It's only a matter of time until one sleepless a.m. finds you flipping through channels and finding Slam on ESPN or the Game Network.

General Discussion / funky valentines
« on: February 15, 2005, 11:16:29 AM »
I am running on a strange combination of lack of sleep and adrenelin.  Please excuse my peculiarities.  My valentines gift came in the form of a 7lbs. 13oz. baby boy with a mouth as big as his mother's (international slam champion Gayle Danley-Dooley).  I am so very proud of them both.  I'll tell you more if i can come up with words.

Man was not created for language.  Language was created for man.  The experts don't agree on the rules because the rules change.

Language is the tool we use to communicate our thoughts, ideas, feelings.  Standard English is important for business use and when communicating with those who may not understand our local or individual idioms and expressions.  I believe it is important to know how to use standard English in order to know how to misuse it well.  Slang can be far more colorful, entertaining, and potent than standard English.

All of the above goes for spelling.  If I type "ova", do I mean "over" or "other" or something else?  The correct spelling would be far more effective in that instance.  Of course, slang doesn't always have correct spelling.

In short: how we use, misuse, and fabricate words is part of the fun(k).

General Discussion / Show some love to those around you...

okay, this space is getting a little too syrupy for me; i'm knee deep in poet love...but i'll add my own anyway:
this has been my fifth year at nationals.  despite all the madness in and around the bouts, this year has provided some of the best poetry i've heard.
thanx: poets have come to each other's rescue in more ways than i care to type about (fights, under age issues, funk legends passing away, ...)
thanx: EC and all organizers and volunteers...it's a lot work.
thanx:  everyone who remembered the stuff i've done in past years...makes me feel valuable to the community
thanx:  St. Louis for resonably priced alchohol
thanx: the many physically beautiful poets (you know who you are...i hope)
thanx: my teamates and non teamates who keep reminding me that the competition is the least important element of slam

General Discussion / New Slams Old Poems
« on: June 25, 2004, 05:14:19 PM »
I wrote the truth ten years ago in poem.  Today, it is still the truth.  Why should i not be allowed to slam with that poem.  And if nobody (not even myself) has been able to create a fresher, hotter, better poem, that ten year poem should still will.
