General Discussion / 2008 Southwest Shootout Results
« on: June 25, 2008, 05:18:24 PM »
As I am needing a few days vacation to recoop from my vacation, These are the results from the
Southwest Shootout Regional Poetry Slam held in Dallas, Tx June 19-21st

15 teams competed

Albuquerque, Amarillo, Austin, Austin Neo Soul, Bryan College Station, Corpus Christie
Dallas, Denver-Mercury, Denver Slam Nuba, Ft Worth, Houston, Louisiana Unified (Pick up Team)
Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Silver City.

Denver Slam Nuba, Denver Mercury, Austin and Bryan College Station advanced to the Final Round on Saturday

Denver Slam Nuba was the Champion!

Individual Champion was determined by representatives from each team competing in a
Sudden Death, Head to Head, Single Elimination Win or Go Home Competition.
Joaquin Zihuatanejo from Lousiana Unified (Pick up Team) won the Indy competition

Haiku Death Match Champion was non other than Mr. Ed Mabrey!

Other important stats, 32 gallons of beer and 5 bottles of Vodka were consumed in 2 days.  One set of car keys was fished from certain death out of a storm drain with bungee chords, a winning haiku included a reference to a "tazerd dog", and 3 teams were ejected from the host hotel @ 4am on Saturday due to excessive frevolity.

It was a fantastic weekend of poetry!  Many thanks from the Dallas Crew to the poets and entourage that traveled for the event.  We hope to do another festival event in 2009.

always and gratefully yours

On that Da Shade thread, give it time and he might be able to help with Eryka Badu.....seems he ran in to her at the tatoo joint next to July Alley where we had the Finals for Southwest Shootout.  They could be distant cousins.

There maybe a side trip to the Harley Davidson plant & museum in Milwaukee for yours truly.  Any two wheel combustion enthusiasts are welcome to join me one afternoon early in the week.

General Discussion / Win & You're In Deadlines
« on: April 11, 2008, 11:00:48 AM »
To all the Poetry Family

March 31st has been deemed the deadline to complete bouts for the Win & You're In qualifiers from conception.  We are now adding another deadline to the mix in this regard.  April 10th will be the deadline date to get Win & You're In contracts and rosters to the secretary for recording so that we may have the opportunity to complete W&YI before the April Slam Master meetings.  10 days past the final night for bouts is sufficient.  I, and future secretaries, will appreciate the future diligence.

always and respectfully yours,

Bob Whoopeecat Stephenson

General Discussion / Re: When Did You 'Fall In Love' With Spoken Word/Slam

I started writing more poetry in 1985 when I couldn't take my horn on the road with me while opening restaurants.  Seems guys in the La Quinta Inns didn't like staying up till all hours listening to me doing jazz progressions and improving to Gillespie/Bird tapes.  Ellum for a more exciting form of poetry because I didn't want my future wife to "stay home next time".

Wait a minute: WHAT horn?!

I have jumped back a bit and have a bell front baritone sitting about two feet from my computer now.  It gets played rarely.  I used to play euphonium, bell front baritone, valve trombone, trombone, bass trombone and super bone at one point.  Being neglected at the moment.

Just so folks don't miss understand on the pics from DIPS.  Cher only charges for the photos if you want actual prints made for framing or gifts to folks.  Contact her about using digital images for personal use or publications.  She does not charge for those, but does ask that she gets photo credit.

I didn't think that there would be enough to fill a book about the actual structure of Slam Poetry either until Marc did the Idiots Guide to Slam Poetry.

A combination DIPS/Southwest Shootout will be held in Dallas next year.  Dallas is taking a turn at hosting the SWSO.  It started in Albuquerque, has seen stops in Austin and Flagstaff, and now our crew is going take a shot at having a good show.  Tentative dates are around July 10th-12th.

Just a reminder, take a look at the 5 final teams at NPS 2007, 4 performed at DIPS and the 5th was represented by Roger Bonair-agard our first night feature and DIPS host.  Your Indy champion, Sexy Danny, also performed at DIPS with Seattle.  Your 2006 champion team (Denver) also performed at DIPS in '06.  Things to ponder when making your pre NPS warm up tourney plans for 2008.
