amy when indies was part on nat the indies poem was up against every poem in the bout even group pieces ---so it should stand to reason that the same should be in effect for the group pieces but i think last year it was rated against just the group pieces----on a different thing the scoring system that used to be inplace was a much more diffulcult and exlcusive system you had to virtually be in the top 4 all the way through even if you lost semi you still could be in but know with the win in semi it is more energetic because even team 16 can get in ----that was a great change

eric----good points did not take into consideration the fact that some bouts score higher than othert ie a late bout chances are has a higher score than an early bout ----i feel this the rank system is the best way to go looking at it this way-----i meant no insult by the rockstar thing---i really wa not trying to insult anyone---i do agree that the group piece show is one of my favorites i am partial to team pieces ever siince mouth almighty tore it up and opened my eyes jto the dynamic of the group voice---however i do feel the quality of writing in the indiviual is increasing in large part to the number of high school slammers and college slammers who are now of adult age and out of school the early developement of those young poets is paying large diviidends ----but am curious as to why this is not reflected in the group work being done----not to say that at the group piece finals was not great last year i had a blasty watching it-----seattles sand piece was a really well done duet----however i still feel that a team who has qualified for the semis should not be given the oppurtunity to pick and choose what direction they want to pursue---with such a largte field there are always gonna be great teams that dont get a chance and whose only oppurtunity to read that extra night is the gp show---and to have a higher ranked team who coould take that from them because they choose to be in the showcase rather than continue in the competition they came for in the first place seems a little unfair --- i know the nature of slam is unfair and that it is just a gimic to get buts in seats to hear poems- slam has done this for poetery more than anything else-however i think that knowing the unfair nature we should strive to insert fairness where ever possible

General Discussion / group piece showcase---selection process

to the family------last year i noticed the group piece show case was done on a ranking system per bout and not the actual top ten scoring team pieces---this does not seem right to me if a team for example is in a bout where they score a 29. 7 on thier piece and two other teams scored 30 then the first team took a 3 and was out of the comp but teams that scored a one rank with a 27. 6 could be in---also the fact that a team can bypass semis to be in group piece showcase is frankly a bunch of bs---we know we cannot win semis so lets try to get some cash in the group piece thing is not making poetry the point it is makin cash the point---IT IS AN HONOR TO GET TO SEMIS NOT TO BE TREADED LIGHHTLY ON --and passing on this to be in the group piece showcase does let another team in semis but it robs a team not given the choice of being in the group piece showcase----dont think semis mean anything ask BRENDA MOOSEY---find me a better poet actual write your ass off poet that came to national every year slamming crafted formally structured poems but never made it to semis let alone the final stage----she would have been thrilled to be in semis even though she would have known that her team was going to loose---but she came for the poems and not the oppurtunity to play rockstar with half ass written language---this is my opinion and i am someone who loves group pieces and would love to see the showcase be reflective of the best pieces shown that year at nationals---thanks for reading this---jason

karen this is a great question or set of questions------first as far as any leadership skills i have demonstrated i feel would be better addressed by my slammaster bob stephensen--or by any person who has been coached or slamed with me either in dallas texas or seattle washington tara hardy allison durazzi and paula friedrick would be excellent sources from there as they were the slammaster and coaches i slamed for.   i would rather have an opinion other than my own to speak to this question.

i am a blue collar guy coming from a long line of hard working people so grunt work wouold be fine by me i am not a better than person dont feel like taking out trash or mopping a floor is beneath me so what ever is asked as long as it does not comnprimise my principles or sense of what is right i would not have a problem.

