General Discussion / Re: Inkera Oshun running for re-election on the EC

No, Scott, the problem is that PSI doesn't genuinely have many great successes to speak of, and that's why so many people are running for EC this year.

I'm not sure where this impression is coming from or what it's based on, but the last two WOWps have been profitable, with a marked increase from 2010 to 2011. Audience numbers were also increased.

This information is just flat-out wrong.

This is coming from the person who said this past iWPS was "successful," though I'm pretty sure you weren't even there, and I notice you don't mention how successful it is in response. Unlike you, I've actually been to all of these events.

If your definition of success is "made any profit at all" or "increased our audience from dismal to bad," then good for you. But given the huge popularity of spoken word when promoted well, you are probably failing hard when you have to search for judges for a single bout, not to mention multiple ones.

Sam,

In the past two years, PSI has thrown four poorly attended events (two iWPS and WoWPS). Your priorities don't really touch on what seems to be the largest shortcoming in PSI's current strategy: filling the seats. Do you think that the EC's priorities should be internal restructuring? At the last iWPS, there were zero flyers up promoting the events. Surely promotion, the first verb in the PSI mission statement, has to appear somewhere in your list of plans?

Can you provide more concrete suggestions than: "make sure EC members are well-trained," make sure that "we are all on the same page," and "increase member participation?" I understand that you want to be part of the collective vision of PSI, but is that vision an extension of your own, are are you more happy to piggyback onto others?

Hi Inkera,

Glad to see you running!

A few questions:

During your term as a member of the EC, four of the last six major tournaments had very poor attendance, including the last two iWPS and WoWPS events, and in the cultural consciousness, poetry slam has made no significant growth. Can you explain to the community why you feel you deserve re-election as a major part of the community leadership, given these perceived shortcomings? What policy changes within PSI are you responsible for and proud of? Your dedication and ethic is, of course, unparalleled, and a valuable asset to everyone.

Syd, what committees do you envision being absolutely essential? Which of your goals do you think should be tackled by committee, and which should be handled strictly by the EC?

What are your plans to promote collaboration amongst your fellow EC members in order to help these goals get accomplished?

-Jesse

Hey Jesse,

As you have certainly observed through social media channels, I've been intensely debating and collaborating with many of the currently announced EC candidates (and some who are about to throw their hat into the ring) about major improvements for months now, and in that time we've developed strong professional relationships (and close friendships outside of slam), and have intense levels of mutual respect for each other as organizers, artists, and importantly, humans. As you can see from other EC bids and posts from members of the current EC, the internet-first platform that I've been pushing for months has been widely accepted as one of PSI's greatest priorities, if not the THE greatest, and I'm confident that united vision will go a long way in fostering a spirit of cooperation.

Sam:

Can you please expand on what changes you envision the organization undergoing in the near future? Can you please list them in order of priority?

As a member of the current EC, with access to more information about PSI's inner-working than other candidates, I'm sure you have plenty of original ideas on how the governing body should proceed.

You mention that "you try not to take [slamming] too seriously." So why do you want to be part of the national leadership?

General Discussion / Re: Zeroing Votes Out

I would like to point out that "the most fair way" punishes Kait Rokowski the most, who not only accumulated the most votes and youtube hits, but also spent a considerable amount of social networking currency driving traffic to the site. While I understand there really isn't a much fairer way to do this, a legitimate contender who put in tons of promotion time was way ahead of the pack and now is being punished because someone else tried to cheat to catch up. Seems like the reset is a best-case scenario for the cheater in the this case, no?

Are people suspected of cheating going to be allowed into the next round of voting? Or is the evidence too thin to pin-down conclusively?

General Discussion / Re: Do You Really Want Alvin Lau on the EC?

This was a facebook status update, taken without context of what I was reacting to, posted behind a filter, with no request for clarification from the poster, that has been since made private.

So is the argument here that I'm unfit to lead because I'm disconnected with the poetry slam community as a whole, or because I make private remarks behind (admittedly not air-tight) closed digital doors, or is this just a fly-by smear because someone felt slighted by a vague, sardonic comment I typed from a McDonald's parking lot while joking with a friend? Honestly, I'm suspecting that it's the last reason.

I wrote a status update in my pretty usual, sardonic fashion, with a friends-filter applied. And I feel that, considering the PSI President is allowed to endlessly vent about his feelings on facebook with fear of reprisal, that I should be afforded the same luxury. I never said "Chicago only has white people features ever," as Tim seems to attempt to rebutt above.

