I'm Inkera Oshun, Event Coordinator for the Individual World Poetry Slam.

This is an official call to host iWPS 2013 in your city!

If there are any interested parties who want to host iWPS 2013, please make your intention known here or via email to myself by Friday, 16 November 2012. My email address is: inkera@slamcharlotte.com

Subject line should be: “ iWPS 2013 Host”

At that point, all interested parties will receive a vetting packet of questions and considerations regarding your potential to host the event. The turn around time for completion of the vetting packet will need to happen fairly quickly, so that the Executive Council can work to secure a host city.

Please understand that this is not a request for “I’ll do it if you need me to” bids. This is a call for cities who WANT to host 2013. Also, you need not have the bid completed to state interest. That’s what the vetting packet you’ll receive is for.

Anyone can bid for iWPS. It need not be a SlamMaster or even a member of PSi.

I would love to work with you to bring iWPS 2013 to your city. I look forward to hearing from you.

NPS 2012 needs YOU to make our "I Am POETRY" campaign a success!!

As part of the planning process for NPS 2012, we are doing a "I Am POETRY" video series to be used in our marketing efforts.

Help us get ready for NPS 2012-Charlotte by telling us what makes YOU poetry! Submit a 30 SECOND personal video to us via email: iampoetrynps@gmail.com. The video MUST contain the words "I Am Poetry". We welcome all forms of creativity. Please keep all submissions clean and free of anything offensive.
Some of the content will be used in commercials and marketing efforts for NPS 2012-Charlotte!

This is FRESH! This is RESET!! This is SlamCharlotte!!!

SlamCharlotte is dedicated to bringing Charlotte and the surrounding areas the best in featured artists.
In an effort to do this, the SlamCharlotte Management team has decided to open up feature slots for the 2012-2013 season only to poets who have NEVER featured at our venue before.

*We will start accepting requests IMMEDIATELY*

This is how it works..........please read the entire note.

Our slam is the 3rd Friday of every month. We don't have features in April, May, or June. Our slam season runs from July to June.

SlamCharlotte passes the hat to pay our features and allows them to sell merchandise. In the past, features have received between $100-$400 but please understand that we have no way of guaranteeing you a certain amount. We can offer lodging at a local hotel the night of your feature.

We can provide you with a listing of other poetry venues in the area BUT we do not book shows for you. If we book shows for you, there is a 20% administrative fee that comes out of the performance rate you receive.

Our feature slots go very quickly and we are thankful for that. So that means when the request for features open up, you should be expedient in your request.

If you are interested in featuring, please send an email/FB message to MY attention. The email should include the month you are interested in featuring. If you are new to performance poetry and there is a slim chance that we might not know you, I urge you to send links to past performances, your written work will not be accepted. Verbal/phone requests to feature or requests sent to other members of the management team will not be accepted.

It will be taken to the SlamCharlotte Management team for consideration. Everyone who sends a request will be notified of our decision.

After all feature slots are filled, we start a short waiting list in the event that a feature has to cancel.
You can’t slam for a spot on SlamCharlotte's team and feature in the same season. We seldom book features who have been a part of a SlamCharlotte team, however we will consider this option if you are part of a group of touring poets.

We hope to see you at SlamCharlotte as a featured artist!

Blumenthal Performing Arts, Poetry Slam, Inc., & SlamCharlotte have partnered to bring you the 23rd National Poetry Slam. This will be the 4th time these organizations have partnered to bring you a national poetry event and we are excited about having you in the Queen City once again.

We are still experiencing technical difficulties with the website. We anticipate that it will be launched by 5 pm on Monday, 2 April 2012. The website address will be www.nps2012charlotte.com

Some important things to remember:

DATES: 7-11 August 2012 (Early registration will be on Monday, 6 August 2012)

The Holiday Inn is offering a rate of $119 + tax per night (for a room with either a King Bed or two Double Beds) starting on Sunday, August 5 and going through Sunday, August 12. By Plane: The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is only 8 miles away from the host hotel. US Airways is our airline of choice, and we are currently working on a special discount code.

*The most economical way to get to the host hotel from the airport, is the Sprinter Bus, which is only $1.75 each way. The Sprinter Bus runs every 20 minutes during weekdays and every 30 minutes during nights and weekends, and conveniently has a stop that is only 2 blocks away from the host hotel! I am currently the Artistic Director, Co-Slammaster, and number one fan for SlamCharlotte, one of the slam teams in Charlotte NC.

I don’t consider myself to be poet but I am a lover of poetry, good people, warm spirits and rain showers. I find solace in volunteering and helping others.

My love affair with PSi started in 2004 at the first iWPS in Greenville SC. Since then, I have volunteered at a PSi event every year.
I served as co-organizer for iWPS 2006, 2008, 2010 and currently for NPS 2012. I served as co-organizer for the Southern Fried Regional Poetry Slam in 2005 and I currently serve as the Assistant-Tournament Director.

