General Discussion / People who are flying into IWPS, READ THIS
« on: September 11, 2012, 11:45:26 AM »
We're putting together a system of volunteers driving up to the airport to shuttle you all in. In order to do this, we need you all to send us your flight itineraries and a good way to contact you, either as a message to our facebook page (facebook.com/iwps2012) or to our e-mail address, IWPS2012@gmail.com.

We ask that poets please chip in a little gas money (suggested $10 each) for our volunteers.

This is great information, and posted well in advance -- thank you.

I need to know one final detail -- who shall I contact about chartering a poet / providing flight arrival time at XNA?

I've got a poet who will need transportation to/from the hotel/airport and yes, we're happy to offer gas money -- just curious who we contact/how we forward that information. I don't want her stuck at the airport without a contact person.

Thanks muchly.
-Jeanann

The contact is me, Houston Hughes. my number is 901-483-0884. Please shoot your reps flight info, as well as a good way to contact them day of, to either iwps2012@gmail.com, or as a message to our facebook page at facebook.com/iwps2012

Following in the grand tradition of NUPIC, and with the blessing of Harlym 125, we present to you the first ever TEAM UNDERGROUND POETRY CHAMPIONSHIP. hosted by Ed Mabrey! The night of Friday October 6th from 2am to 4am, just after the last "official" IWPS event, teams will compete (with team pieces only!) and be judged solely by their fellow poets applause. Money and pride are on the line, so you definitely don't want to miss this. For full rules, check out the facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/events/277833318983321/

Fayetteville, Arkansas is proud to be the host of the 2012 Individual World Poetry Slam! For those who’ve never heard of us, we are a mountain town located in the northwest corner of Arkansas, east of Tulsa and south of Kansas City. We're a very liberal town, and the University of Arkansas accounts for about a third of the population of the city. People call us "the Austin of Arkansas"; it's a pretty apt description.

Go ahead and check out our website, iwps.poetryslam.com. Our facebook site is also up at http://www.facebook.com/IWPS2012; we’ll be using that site to do polls on what kind of events folks want and keeping the most up to date information.

DATES:
October 3-6

HOST HOTEL
Our host hotel is the newly renovated Chancellor, the only hotel located in Fayetteville’s Town Square. Room rates are $109 for either a Superior King Room or Superior Queen Room. Reservations may be made by calling The Chancellor Hotel directly at 855-285-6162. To guarantee a room reservation within the PSI block, reservations must be made by September 6, 2012. Some rooms may be available at the hotel between September 6th and September 20, 2012, but don't wait that long if you want to be at the host hotel.

GETTING HERE
Because Fayetteville is centrally located in the continental US, most American cities are a one-day drive away or less. Denver, Albuquerque, Corpus Christie, Atlanta, Knoxville, Dayton, Chicago, and St. Paul are all 12 hours or less away, and gas prices here are always near the lowest in the country, making a drive easy (and cheaper than flying from many places). If you are from outside the US, or far enough away that you’d like to fly, the closest airport is the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport (XNA). It’s approximately 40 minutes away from the host hotel, and is served by many major airlines, as well as smaller (and cheaper) airlines such as Allegiant Air. We will have cars running to and from the airport on demand on Wednesday and Thursday; we only ask that you help our drivers out with gas cost, and let us know about when you're getting in so we can grab poets in groups.

If you can't find decent prices to XNA, you may want to look at flying into Tulsa, Springfield (Missouri), or Little Rock, and either carpooling with locals or renting a car. Greyhound is also an option; the Fayetteville Greyhound Station is a short drive from the host hotel.

VENUES
The Last Chance Slam and finals will both take place on the University of Arkansas Campus, approximately one mile from the host hotel. Prelims and day events will take place on Dickson Street, the Fayetteville town square, and in the Fayetteville Public Library; all within 7 block of the host hotel.

EVENTS
We have a number of excellent events planned, and though they are not all set in stone, there are a few we are extremely excited about that we would like to share. Rob Sturma will be bringing Extreme Championship Poetry, an extraordinary mixture of professional wrestling and slam poetry. We will have a jam slam, where poets can perform in front of a live band made up of some of the best improvisational musicians. And we are looking at getting a burlesque group to be a part of our erotic slam. There will also be one more extremely special team-centered event, which will get its own post later.

