Slam Selection Processes / Twin Cities Unified Team
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:29:44 PM »
I.E. How the St. Paul Soap Boxing Poetry Slam team is chosen:

In a nutshell - it goes something like this.

1st Place = 8 points

2nd Place = 4 points

3rd place = 2 points

Competing in a Slam = 1 point

(If you sign up but are not drawn to compete, you will still earn a point as though you did compete)

Each Slam (One per month - September thru April) will be a qualifier*.

Each Slam will be open to anyone - who is over 18

(Up to ten poets may compete in a Slam)

* The Sept. - Dec. Slams will also be qualifiers for the 2011 Women of The World Poetry Slam. Any women who make the top three during these prelims will compete in January to see who earns their place at this event. (The winner must cover all of their own expenses associated with WOWPS.)

The GRAND SLAM will be held on May 2nd, 2011.

The Grand Slam will be reserved for the eight poets who have collected the most points throughout the season (at Soap Boxing only)

**note** A poet must compete in at least two (2) qualifier Slams to be eligible to compete in the Grand Slam, regardless of how many points they have.

If there is a tie for the eighth spot, one more poet may compete.

If there are more than two poets tied for the 8th spot, there will be a Slam-off to determine who competes.

The Grand Slam will be a four (4) round Slam. All 8 poets will compete in the first round, and again in reverse order for the second round. The 6 poets with the highest cumulative scores will advance to the 3rd round with a ‘clean slate’ (their scores will go back to zero) and a random draw. They will then perform again in reverse order for the fourth round.

The winners will be the 2 poets with the highest cumulative scores from the 3rd and 4th rounds.

*** The 1st place winner of the Grand Slam will represent St. Paul at the 2011 Individual World Poetry Slam (IWPS).***

The top 2 poets of the Grand Slam will join the top 2 poets from the SlamMN Team Selection Slam to form the Twin Cities National Team that will go to the PSI National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, NC in August.  There may be a separate slam for an alternate position.
UPDATE May 10th

We will be holding a slam for the alternate position on the TC slam team on May 29th at Kieran's Irish Pub. This slam will be open to all poets who have competed at either Kieran's or the AQ in the 2011/2012 slam season. This 5th spot will be a strict alternate, and is unlikely to compete at NPS 2012.

The "TEAM" is the group of poets who will compete in the National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, NC in August 2012.

***Should, due to any circumstances, a team member have to drop out of Nationals competition, the alternate will take that team member's spot, and the 3rd place individuals at both slams will flip a coin to decide who would then move into the alternate's spot - and so on in the same manner. If for some disasterous reason, all of those who competed in the Grand Slam find themselves unable to compete at nationals and a four person team cannot be fielded - a new competition will be held, and the remainder of the team will be completed from the winners of this competition.*** This Information is likely to change in the near future.

Soap boxing does not guarantee funding for travel, lodging, or any expenses associated with Nationals or Soap Boxing Slam related activities.

More Team details may be made available later in the season.

There is no guarantee that Soap Boxing will field a team to go to the National Poetry Slam or any other competition, or that even if a team is formed, it will qualify and/or be able to attend and/or compete in said events. In some instances, poets must be 21 or older to compete at the National Poetry Slam.

Sign ups to compete begin at 7:00 pm and close at 8:00 pm.

The rules are as follows:

· Each poem must be of the poet's own construction.

· Each poet gets three minutes and ten-seconds to read one (1) poem. If the poet goes over the allotted time, one half (1/2) point will be deducted (from the total score) for every ten seconds over time, e.g. if your time is 3:10:00 you're just fine, if it is 3:10:01 you lose 1/2 point, 3:21:01 you lose 1 point and so on.

· The poet may not use props, costumes, or musical instruments or accompaniment. Props are defined as anything not readily available to ANY competing poet (a microphone stand or chair from the audience are not considered a prop) If you refer to a necklace in your poem, then grab the necklace you are wearing, that's a prop, and you will be disqualified.

· Five judges, randomly selected from the audience, score each poem (based on writing, performance, and originality) from 0.0 (the lowest score possible - a bad poem performed very poorly) to 10.0 (the highest score possible - a brilliant poem performed perfectly)

· Of the scores the poet received from the five judges, the high and low scores are dropped, and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0 - 30. All scores throughout the Slam are cumulative.

· The 1st – 3rd place winners win prizes.

The Prizes may come in the form of cash, check, or any possible item. The winning poets may not receive their prizes on the night of the Slam. There is no set amount or value for prizes, regardless of place. The amount gifted to the winners is determined before the Slam begins, but will not be disclosed until the winners are announced. This is done to assure the purity and honesty of the Slam.

First round:

Up to 14 poets perform in a randomly selected order.

Second Round:

The eight highest scoring poets compete again, this time in reverse order from the first round.

Third and final round:

The top four poets with the highest cumulative scores compete in a randomly drawn order.

Rules Revised September 12th 2010. These rules may change at any time with or without prior notice.

