Haiku inquiry

It's been brought up during our slams that some want to do haikus as tie breakers. I've looked through the Rulebook and did not find anything abut haikus being used to break ties. I've heard about them at other slams and such. I dont know how to implament this. Can someone give me 411 on this process?  :?

Hi Raul,

Local slams don't have to follow NPS rules to the letter.

So if one wanted to implement a haiku deathmatch as a tiebreaker, they can.

You can use any legitimate method to break a tie in your venue.

But essentially, each person in the tiebreaker slams with a haiku.  The judges pick either poet 1 or poet 2, majority rule wins.

Hey do you know how haiku slams/battles run? Is it pretty much a normal slam except with haikus? or is there a twist to it? I've only seen clips of them on video... i want to try one at our slam.

Hey, Raul:

The only major difference between regular poetry slam and the Head to Head Haiku format is that, just like your tiebreaker, all rounds pit two poets against one another directly and judges don't score, but just vote for which poet they prefer.

There are other very specific ritual rules to the Head to Head Haiku slam as developed by Daniel Ferry. I don't know them all, but you can email Dan about it, or you could also email his protoge, Sam R I.

I think it depends on the type of haiku slam you're running.

If you're running a haiku head-to-head (© Dan Ferry) competition, then you'd definitely use the format that Simone and I mention where you pit one poet against each other. Winner advances to the next round, etc. until only one remains.

But with the Head to Head format from NPS, two poets are pitted against each other.  For each set of poets, there are three rounds. Best 2 of 3 moves to the next round.  It's tourney style, so there're the first wave, then those winners go head to head, then the winners of the next set go against each other until only two remain.

When you get to the final two, there's a battle royale where you can go as many rounds as you wish (I think they have to be odd numbered rounds or something - can't remember that part) and the one with the most wins in that final round win the whole deal.

There have been head to head haiku matches going on for the last one thousand years, at least. So let's put ourselves in a little historical perspective on this idea.
