at a necklace) can be immediately penalized two
points if the MC of the bout deems the effect of the violation to have been
appreciable, but sufficiently lacking in specific intent.

So, intent is clearly the driving factor in enhancing the poem, but the emcee can use their discretion as well. It would still need to be clear that the object read of of has enhanced the poem in some way.

Locally, our slam does not consider anything that is read off of a prop, as long as it is not mentioned in the poem.

General Discussion / Re: Why can't I renew my PSI membership?
« on: January 29, 2013, 05:04:12 PM »
It's a bit confusing, but there is a link on the Web site under the search bar that says "Become a PSi Member".

It is there that you sign up or renew your membership (or purchase someone else's)

http://www.poetryslam.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=169&Itemid=102

Sorry for the confusion. There are technical reasons for this that are being looked into.

General Discussion / EC Candidates in 2013
« on: January 16, 2013, 03:17:09 PM »
Just a note to remind you all what EC members are currently coming up on their end of term/re-elections

Henry Sampson - President (expires in 2013)
Suzi Q Smith - Vice-President (expires in 2014)
Jesse Parent - Secretary (expires in 2014)
Inkera Oshun - Treasurer (expires in 2013)
Sam Castello - Trustee (expires in 2014)
Karen G - Trustee (expires in 2013)
LoGic - Trustee (expires in 2013)

It is valuable to know who will seek re-election as well as who would be interested in running for the EC this year. Last year had a record number of candidates and it would be wonderful to see that level of interest, again.