+++++++++++

National team:  The top 3 competitors from qualifying slams will qualify for the semi-final bout in either December or April.  (Summer-November enter the December semi, Jan.-March enter the April Semi).  If you place in the top 6 at a semi you are qualified for the team selection slam in May.  The top 2 poets will join the top 2 poets from the Soap-Boxing Team Selection Slam to form the Twin Cities National Team that will go to the PSI National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, NC in August.   We will be holding a slam for the alternate position on the TC slam team on May 29th at Kieran's Irish Pub.  If you earn one of the spots at the AQ slam and are qualified and choose to compete you will not be eligible for a ranked spot on the team through SlamMN! This slam will be open to all poets who have competed at either Kieran's or the AQ in the 2011/2012 slam season. This 5th spot will be a strict alternate, and is unlikely to compete at NPS 2012.

The Team Selection Finals will have a minimum of 9 competitors.  If less than 9 qualified competitors are present and able to compete at a Finals show contestants shall be moved up based on the total number of points (this is different than scores) earned throughout the season.  The point structure works as follows:

1st place = 4 points

2nd place = 3 points

3rd place = 2 points

Competing at a slam without placing = 1 point

First Off I'll repost Faylita's Links since they aren't coming up on my computer correctly:

 http://www.poetryslam.com/forum/index.php?topic=5477.0

is a previous forums discussion. And the Scott's facebook note that prompted the discussion is here:

http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10150162690879300

it was also on the Livejournal: http://scottwoods.livejournal.com/387493.html -folks should read this I love a lot f what Scott has to say about the importance of slam and the human element of it all.

Second I'll throw in that Slam has turned into a serious competition especially on a National Level. BUT I'll also throw in that it is often a competition that I (and several other participants) don't take seriously. Perhaps this is why my resume is devoid of any National Championships (regional events are a different story).

I will also add that i think one thing young slammers might not hear often enough is that being a Slam Champion is not the only way to succeed in the world of slam. I've done quite well without it by being a good writer and performer and a pretty swell guy. I've done two, month long tours throughout the US, a number of one-off features, had my work published in literary journals and anthologies, and been a guest speaker on radio programs.

I'll be back with more soon on the idea of "Mock" and the pros and cons of its use because as I type this I realize I don't have the time to express myself fully. -Hugs WD

We did a local version of this in MN in the past specifically for slam. I've heard of other scenes doing their own as well. There was a also on MN Spoken Word Award that featured a number of Slammers. Award shows are fun but Someone would have to step up and organize it but I'd say if you build it they will come.

General Discussion / NPS poets and crew do you use Twitter?
« on: June 14, 2010, 06:49:56 PM »
Hey Y'all our webmaster has expressed an interest in using twitter as a way to get the locals excited about NPS.

My question to y'all is do you use twitter? Would you be willing to post stuff about how you're preparing for Nationals, video links to you/your team performing, what you're looking forward to, other NPS related items?

Admittedly I myself do not use twitter and know nothing about it. I am curious how much of the National Community uses twitter.

General Discussion / Re: Rules for Protesting a Plagiarized Poem in a Slam?

I second what Jesse Said. Also Does this slam have a website with a rules section? Look into that and see if there rules specifically address this issue in some way. (i.e. an All poets must perform original work rule). Then Bring it up to your local Slam Master.

My room mate Aimee Renaud (She was on the Minneapolis Youth team at BNV this past year) and I are looking for a new roomie for around January 1st. Doesn't moving to Minnesota in the Middle of Winter and living in a basement level apartment sound like the best idea ever?

Rent is $250 a month and that's not a typo. My place is hella cheap bills only add about another $50 to that.

Here are the 2010 selection rules for
SlamMN
The 4th Tuesday of the month (most months)
Kieran's Irish Pub
330 2nd Ave S.
Minneapolis MN

SlamMN! poetry slams typically take place on the fourth Tuesday of the month check the calendar for more info. Signup and seating opens at 7:00 pm with the slam commencing at 8:00 pm.

The RULES
Each Poet is given 3 minutes (for some events this time limit changed) to perform an original piece of work. The host will announce bout structure and explain any special rules for the evening at the beginning of the bout. Be sure to listen carefully!

Most slams have an open sign-up these are called Qualifying Slams,
if you place in the top 3 at a Qualifying slam you are qualified to advance to the Semi-Final Slam!
if you place in the top 5 at the Semi-Finals Slam you may advance to the Team Selection Slam! The winner of each Semi-final will be offered a slot on the National Team and will earn a slot in the IWPS representative match.
if you ranked high enough at the Team selection Slam you are on the SlamMN National Poetry Slam Team Congrats!

Slams are open to anyone, however, according to Poetry Slam Inc. regulations, poets must be 21 years of age in order to participate at the National Poetry Slam; some years the host city lowers this age limit to 18. Our local venue is all ages, and we encourage poets of all ages to participate in the local competition.

