After a very tough start this year with several venue changes 9 (some at the last second) the Killeen Poetry Slam has found a new home that both feels and looks right. Wannabe's Cafe 220 E. Avenue D. Killeen TX 76541. they have a Great Stage.. Sound and Lighting and more importantly they WANT US There.... so our NEW Location is Wannabe's..the place we wanna be.

General Discussion / Clean poetry needed
« on: January 03, 2011, 11:43:02 AM »
Ive got a unique opportunity to broadcast poetry to the military community. But is has to be relatively clean (No Cussing) but you can use all the metaphor you want. The poems should be 1 min -3 min in length. If you want some global air time  E-mail them to Ninjacrow1@excite.com.

Mike, I agree.

Myself, I always have two problems with these discussions:

1) That Slam is analagous to sports.
Just because we use a point system doesn't make it a sport.  You don't earn points in slam.  You are awarded points.  Big difference.  Actual sports have removed the objectivity of what a point is comprised of: put the ball in the basket, no argument, a point.  Carry the ball across this line on the ground, no discussion, point.  Sports are concrete in this regard, while almost nothing in Slam is concrete.  Slam borrows from sports.  It is NOT a sport.  It is a talent show.

The sport that comes to mind to compare slam to is figure skating or cheerleading...Judges award points

seeking peace in all things

In this thread as in others I find a single argument. Is NPS a competetion or a festival?....Poets/Teams work hard and spend lots of money ..$1000s to come to the NPS every year.

So the points do matter by extentison then the judges matter.

I know Slam was founded on the audience. I also beleive there will be a hard time convinceing me that there is a expert judge of slam out there.

There has to be away to get a diverse pannel of judges that keeps the spirit of slam but also focuses in on the poets and the words....I still dont know the answer to this question but eventually I think the competetion ... will out-way... the random from the crowd method...but until that day comes choosing from the crowd is the best we have.

heres what I did and the poets were happy

I wanted to find judges  for one of my final slams that hadn’t heard any of my regular poets yet. In my venue we have a strong following of regular audience members who have their favorite poet, or have heard most of the poets who will be in the final.
I sought out high school teachers, college drama  teachers,  city council members, radio DJs anyone who I thought would enjoy the show but hadn’t been there before.
What I got was a 2 people that showed up…1 thought everything should rhyme the other thought it was Rape event…..Both got their minds changed after the first round and said they didn’t know how to judge the poems. I still had 3 audience members 2 were regulars one was just some poor lady who brought a ticket….
We had one of the best judges slams and evenly scored to date

I can see trying to get pre stationed judges that will help the slams start on time.....i just think it will be hard to fill slots for every venue.. it tool me 3 months to get 2 judges to show up

General Discussion / Re: no repeat rule
« on: August 19, 2009, 04:55:27 PM »
Can we agree that although we want to promote poetry and encourage and empower others to write and participate. But THE NPS is a Competition. wrapped in a festival. The final stage should be about showing your very best work. It may be the only time a first time visitor sees or hears what we do.

if we can agree that possibly some of the best work COULD be used in prelim bouts that have limited visibility, is it not our duty to show the world why we think that these 4 teams are OUR very best....and shouldn't our very best be able to show what they feel is their very best work.

Buy removing the no-repeat rule we are not saying you have to re-peat a poem but you have a option.

Again I thought allowing only 2 possible repeats in finals was a good middle ground. That way you MUST have 2 new poems and MAY repeat 2 poems used in prelims

But Nothing says that you Have to re-peat anything...and I am sure some of you wont  on a principle issue. But Finals should be about A teams best work against other teams best work.

i see the debate on know repeating has well defined sides......I would like to hear from the SM who made the motion for the amendment to allow unlimited repeats in the finals.....

Regardless of which side your on or for what reason I think that allowing two repeats on final stage is a good medium...But lets see how things fair in 2010 we may self medicate on this one.

I was the SM who brought up the idea of repealing the no repeat rule: Now this was not to advance the art or to make poets write more...Put simpley Some of the best poems get lost in prelims...The Finals is were we should show off our very best work to an audience of NON POETS. This is what drive ticket sales....

While I personally like the no repeat rule because it makes it more of a chess match..Repeating 2 poems on final stage I thought was a fair comprimise...The body of slam masters voted in a no limit on final stage repeat amendment...I forget who proposed this....But I was willing to live with it for the sake of the Show.

Yes we as competeing Poets want wore writting and more creativity...But the dirty secret is we need audiences who will spread our passion world wide. If ESPN can show a Rock, paper, scissor competetion or a spelling bee... for no other reason other than they got a audience. Wouldnt it be nice to have our NPS live on TV.... To do that you got to both draw and please the crowd...The lifting of the no-repeat rule for finals is for that purpose.
