Peace, Fam:

There are 4 rooms left for Friday and 9 rooms left for Saturday.  Casey Davis Gwin, our contact at Wyndham, said that she is willing to secure those rooms directly.

The hotel is indeed pretty much sold out (which I think is incredible).  I understand from the Host City that there is a Radisson up the street that may be able to hold our overflow.  We're looking into that and hoping to negotiate a deal.

Contact Casey directly at:

General Discussion / iWPS 2013 - Requests for Bids!!
« on: September 02, 2011, 10:58:14 AM »

***This is cross-posted in the SlamMasters Forum***

Peace, Everyone!!

It’s La Shaun phoenix Kotaran, your super-amped Event Coordinator for the Individual World Poetry Slam.

This is an official call to host the 2013 iWPS in your city!

If there are any interested parties who want to host iWPS 2013, please make your intention known here or via email to myself by September 23, 2011.  My email address is:

powerfulblackwoman19@gmail.com

Subject line should be: “ iWPS 2013 Host”

At that point, all interested parties will receive from me a vetting packet of questions and considerations regarding your potential to host the event, which you will return to me by October 3, 2011.  It is my intention to have the EC make a decision on iWPS 2013 before or during the EC Retreat scheduled for October.

Please understand that this is not a request for “I’ll do it if you need me to” bids.  This is a call for cities who WANT to host for 2013.  Also, you need not have the bid completed to state interest.  That’s what the vetting packet you’ll receive is for.

Anyone can bid for iWPS.  It need not be a SlamMaster or even a member of PSi.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you!!

General Discussion / Re: IWPS 2011 Questions
« on: August 24, 2011, 11:31:04 PM »
I'm assuming all of the main events at IWPS will be alcohol free.  Not that I drink, but, just curious.

iWPS will be housed at Cleveland State University.  All of the venues are alcohol free for prelims and finals.  The night events will have alcohol.

* Community Memorial Service for D Blair

Come celebrate the life of our beloved Blair this Sunday, July 31, 2011.

We want to give Blair back some of the love and life he gave to all of us. We are going to send him off with a 2nd Line Jazz funeral and we invite you to come mourn and celebrate.

1pm: Please gather on the corner of Cass and MLK/Mack. We will march down Cass to the Unitarian Universalist Church (UU) at 4605 Cass on the corner of Forest. Percussion instruments are welcome to join in this march.

2pm: Life Celebration at the UU church

3pm: We will 2nd Line March back out into the street and let Detroit hear us celebrate.

3:30pm: Community Potluck at Memorial Hall at the UU. Please bring a dish.

(Donations are welcome to support this effort)

* Memorial services will also be held in New Jersey.

General Discussion / Memorial Information for David Blair
« on: July 26, 2011, 03:52:37 PM »
Peace, Fam:

As you know our slam poet and friend, David Blair, passed away this weekend.  A website has been launched to provide his obituary, memorial service information and ways that the poetry community can contribute to his family to offset the costs of his final expenses.  The website is: www.dblair.org.

Thank you all so much for the outpouring of love and support you've given the city of Detroit.

La Shaun phoenix Kotaran on behalf of the Friends and Family of David Blair

Trying to build a career off of slam winnings is like trying to pay your rent every month in a casino.

Slam is a competition the way poker is a competition. Poker is a game of both luck and skill. People who have recently won money at poker will tell you it's entirely about skill. People who have recently lost money at poker will tell you it's entirely luck.

Some of us, of course, just like to wear tuxedos and play cards.

Brilliantly put.

They are actually scheduled to be posted today and the judges are still deliberating. We apologize for the delay but will get the poems up as quickly as possible.
