General Discussion / Syd Arnold, Running for EC
« on: February 05, 2012, 06:45:32 PM »
Heyyo. I'm running for E.C.

My Goals:
My first main goal is to create a system that can pair members who have project ideas with members who have the skills and experience to see those ideas realized, with minimal oversight from the E.C. Think, “PSI Craigslist.” One fact I think we habitually overlook is that very few of us are full-time poets. Most of us are students or professionals in areas that are superficially unrelated to PSI. I say “superficially” because I don’t think there are very many skill sets that we couldn’t utilize, if only we knew what they were and what to do with them. I’ll use myself as an example. I’m a triple major: Math, Biology, and Secondary Education. We’re accustomed to the idea that teaching and poetry go hand in hand, but I find that math is actually the most useful when it comes to the PSI-related projects that I’ve worked on. If you’ve paid attention to the forums recently, you’ve seen my mathematical analysis of random draw (I’ve also done a lot of unpublished analysis of various alternatives). I was relatively lucky in this regard, because I happened to stumble on a Facebook discussion pertaining to the Seeding debate. But you can imagine that there are a lot of potential projects and proposals that a) I haven’t seen and more importantly b) somebody else, who might be highly qualified to contribute, hasn’t heard of. I suspect that there are any number of members out there who, like me, wanted to contribute, but simply didn’t have a way to do it. I want to give those people way to contribute. I think the goal of the E.C. should be not only to make a giant to-do list of all these potential undertakings and try to sort through them, but also to create a system where members can help out and contribute their own skills in whatever capacity they are able. Who is more qualified too determine what each of us has to offer than we ourselves? Whether or not you like my math, and whether or not I like whatever talent you happen to have, I think it's critically important that all of us contribute.

My other main goal is to begin the process of systematically recording all of our operating procedures and making that information available to general members. (This dissemination will benefit greatly from the design of a new website, which I believe should also be one of the EC's and PSI's primary projects.) Just so it's clear what I mean when I say this: most of us don’t know that SMs control NPS while the EC runs WoWPS and iWPS (I stumbled upon this information in an unrelated thread and only coincindently happened to retain it); most of us don’t know how the order of bouts is determined in indie events (or what the order is for any given tournament, if my local scene is any indicator); most of us don’t know what decisions are under the jurisdiction of PSI and which are at the discretion of the Host City Committees; most of us don’t know that there isn’t an official procedure for determining storm poets (and almost nobody at all knew until about a month ago). Whether or not any of these specific examples are important to you, I hope you can appreciate the value of knowing that this kind of basic information is available to you so that you CAN view it if you choose to. If we don’t know what our processes are, we have no way to examine them for flaws or potential improvements; if we have that information gathered, organized, and available, then not only will general members have a better understanding of how things work, but they will be able to help us seek improvement.

Obviously, there are a lot of other important things I’d like to do:
  • Establish PSI’s YouTube Channel (a process which I have little to contribute to personally, technological failure that I am, but that I think my first main goal addresses)
  • See the launch of a new website (again, see my first main goal)
  • Create a resource archive for Host City Committees that general members can contribute to
  • Generally, look at our system analytically to determine inefficiencies, inconsistencies, and anything else than can be systematically improved
  • Anything else y’all want on the table

Other (relevant) stuff:
I’ve been involved in slam since middle school as: a member of Minnesota’s BNV team, a two-time member of the all-women’s Punch Out Poetry Slam team, an individual competitor, a volunteer at both NPS and WoWPS, a host, a proxy, a committee member, and various other things without official titles. I participate heavily in forum debates, including conducting mathematical analysis as it relates to discussion. I am currently involved in a project to gather and organize information from past HCCs regarding advertising strategies for national events. I’m also helping organize WoWPS 2013.

As I said, I study math, biology, and education. I’ve taught high school math classes and college classes in both bio and English. I currently work as a Hall Manager at UW-River Falls. I collaborate with 9 other HMs and 90 student staff members across campus to organize campus events. I supervise six full-time and five part-time staff members and eight volunteer staff to organize smaller events for my 250 upper-class residents. I have also independently organized campus rallies and protests.

I’m focused and hard working. I will approach every new task and idea with and open and analytical mind. I think I have a lot to offer and I’d love the opportunity to do so.