SlamMN! slams are run in multiple rounds of competition and with the highest scoring poets from each round advancing. Qualifying slams are open to 12 poets. In instances of tied scores (within 0.1 points of one another), tied poets will advance. The top three poets in each Qualifying Slam can advance to Semi-finals.
·   ORIGINAL WORK: Poets must perform original work.
·   NO-REPEAT RULE: In the first round of every slam, you are required to perform a piece that has not been previously performed during a poetry slam at Kieran's during that season. For those poets that have been on a SlamMN! slam team, you cannot use any poem that has been used in a SlamMN! team chapbook or on a SlamMN! team CD during the time you were on the team.
·   NO REPEAT SHEET: At each slam competitors will be given a form to fill out listing the poems they competed with that evening. List only the poems that you used and turn the sheet in at the end of the show. You are not eligible to compete in another slam until the turned in form is received.
·   SAMPLING: using a part of another person's poem within your own poem is allowed. For example, if you quote a line from Robert Frost, you can still use that poem. If Robert Frost wrote the poem and you include a quote from you, you cannot use the poem.
·   LENGTH: You have three minutes to perform one poem in each round. Poems written in parts (i.e. eight haiku about winter) are allowed if they are performed as one piece. For certain competitions the time limit is changed this will be announced in advance.
·   TIME PENALTY: After three minutes (or whatever the allotted time may be) and a ten second grace period, your overall score will be penalized. Time penalties are half a point for every ten second you go over. For example: if your performance is 3:09:29, you are in the clear. If it is 3:10:01, 0.5 points will be subtracted from your score. If it is 3:42:05, then you will have 2.0 points deducted, etc.
·   PROPS: You cannot use props, costumes or musical accompaniment. You can beat box, make arm pit noises, whistle, or sing. You cannot break out the kazoo or bring a beat loop.
·   JUDGES: Your poem and performance will be judged by three to five judges selected before the show. Every effort is made to select a diverse group of judges that preferably do not have any connections to any of the competing poets. SlamMN! is limited by who is at the venue and who is willing to judge. If a poet has a problem with any of the judges selected, they should notify the host before the competition begins.
·   SCORING: The judges will score each performance from 0.0 to 10.0. Zero is very bad, ten is very good. If we have five judges the high and low scores are dropped and the three scores in the middle are added together. This sum is your score for the round.
If the winners of the team Selection Slam are unable to attend NPS SlamMN will go down the list of qualified finals poets to determine the team.

The Finals will have a minimum of 7 competitors if less than 7 qualified competitors are present and able to compete at the Team Selection show Contestants shall be moved up from based on the total number of Points (this is different than scores) earned throughout the Season The Point structure works as follows:

1st place = 5 points
2nd place = 4 points
3rd place = 3 points
Competing at a slam without placing = 1 point

SlamMN will move up poets to insure a total number of 7 in Finals if there is a two way tie for points we will take up to 8 poets. If there is a tie that would result in more than a total  of 8 poets in finals we will break the tie first by rank in Semi-Finals and then by total Score in Semi-finals. If the poets involved in the tie-breaker competed in both semi-finals their highest ranking bout will be used as the determining factor.

If you have any questions, please email the Slam Masters.

General Discussion / Calling Chicago area Poets and performers!
« on: August 05, 2009, 12:25:22 PM »
Hey Good people of Chi-town. I just this e-mail from my friend Cathy in Chi-town. She's looking for a few acts for a war -time era show. Contact her at the e-mail address listed below. I have no additonal info on this show. I have performed in Burlesque shows with Cathy in the past and she's fun to work with and a good person.

The Letter:

Looking for up to 4 acts for a wartime era based theater show. We have lots of singing and burlesque already, but we are missing performance art, spoken word, and experimental dance. This is a fundraising event.

The show will be a 2 night run on a Friday and Saturday (Sept 11th & 12th). Normally when I produce fundraising events, I ask that performers donate their time. Because this is a 2 night run and new material will half to be created, I would like to offer $35. I know it is not much, but if I go higher than that, I am afraid that it will not leave us much to donate.

We will have a narrator (Oosha Boom) who will be developing a storyline. The acts for this should be a little longer (5-8ish min... combining music is just fine) so that the show is about 90 min long.

If you are interested in creating a challenging, dramatic piece to include in the one of a kind production, please contact me ASAP at FleshTones@gmail.com

Thanks,

Cathy Russell

I'm just gonna say the fact that no one has mentioned the need for a Jewish open mic probably represents the need for one.

I totally mentioned it earlier Klute.  :P
 :)
I was sad last year that the Jewish open mic and the queer show conflicted cause some people are both and some people split their time between the two.  So I suppose I'm seconding Karen G on this one. That at the very least identity specific slams hopefully don't clash.

I personally however would be very sad to see the Queer open mic conflict with the Nerd Slam. Oh the tearing apart of my identity.

15
I don't know. I really enjoyed the Queer show because, well, I'm the ONLY gay male who competes at my slam and one of only two glbt people who competed at all this season in the Twin Cities. It's nice for me to be able to see other folks like me who do what I do. And at least at the Minneapolis/ St. Paul Slam it does not hold true that there are a lot of people of color that perform (part of this is of course the ethnic make-up of the twin Cities). I can think of only 1 native American person who competed this season and maybe 5 or 6 African American poets. Asians one. Jewish folk one. I understand wanting these side events to occur.