i am a perosn that tends to get along with most people and does not try to manipulate the spotlight so i think my first responsibility would be the fit in where needed to help what has already been started---i dont like stepping on toes i know i dont like it when mine get stepped on so working with those who are already there to me would be just seeing their vision and trying to find my spot in it i guess i love anyone who truely loves this that is what a family is

i think the growth i showed fromthe last timei sttod in front of the protest committee to the season a few years later when i was on the protest comittee shows that anger and issues around it are not a problem for me and i strive to be someone who walks away from explosive situations --

being a member of this community requires you to build relationships and over the years i have cultivated some very strong bonds with other folks in this community there are some folks who over the years the bond has not as strong hopefully being a member of the ec would require me to enlarge my circle of close friends and make new friends out of strangers---as far as policitcal savy i would say that i would deal honestly with my opinion and not try to manipulate situations for my own personal agenda i am not a very click oriented person so i wold be open to the needs and feelings of others nbo matter how long they had been around or what they had accomplished

only once in the past nine years have i been provoked to fight by another individual i tried to walk away from the situation three seperate times and was followed by and harrassed continually until i gave response a good friend stopped me from physically assaulting this person who was saying things about my manhood wife and childern---i served a suspension from dallas poetry grind which the other poet involved refused to do---then i doubled the amoun t of communit service i was assigned 16 doing close to 32---gthe other poet in the situation was assigned 8 and did not do a single hour----i think example shows of my willingness to admit fault and to atone for those transgression with more than words

i hope this answers your question i think that my old reputation is not a clear example of who i am today i have worked hard the last two years to strengthen the areas of my life that are really imprtant to me and service to the slam is one that i want to build

to scott -----i would like to be on the ec because they are they oversee the operation and direction of the national poetry slam as well as its other festivals--if done right i feel they carry out the vision of the slam family as a whole and provide to ensure avenues for growth of this art stay fertile.   i feel the passion for fainess that i have shown over the years wether in competitive or volunteering roles speak to the point that that i would have the interest of the family and slam petry ahead of my own.

to amy david------the current ec has shown a good vison for growth with choices of festivals one can attend there is something for everyone and it has given the rise to a whole new group of folks that can call this home.   One thingi think would be very helpful to the future of nps is to place the national poetry slam in a city for a two to three year time frame that way a city could get around it with the right city we could find a successful growth of dollars and build stronger community relations.   bob stephenson introduced me to this idea was against it at first but the more i thought on it it sounds good to me.    a smaller thing i feel is important on the artistic side is that poets should be encouraged more to be original and time should be spent on the hooray of craft and not the hooray for looking good on stage----less biting will occur with more workshops and freedom to find your breeath in writing for growth change not writing for the score. . .

to all slammasters my name is jason carney from dallas texas been a member of the family for twelve years never been a champ but a four time finalist never been a slam master but have coached and help fundraise since i got started-----this year i would like to run for the ec but however i cannot attend the meeting show conflicts---bob whoopeecat is going to nominate me and read a statement for me---scott woods however said that i should post here and open myself to your questions so this is what i am doing here ----feel free to ask anything that you think is important in making your choice this year ----i feel that over the years i have shown myself to be a poet that is down for team and poetry and family more than ego and stage time-----i look forwartd to building with you here and in the future---jason carney

General Discussion / Re: Rules for Protesting a Plagiarized Poem in a Slam?
« on: February 26, 2010, 03:14:53 AM »
as i see it today in slam a lot of this is going on from the finals stage at this years nationals where two different folks participated in this ---to the past several years where this sort of low level art has been recieving false scores and high praise ----if you look close the poets who are tributing will always openly do so or in some cases privately let the other poet nknow but we talk to friends yeah i wrote this poenm about tara hardy's poem and so forth-------i wrote a poemthat is a prayer for oliva fromthe words in this purple hand made book i took on tour with me my first time filled it with womens voices of slam with word to olivia i then got homemixed my words with some of the idea and somedirect queots of the ladies but have always given homage to the when i do it in shows even though the idea of the book and poem was mine i still need to acknowledge the contributions----but in slam we have folkws ripping off peoples ideas--like i coached a guy we went to finals got ass kicked by las rives and the sign language poem next slam season the guy i coacked had a new poemabout sign language---limited poets go for the score cause all they got is the me and center of the stage but that shit is hollow when your craft is comprimised with unoriginal or stolen breath----thank for reading