Cheers
Syd Arnold

General Discussion / Poetry Craigslist
« on: October 21, 2011, 12:34:27 PM »
There are a lot of awesome ideas flying around right now for how we can improve our organization, our community, and our future in general. There is also a lot of great stuff getting lost in the clutter and miscommunication about who's doing what and what the appropriate process is for initiating projects. And of course, even when the ideas aren't lost, the people with the ideas are not always the ones with the skills or the time to execute them.

My solution:

I want to create a Poetry Craigslist where members with ideas can connect with members who have relevant skills. It could be as simple as:

Idea:
Looking for (...) skills/ Looking for help with...:
Contact (...) for more information.

Or, on the other end:

Skill set:
Interested in working on a project relating to...:
Contact (...) for more information.

I see this as a great way for unofficial committees to form without cluttering the forums and without everyone getting lost in critiques of the concept before any concrete ideas have been fleshed out or work has been done. This can be a way for people to start donating small and discrete but very productive units of time and energy. I really believe that the vast majority of us want to help and simply don't know how and feel overwhelmed at the idea of guessing. So, let's take the guesswork out of it.

I don't have any idea how to put this together (Erik? Help, please?) but I'm going to work on it. If anyone has any useful ideas, shout 'em at me.

What kind of records do we keep about past events?

Is there a report that gets submitted AFTER the events?

Do we have some way of keeping track of things that went well, things that needed work, wheels that were re/invented, etc.?

General Discussion / Poets as Resources
« on: October 19, 2011, 05:41:46 PM »
So, I think one universal problem we have is thinking that a) because we do poetry slams, poetry is the only thing we need to be good at and b) because we're poets and poets are artists, the only thing we know how to do is poetry. I, for one, am way better at math than I will ever be at poetry (or anything else), a skill that I am trying to put to use for the benefit of this community in other places on the forum.

I don't have nearly as much experience as Omni with organizing college slam events, but I have a reasonable amount of experience with other college events and I'd also be willing to share whatever insight I have.

Off the top of my head I can name at least a dozen poets who are better than the average person at a dozen things that are not poetry. And we currently have no way to utilize their skills. Some of these skills are incredibly relevant: we have graphic designers who could be designing promo stuff, we have organizers, we have tech savvy people who could be designing web space, hell even college kids with no ties to anything can do outreach at our respective schools. By this time next year we could have live stream of events, we could have a stats archive, we could have a dozen things.

I'm willing to do the work to make all this happen, but unless I can do it with a TI-89 I don't know how.

Suppose for a second that I was interested in taking on the project of creating a database of members whose consultation might be beneficial and their relevant skill sets with the intention of providing the information to HCC, how would someone recommend I go about doing that?

At Scott's suggestion, I've moved this idea to it's own thread.

As I said, I don't know how to go about doing this. I'm relatively new on the scene. I know relatively few people and I'm also hopeless at technology. That being said, I would really like to do this, so I'm looking for insight on the following things and probably some help executing by someone with more experience than I have.

  • What's a good way to do this? What's a good format and where should I put it that it will be accessible without being cluttered?
  • Who should I try and contact? Who do we already know if who has skills that we should use?
  • What do I do with the list once I have it? How do I make it easy to find and maintain and utilize?

General Discussion / Parly-pro manuel?
« on: September 06, 2011, 10:53:12 PM »
So, I know one thing that frustrates people about SM meetings is that nobody knows parly-pro. This offer is directed mostly at SlamMasters, but I can't access your forum, so I'm putting it here:

Would it be useful to have a really basic, one-page or even half-page outline of parly-pro to use for reference? I'm envisioning a flowchart because I think flowcharts are easy to follow, but it could be anything. Obviously it won't cover everything, but since we seen to know almost nothing at all, any improvement at all will look pretty significant.

If this is something that y'all would like to have, I'd be willing to put it together and make sure that it gets to the meetings.

General Discussion / SM Forum

I'm curious why general members are not able to see the SM forum. I like transparency. Especially as a member of an organization. Especially as a non-profit organization. Is there a specific reason for it?

General Discussion / a couple random NPS questions

Does our coach have to be a PSI member?

How many event passes does each team get? Is that contingent on how many team members we have?