VOLUNTEERS
As with any event, we can use all the volunteer help that folks are willing to give. Our volunteer coordinator is Doug Shields, and we have volunteer forms available on our website. Volunteer event passes and finals passes will be given based on the number of hours or specific jobs volunteered for.

OTHER AWESOME THINGS
We will be partnering with moleskine for the event to bring customized notebooks for all of the competing poets, as well as some extra notebooks for a few of the writing workshops. In return, moleskine has asked that we get some pictures and video of folks using their custom notebooks, and they will be interviewing some of the poets that reach finals stage.

PRICES
Day and late night events*: $5  (*half of the day events will be free)
One bout: $7, $5 with student ID
Two bouts (same venue, same night): $10, $7 with student ID

You should put up a facebook event for this now and start inviting folks, especially since I'm not sure how many folks will actually check these boards between now and Tuesday.

General Discussion / Re: Boycott Nationals??
« on: May 09, 2012, 04:10:01 PM »
PS, my previous statement wasn't meant as a reason to not go to NPS, but rather an assurance that there is no reason to avoid IWPS. I still stand by the idea of going to North Carolina and being the loud and opinionated people that we are.

A side note: IWPS this year will have an underground team competition, and will be held in one of the two southern states where gay adoption is legal. Just saying  ;)

Instead of avoiding the state, why don't we try to make a huge impact in it? It's always good when we go into a community and have some kind of service project; is there some way we could organize some kind of poet protest? With the right PR on our side, a few hundred poets doing that could be huge deal, especially if we coordinate with a few local groups.

General Discussion / An IWPS 2012 Update
« on: March 22, 2012, 03:45:48 PM »
Greetings, everyone! There has been some talk of folks being uneasy about the lack of an IWPS 2012 update from the host city at WOWPS. Many of the important final details for this years IWPS won’t be falling into place until April. However, we have had a significant amount of people express a desire for an update, and we are happy to oblige. Here’s where we stand now.

1.   We are currently putting the final touches on a funding proposal for the city of Fayetteville Advertising and Promotion Commission, whose sole purpose is to fund events which bring in outside visitors to the city. The proposal covers print ads, television, billboards, and various other advertisements, as well as the cost of our finals venue. We enter this proposal at the end of this month, and we will find out how much of it we receive in May.
2.   Our proposed finals venue is The Fayetteville Town Center, a large convention hall directly across from what we hope will be the host hotel. This venue is controlled by the previously mentioned Advertising and Promotions Commission, which means we may be able to get the venue for free. Because the venue is, in essence, a large empty room with a sound system, we will be setting aside a certain amount of money for the purpose of building or renting a stage to meet our exact specifications. We are also in the process of securing a back-up venue, the Verizon Ballroom at the University of Arkansas.
3.   We have had a meeting with the mayor of Fayetteville, Lioneld Jordan. He is aware of our event, and has pledged his full support to it.
4.   We have narrowed the possible dates down to two: The first or third weekend of October. We would very much like to have the first week, as there are a number of events taking place that week that we have already planned cross-promotions with. This includes the Seedling Film Festival, an independent film festival, and First Thursday Fayetteville, and art walk which happens just outside of our finals venue and host hotel. This is also the week following Bikes, Blues and Barbecue, the Fayetteville motorcycle rally which is second in size only to Sturgis; this would be a huge source of visibility for our ads.
5.   We are in contact with our ideal host hotel, which is located in the town square. It’s only a few blocks from all of our competitions venues and our day and night event locations, and directly across the street from our ideal finals venue.
6.   Our facebook page, facebook.com/IWPS2012 , went up the day after WOWPS. In the coming months we will be using that page to interact with poets and have public questions on certain things, such which open mics folks would like to see. Our full website is also functional, and will be unveiled shortly after we finalize our dates.

We look forward to seeing you all in Fayetteville in October. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to direct them to IWPS2012@gmail.com , to the facebook page, or to us directly.

If you're interested in mid-america gigs, hit me up. I'd be glad to set you up with something here in north Arkansas, and to pass along contact info for nearby slams (st louis, Springfield MO, Oklahoma City).

Is this a bible-positive anthology, or will any take on the characters be accepted?

General Discussion / IWPS Question
« on: September 14, 2011, 11:48:23 PM »
I initially registered as a storm poet, but tonight won the Rocktown (Little Rock) IWPS qualifier. How do I change my registration from being storm to representing that venue? Thanks!
