General Discussion / Re: Electronics Use During Slams
« on: March 04, 2013, 09:32:33 AM »
yeah, I do not see at all why it would be cheating.

In most team competitions, a poet has a "time spotter" giving hands signals informing the reader about the passsage of time progress. That is not cheating. Similarly, a clock attached to an electronic d is not cheating either.

Cool slam! Make sure that the show has a flow.
So, perhaps, first all the poets read a poem each, then the slam dunk competition (just a suggestion).

Slam Selection Processes / Ballabajoomba PS (Corpus Christi)
« on: September 24, 2011, 06:55:46 PM »
Ballabajoomba Poetry Slam
During the season (November - July) -- the 2nd and the 4th Thursday of each month
(occasionally other Thursdays (and other dates/venues))
The House of Rock, 511 Starr Street, TX 78401
(361) 882-7625
sign up 8 p.m., open slam 8:30-11:00

We try to accommodate as many poets as possible (usually up to 16 poets); cuts determined by the number of poets and time we have. Usually three rounds with the final cut to 3.

Slamoff determines who qualifies for the team to travel to nationally sanctioned events (NPS, Wow, iWPS). To qualify for the slamoff, a poet must read 5 times during the year or make four times the money round (usually, the top 3 poets). If necessary, semis will narrow down the field to 9-10. If one of the top 4 poets cannot go to the Nationals, the next highest ranked poet is qualified for the team.

General Discussion / Re: Question about NPS DVD's
« on: August 23, 2011, 01:44:30 PM »
Ah.

Who... out of curiousity, has the rights to this dvd?....totally...out of curiousity..

Also,  I showed some of my non slam friends the DVD's from 06 and 08 and while they really liked the poetry, they didn't understand how the winners and losers were determined because that info isn't included on the DVD.

I think scoring info would be a wonderful addition to the NPS 2011 DVD.  ;D
Based on my watching a few with scores (when I had them) and without scores, I think the videos would be more interesting if they included announced scores or, at least, if they came with score sheets. The fact that it's a competition adds an iengaging element to the show.

General Discussion / Re: WHY DO YOU SLAM?

That's where the audience is.
(And lots of fun, too.)

I love this response.

Thank you!

I was thinking about some other reasons. But, frankly, that's about it for me.

"Who is not eligible to compete in the Grand Slam ?

Slammasters from other venues."

Why such a restriction, if I may ask?

How about the results of the Championship Slam?

Two things:

1) To be fair to BigPoppaE
I take his post to be a question (and not a critisism,
and he further clarified it two posts further)
and an invitation to a discussion.

I like that the tournament is as big as feasible.
If there is a process of selecting Storm Poets for available spots
(after all deadlines were met),
and if the process of selection is FAIR
there is no problem in my mind.

General Discussion / Re: UPDATE: iWPS 2010 Host Change

I'll try to come to Charlotte to help with the bouts
and to meet friends. So, post the dates ASAP.
It would be my first iWPS.

BTW, as a possibility,
lots of poets may have an open date on the dares when it was supposed to happen in Philly.

Philly still could have a great event, a great slam, if they want to do it.
Just because iWPS moves, it does not mean that there cannot be a greaty event in philly
maybe some scaled down event, open mics...
some serious slam
Especially, if they can put some money on the line.

I'm really sorry it did not work out.
I was hoping to maie it to Philadelphia, too.

I know Ch will do a great job and that it will be a great even
and lots of fun.
It all will work out.

I have an immediate factor to brig to you attention.
You probably already know it but still keep in mind
the beginning of December means that students take their final exams
this may be a huge factor...

Just a moment ago (Sept 17, Th) I was able to make a reservation for a room (two double-beds). The trick was to talk with the reservation folks on the phone -- 866-466-9199 (tall free) or 510-845-7300.

See you soon.

General Discussion / Re: no repeat rule
« on: August 18, 2009, 09:45:37 PM »
There are some "debates" that a never resolved because of the revolving door in the SlamMasters Council.
True. But also, they are unresolved because there are very good reasons on both sides of the issue.

Frankly, I'd be happy with one decision if it was forced to stay the same for 3 or 4 years before we could look at the exact same issue, with the exact same debate again.
I think the rule was at place, first time, during Austin (II), then Madison, then WPB. That's 3 years, if I'm correct.

Stefan, the thing that divides the "good" of two repeats versus the "good" of all repeats is that we wouldn't be having this argument (this way) if the compromise would have been achieved.
Personally, I do not think it's a bad argument (or bad way to argue).

This community has got to learn to stop doing things in the interest of how THEIR team likes to play and leave the field open for all versions of play.  We all need to learn that what helps Slam isn't sharpening the rules to an infinite level, but good poetry; not hammering out every strategic possbility, but generating interest in artistic risk.  And so on.
I agree with all of this.

Just to clarify, I wanted to add that, personally, I was not motivated at all by what is in the interest of my team (in fact, we have not had team at the NPS for two year) or even my scene.
