General Discussion / Boogers and Turds (and other rules questions)
« on: April 15, 2013, 07:05:51 PM »
Boogers/Turds....Are these props?  I'd say they are...They are not necessarily available to everyone.

Second, at our Slam Off, we had a guy ask the host if he could hook up his beat to the sound system... The host said no, and the guy looked like he was going to play his beat through his headphones on the microphone..  He didn't end up doing it, but as bout manager I was scrambling through this forum to determine what the point penalty would be.  I am assuming it is instant DQ?

General Discussion / Poetry Slam Dying?
« on: May 04, 2012, 07:55:53 PM »
According to some of the downers out there, slam poetry is dying out.

http://www.google.com/trends/?q=%22poetry+slam%22&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

According to this chart, it appears as though searches are on average, at a slight but steady increase.  I'm sure there are a million different explanations for this, but thought it would be something interesting for the community to see.

It would be interesting to look at the search spikes in the cities where NPS was located each year.

Slam Selection Processes / Knoxville Poetry Slam Selection Process 2011
« on: November 03, 2011, 09:40:32 PM »
Knoxville Poetry Slam
The Ink 221 Cumberland Ave.
Knoxville TN 37902
2nd and 4th Fridays of every month

The following is Knoxville Poetry Slam's slam team selection process.

The following points will be awarded throughout the regular season.  At the end of the season the points still be tallied, and our slam teams will be decided by which poets are at the top of the leaderboard.

These points will be rewarded in accordance with the results of the monthly slam.

1st place: 5 points
2nd place: 4 points
3rd place: 3 points
4th place: 2 points
All others: 1 point

Due to the constant need of staff to perform administrative duties, the following points will be rewarded based on which actions are performed.

Keep Score:         1 point
Keep Time:          1 point
Keep Score/Time: 1 point
Take door money: 1 point
Fundraise :            2 points

These points are to be supplemental to performing in the slam.  Supplemental points can only comprise 50% of your earned total.  Administrative positions are open to all, and are given on first come first serve basis.  If there is any dispute, positions will be decided by open competition decided by the slam master.  These points can not be combined with each other in the same night.

There will also be open mic/theme slams on off weeks.  These will each have a theme, and may not be contingent on the poet performing his or her own work. The points rewarded for these will vary.

All regular slams are subject to official PSI rules.

Season schedule will be as follows

Slam Off

1st Place: 15 points
2nd Place: 7 points
3rd Place:  5 points
All others:  1 point

The top twelve poets at the end of the regular season will compete in the Slam Off
If a piece wins in the finals of a slam it can not be used again until
the end of the season.

The person with the most overall points at the end of the season will be considered the Team Captain of The Knoxville Honey Badgers.

The person that wins the End of Season Slam Off, will be the IWPS Representative.

The highest scoring female of the season will be the WOWPS Representative.

At the end of the slam off, the highest scoring 5 poets will make up the Knoxville Honey Badgers. The fifth poet will be considered an alternate.

Any remaining poets can comprise additional teams in order of rank.  They will be permitted to travel and compete, but will be required to organize, practice, travel, and fundraise entirely on their own.  These teams are not permitted to register for PSI events as venue representatives.

All members of the Knoxville Honey Badgers will be required to practice 1-3 times weekly, or at the Slam Master's discretion.  For every missed practice or fundraising event, the poet will be docked 5 points from their season total.  Once the poet reaches zero points, he or she will be reviewed for dismissal from the team.

All members of the team will be required to help raise funds for the team's traveling efforts, and may be required to pay for some of their travels themselves.

Upon earning a spot on the Knoxville Poetry Slam team, all members will be asked to sign a contract which informs applicants of the terms and conditions of being a member of the Knoxville Poetry Slam team.

General Discussion / Question about NPS DVD's
« on: August 18, 2011, 06:59:57 PM »
When do the NPS DVDs usually become available?

Also, I have seen NPS DVD's for NPS 2000, 2002, and I own 2003..

But, does anyone know the whereabouts of an NPS 2001 DVD?  I've heard many good things about this one and I was wondering if exists in DVD or VHS form, or if it is only a memory.

Thank you.

General Discussion / NPS 2011
« on: August 14, 2011, 05:29:08 PM »
I would first like to congratulate everyone on a great experience at NPS 2011.  As a first timer I enjoyed all of the festivities that took place last week, and can't wait until next year.

With that said, I would like everyone to use this thread to post either their favorite things about NPS 2011, or things they didn't like.

Personally, I loved the Box of Doom slam, I thought it was a great palette cleanser that let us hear something other than rape poems, and let us hear funny performances from the nation's best poets.

On the other hand,  there was a definite issue, from what I could see, with how All Access Pass holders were treated.  Most of the ones I talked to felt us though they were ripped off.  At some events single event ticket holders were given first entry over those with passes.  At day events the passes were not checked.

I talked to a few people who, by the end of the event, had stopped trying to attend events because they were being shouted at in lines for the events, and had to stand in the very back of the room for events because people who paid $5 for a single event got in before they did.

I hope these issues are addressed before NPS 2012, however judging by the reactions of the people I talked to, they may not be back, and they will certainly not be buying a Festival Pass.

Just some words from the street that I thought I would share, feel free to share yours.
