can we change IWPS to Individual North American Poetry Slam championship?

Soooo scott,

Is rudy the number one poet in the world? or in America.

In the world.

If the Olympics take place and only athletes from China show up, it means the athletes are the best in the world, but also in China by default.  It doesn't mean "change the Olympics to a Chinese-only event".  It means get some other teams there to live up to the charter of the Olympics. 

And no, the reverse isn't true.  You can't have a world champion at a national event; you can only have a national champion.  That the champion is not from that nation just means the nation just got served.  It's all about how the competition defines itself, not who shows up.  So long as it's genuinely open to all it's completely fair to say the world champ is a world champ regardless of the make-up of their competition that showed up.  I think if it's like that EVERY year, a case could and should be made to change the scope of the contest.  But if I go to England and beat all of their talent, I'm the best poet in England that year, not the best poet in the world.  Fuck England.

The best question is, Is Mortal Kombat a contest of the best fighters in the world?  Or the best fighters in THIS world?  Is the winner the champion of a multiverse?

No....Rudy is the Individual World Poetry Slam Champion.  You can't be the champion of one contest and call it something else.
If you win the Individual World Poetry Slam, you don't get called the World PacMan Champion.  What you win is what you are.

What's the consensus on international venues that cater mostly to expatriots? I host a small monthly open mic over in South Korea, and while we get the occasional Korean entry, it's mostly just other foreign teachers. 

We're not intentionally exclusive, mind you, it's more that the natives don't come in.  I put posters up at local universities and everything!

I've never really considered it anymore than the IWPS champion.  It is a very prestigious title obviously, but I always just saw iWPS as the the exact same indy competition that used to be at NPS, just a new name.  I think it becomes a problem if the winner begins marketing his / herself as the best poet in the world. . . but let's be honest, there are poets that already market their poetry that way that have never won anything.