I became a member of the EC in 2006 as the iWPS host city coordinator. I served for a year and was re-elected as a trustee at the end of 2007 and have served on the EC since then. I am currently the Treasurer and a member of the PSi Finance Committee.

I have enjoyed my tenure on the EC and feel that I have helped create policies and procedures that further serve to strengthen the organization. I am excited about the work the EC past/present have put in place and would love to help further develop the mission of the organization.

If it is the will of the Slammasters, I would love to continue serving PSi and the poetry community through my service on the Executive Council.

The individual World Poetry Slam, a 4 day poetry slam competition, storms the Queen City 10-13 Dec. Despite the December temperatures, the 72 poets representing 4 countries and 3 continents will bring the heat.

There is ONE slot left and you have the opportunity to compete, receive a cash prize, and have your registration fee paid by Poetry Slam Inc.

It all goes down Dec. 10th at 345 N. College Street at the McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square. There will be a meet and greet from 7-8 PM and the slam starts at 8 PM. The slam is hosted by the one and only, Q.

If you want to compete for the last slot...........here are the rules

*12 poets will be allowed to compete
*list opens at 7:15 PM and closes at 7:45 PM in the lobby in front of the theatre
*12 poets will be determined lottery style-all names in a hat and 12 names drawn, 13th name will calibrate
*$10 registration fee for poets-proceeds given to the winner
*3 rounds-1st and 2nd round cumulative and 3rd round clean slate
*12 poets in the first round
6 poets in the 3rd round
3 poets in the last round
****If there is a tie for first place, it will be broken based on the cumulative score from all 3 rounds****
*Each poem must be of the poet's own construction;
*Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten-second grace period) to read one poem. If the poet goes over time, points will be deducted from the total score.
*The poet may not use props, costumes or musical instruments;
*Of the scores the poet received from the five judges, the high and low scores are dropped and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30.

This event is "complimentary" as a prelude to the main event and is guaranteed to get you in the mood for some poetry.

Individual World Poetry Slam - VOLUNTEER FORM

Thank you for your interest in the 2008 individual World Poetry Slam ,another Poetry Slam Inc. event in partnership with SlamCharlotte. We are looking for volunteers to help staff events from Wednesday December 10th until Saturday December 13th . We are also looking for people to help with a variety of other tasks leading up to the main event.

Door/Tickets: Your job is to man the door, and check poet/volunteer passes & tickets.

Merchandise: This person(S) will sell merchandise belonging to the poets and sell event t-shirts. You will be responsible for keeping an accurate account of the merchandise received/returned to each poet and keeping an accurate count of the money collected and owed to each poet.

Scorekeeper: this person(s) will write down the poets score and tally them up.
Wed.-1 (last chance slam)

Timekeeper: this person(s) will keep track of the poet's time using a stop watch

Registration :Check poets in as they arrive in lovely Charlotte. Assist in giving out poet/volunteer badges

Runner: this person(s) will serve as a gopher. They will assist with a little of everything.

Set-up : Move the mics, test the mics, get the stage ready to go for the event or bout and assist in setting up chairs . (We probably won't need set up crew because of the venues but let's wait and see)

Clean-up: Put away all the equipment after a bout or event is over (there will definitely be some crossover between the set-up & clean-up folks) (We probably won't need clean up because of the venues but let's wait and see)

Greeter: this person will greet the poets as they arrive at the hotel and help with directions to the various events.(These persons will probably man the slam headquarters to field questions also.)

Bout managers/emcee's are taken care of through PSI.

iWPS 2008 registration is open!!

Poetry Slam Inc. (PSi) and SlamCharlotte have partnered together to bring you the individual World Poetry Slam. The event will be held in Charlotte NC from 10-13 Dec. 2008.

iWPS is a 3 day poetry competition featuring 72 poets from across the world. The poets will compete for cash prizes, a chap book deal, and a year of bragging rights.

Register now for your chance to be one of the 72 poets from across the world battling for the oportunity to be the number one poet in the world.

For the first two months of registration 50 slots are reserved for individual representatives of certified PSI venues. Those are available on a first come, first served basis and only the SlamMaster may register the individual representative for his or her slam. The other 17 slots are available to any member of PSI who doesn't have regular access to a local slam, with preference given to those who live the farthest away from the site of the event and those living outside the host nation.

On November 1st, if there are still slots available, they are open to all members of PSI, regardless of location or venue representation on a first come, first served basis.

Additionally, there will be a "last chance" slam held the Wednesday before iWPS as well as an online video slam. The winners of these two competitions each get one slot with registration paid by PSi . The EC will also permit past iWPS champions to register without qualification through local slams until Oct. 31st. After Oct. 31st, if these slots are not taken, they will be open to all members of PSi regardless of location or venue representation on a first come, first served basis.

Get your application in as soon as possible BEFORE November 1 to assure yourself of the best chance to compete.

I hope each of you reading this is getting ready for the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Detroit Mi. This is an event not to miss!!!

I will be arriving at DTW at 12:11 PM on Wednesday, 12 March. The cheapest cab ride from the airport to the hotel is roughly $41.