From coming into the scene to now, Mental Graffiti, which was originally created as a safe space alternative to the Green Mill, has been organized by: Dan Sullivan, Tim Stafford, Emily Rose, Amy David, Tim Cook, JW Basilio, and Billy Tuggle. That's a 14% person of color rate among MG organizers in eight years, with an equally rare amount of non-white hosts, and I'm pretty sure the one person of color didn't have a 1/7th influence on the direction of MG over the years. After the most recent transition in leadership, I made dozens of calls (to white organizers, including Tim) PLEADING for more people of color as hosts and organizers. If I have any of these facts wrong, please correct me.

At the Green Mill, which I went to religiously for years, I haven't seen a single non-white host since 2002. Members of the Speak'easy ensemble--which Tim is a part of--occasionally host, but they are made up of all straight white men except for Molly, who I've never seen host but may. This is additional to directly racially charged comments made by Marc Smith to be, regarding Asians and martial arts. Not going to get into it.

Okay: I've never been to Words that Kill. But that's not a venue with a home.

General Discussion / Alvin Lau, Running for EC
« on: January 02, 2012, 08:15:23 PM »
In 2002 I saw Dennis Kim open for The Last Poets in a YMCA on the southside of Chicago. So moved by his performance, I decided poetry was going to be my life's work, dropped out of art school, and immersed myself in spoken word, studying with local luminaries and performing as often as possible. After winning two national youth titles at Brave New Voices, I fell in love with the competitive world of slam and advanced to the adult circuit, where I have since set the record for most individual finals appearances of any poet. Over my career, I've performed at hundreds of universities, organized workshops at schools and festivals, published widely in anthologies and journals considered by Best American, performed on two seasons of HBO's Def Poetry Jam, earned an interdisciplinary MFA in Poetry and Performance, and I volunteer at The Moth Storyslam, Chicago's largest spoken word show. I've developed one of the most comprehensive understandings of where spoken word floats in our cultural and academic zeitgeist, and have a specific long-term strategy on how to raise our community's cultural significance, which in turn will increase the number of writers and audience members at slams.

Outside of poetry, I am a prominent game theorist, with regional, national, and world titles across various games: I'm a nationally ranked chess player, a high-stakes poker player who performs in the top .1% in a highly competitive field, and my side business as a gaming consultant and private instructor has generated nearly $1M in revenue in four years. High-stakes gaming has taught me many important skills which translate to success as a member of the EC: meticulous attention to detail; painful self-analysis needed to identify leaks; intense focus over prolonged periods; incredible record-keeping; scouring rules systems for exploitative strategies; effective bankroll management and ironclad fiscal responsibility. Additionally, my writing on slam strategy is the most comprehensive and most discussed analysis written on the subject.

I'm running for EC because I want to see the poetry slam movement thrive in the public spotlight. The concept of Poetry, even idiomatically, is equated with momentous beauty and observational thoughtfulness, yet slam poets have a cultural importance somewhere between stand-up comedians and hypnotists. Why is this? The greats of our community are  (MacArthur grant winning) geniuses, capable of cathartic, life-changing performances. So why aren't poets doing hour-long specials on Showtime, or performing on the tonight show? Why do we resort to event volunteers and narcoleptics as judges for a tournament like iWPS, which attracts the premiere spoken word talent in the world?

Audiences crave slam. Well-promoted events, from local invitationals to the massive National Poetry Slam, attract huge, sold-out crowds--I am constantly surprised at the exuberant turnout for shows in the farthest nooks of America--yet PSI still throws poorly attended tournaments with regularity. Why is this? What is PSI doing to raise cultural awareness of slam year to year?

As a member of the Poetry Slam EC, my major priority will be a complete renovation of PSI's internet presence, incorporating a hip, re-designed website, high-quality media library of our community's top poets, and most importantly, mandatory streaming video of all PSI semi-finals and finals. The number one mandate in PSI's mission statement is to promote spoken word, and there is no better way to jumpstart that campaign than by creating a massive, free-to-the-public internet presence. Let's learn lessons from more successful spoken word non-profits and tournament sub-cultures and  apply them to slam--hint: event streaming, clear presentation, great store products, and nearly unlimited free video go a long way in making something wildly popular.

I'd also like to: consider public radio partnerships, cross-promote with Indiefeed's performance poetry channel, address the dominance of draw order on indie finals stage, consult with organizers to write a host city guidebook, develop better incentives for host cities to throw successful events, increase the full-time staff to allow for superior fund-raising and project support, change the EC voting process to better accomodate host city needs, and develop better educational material for high schools. However, all of these plans take backseat to internet renovation and expansion, which will serve as a promotional springboard for all other projects.

Thank you for your consideration, I will happily field all questions!

-Alvin Lau
