General Discussion / Re: NPS 2012 competing teams
« on: June 01, 2012, 09:19:34 PM »
Add my name to the list of appreciative folks! You rule, Abbey!

FYI to all - In case y'all haven't seen it yet, I have created a spreadsheet of who's on which team again this year.  It should be available to anyone with this link:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtfjpBlV9ukgdFBrekZ2S2tMTmRCajl0QUZTVDZfN0E#gid=0

Let me know if anyone has questions or concerns.

Slight change to Team Pittsburgh; Alan Olifson in unable to commit to Charlotte, so Valkyrie will be stepping up as our 4th member. Rhetorical Artz is currently slated to move in as team alternate.

General Discussion / Re: Streaming Slams
« on: May 08, 2012, 01:27:39 AM »
Pittsburgh JUST broke into the streaming world, mainly because I got a really good deal on a HD webcam at Staples and figured I could find all manner of other uses for it. So far, we've only used it once for streaming our finals, so we're learning as we go.

-How often do you live stream at your slam?
Streamed finals as our debut, plan to stream monthly

-If you do, to what purpose? Publicity? Fundraising? Document-archive?

Publicity mostly; to give our poets some exposure, as well as give our slam itself more exposure. Two years ago, the most frequent reaction at Nationals was "Wait....Pittsburgh has poets?" I'd like to change that, both for the slam's sake AND for the sake of our poets.

-If you charge to view, what do you charge?

Free, probably going to incorporate some form of donation system soon.

-What system do you use? Ustream or some other?

UStream

-What camera or equipment do you use? (I-phone, the mic and camera on a laptop, etc)

Microsoft LifeCam 1080p HD webcam mounted on a tripod

-Does your equipment come from your slam's budget or is the use of it donated?

Technically donated...I bought it myself, mainly for our slam use, but also for my own

-How much money do you budget to do this or is it donated?

Again, technically it's donated.

-Are your quality expectations low or high (HD, someone's laptop, doesn't matter, it's the content that counts)?

It's supposed to be a fancy-pants techno-gadget camera, with the HD and the 1080p and whatnot, so my expectations are sort of high; on the other hand, it's also going to be streaming and then later posted to YouTube, both of which are free services, so...you get what you pay for.

-What challenges, problems, solutions did you find in doing this; your trials, errors, and fixes?
So far, the main error has been audio quality, and that was my fault. I didn't adjust the mic volume for the room, and some of our louder poets (myself included) suffered from blown-out and fuzzy sounding audio. Haven't streamed a second event yet, so I'll have to get back to you on what fixes worked. It's also all trial and error as far as camera placement goes - using a tripod gives me a BIT more flexibility, but I'm still at the mercy of the USB cord length.

Our debut stream had all of 9 viewers. I also didn't have a link to promote until 2 hours before the slam. Now that we have the Ustream account set up, it'll be interesting to see if the viewership grows, or if nobody really seems to care.

This might be the most baffling piece of spam I've seen in all my time on the internet.

Steel City Slam is now going "Slammaster by committee," and I've been nominated to act as our forum liaison. Requesting access to this forum so I can keep Adriana Ramirez and Brian Francis updated on what goes on here on the forum. Thanks!

General Discussion / Re: NPS 2010 Beard Growing Contest

Yo, Jesster -

I am 1000% in favor of beards, and I respect all my fellow bearded poets,
but yer outta yer MIND if you think I'm shaving any time soon!

Can I just be the sacrificial goat of beard-dom for NPS?

Steel City Slam - slightly updated selection process

Slam season is Sept. - March. The 12 highest cumulative scores from seasonal slams will compete in a Grand Slam in April, to determine team. Top 4 finishers in Grand Slam make Team Pittsburgh, plus one alternate.

I've apparently been elected to act as the forum rep for Team Pittsburgh. Our Grand Slam for NPS2010 is April 20th. I'll post the results here afterwards.

General Discussion / Re: Fuck Cancer t-shirts
« on: March 17, 2010, 11:15:22 AM »
Bad-ass idea, Evan...but just FYI, there is a group called "Shirts For A Cure" that partners with a number of different bands to benefit the Syrentha J. Savio Endowment; they had been selling a "Fuck Cancer" shirt already.

I can't imagine that the phrase "Fuck Cancer" is actually trademarked or copywritten IP, and I'd hate to think that a charitable cause would raise an issue over such a thing anyway, but if this is something that you would want to offer outside of the immediate "slam family" it's perhaps better to be aware of this group beforehand?

Man, I risk sounding maudlin here, but I really do have a lot to be thankful for. I took my big plunge into the slam community not quite a year ago (April will be my anniversary!) and every where I've gone, this place has been an open-armed welcome. You guys really do act as a family, even when the political drama BS goes down, and I'm geekily stoked and honored to be a part of it.

I'm not at all opposed to our art being exposed to more and more people; seems as though that's kind of the point anyway. I am a little curious though, will the average TV viewer see this and make the connection to the wide open world of spoken word, or just assume that the guy in the video is some hip hop artist doing his thing acapella?

I sometimes get the feeling that for a lot of the general populace, slam poets and spoken word artists kind of either stand in the shadow of, or get lumped in with hip-hop by default anyway. It's that, or when you say "spoken word" people start thinking "comedian." I certainly don't feel disrespected by these commercials, but I would definitely be interested to see if this campaign continues, will they dip into any of the other colors that we in the realm of 'spoken word' have on our palette?

I've never tried this, but I did bust out an improv poetry reading with a friend at Union Station in Chicago while waiting for our train to arrive.  That was a great deal of fun.

Guys, look at the bright side: at least you're not Pirates fans.

We'll be lucky to see . 500 next decade.
