General Discussion / where do i start??
« on: August 11, 2004, 05:37:27 PM »
I've got to start out with my team, for never affirming the horrible things I mistakenly said about myself. Thanks particularly to Jahan for coming out to those damn car washes that I might have otherwise worked all alone, to Sam for the chapbook help, to Marietta for being the raddest slammaster EVER, and to Liv for friendship and keeping me sane. Can't wait for the tour!! And thanks to:

Everyone who swapped a chapbook or a CD with me and everyone who led a workshop, especially Big Poppa E for the tour advice, for being so damn nice, so damn funny, and for writing that poem about barbecuing with your dad.

Lexington and K'zoo for welcoming everyone to the "real" slam by opening their rooms for tag and sacrificing the sleep they weren't going to get anyhow.

Team Dallas for being the most awesome single group of folks at this event. That trolley ride (in one way or another) really made my whole trip. GNO, you're hilarious and a blast to be around; Rock Baby, you're a total sweetheart; Militant, thank the stars you're a good sport; Jason, thank you for being the first to extend sympathy and solidarity to Olivia; Victory, for the little piece of home; Joaquin for that awful pizza poem and all the other stories, and the whole team for backing up my girl on that vagina piece!

Teams Dallas, Albuquerque and Denver for showing each other mad love throughout the bout at the Drink.

Team Oakland for being awesome here and at Big Sur. Especially Kenyatta for having "friends" in common and for jumping over benches to prove it, and Lucky 7 for talking to a bunch of white boys about how it feels to be a queer female of color in front of those judges.

Shane Koyczan for showing me the entire dichotomy of slam as an art all by himself without even realizing.  :?

Teams Worcester and Wicker Park for kicking all kinds of ass , especially to Alvin for unexpected e-mail and Christian for supporting Wicker Park without being on the team, and also being the first person outside my team to talk to me.

Sonya Renee for being the only woman on stage in the final round of indies and then winning.

Team Providence for encouraging everyone to speak, listen, think and pay attention. Also for dedication to activism, and for bringing up issues that most people would prefer to leave on their dinner plates ad just not consider. Specific thanks to Corrina Bain for my hands-down favorite poem of the whole event, Open Letter to the Moon.

Stefan for being an awesome driver and Tio for giving him shit along with me.

Eliel Lucero for hanging out in the room with us, for the drinks at Mississippi Nights, and for getting fucking worked up like crazy at the indie finals-- you rock.

Danny Solis for being awesome, but not too awesome to talk to a rookie, and for opening a dialogue on next year's event now.

Teams Hawaii, Providence, Wicker Park, Worchester and Corpus Christi for the best damn bout I've ever seen in my life. Especially Hawaii for "Recess" and the bus poem.

Drew from Chicago for news of Mary and for doggedly hunting me down just to hear me spit a poem with no voice.

All the non-competitors for giving time, energy and love. All the underage poets for patience, persistence and perserverance. My utmost apologies to those of you who never saw a bout.

Price Armstrong for sunrise over the Big Muddy, for requesting stories and then actually listening, for understanding both white/male priviledge and that "gypped" is a racial slur, for a friendship, and (least of all) for being funny. Your glasses are stylie.

Nam and Black Falcon for being both good sports and amazing poets.

and Haven for the absolutely horrible jokes. My boyfriend loved them.

OK, this is Kitt Jennigs. My membership is effective as of July 16th (assuming my teammate is right about when our slammaster signed us up).
